MTA sues homeless man for $44K after bust
for smashing 11 Brooklyn subway OMNY readers

The MTA is headed to the civil courts in its fight against homeless New Yorkers who cause trouble on the subway. The transit agency on Thursday filed suit in Brooklyn Supreme Court against Brian Baska, a homeless man who was arrested last year after he allegedly smashed up 11 subway fare readers over three weeks. Metropolitan Transportation Authority lawyers seek $44,179 from Baska for damaging the readers, which are used for the agency’s new tap-and-pay OMNY system.(Snip)The MTA has targeted other people who have damaged OMNY readers, including Calvin Williams, who was arrested for busting 18 OMNY screens in November and December 2020.

Comments:

Instead of admitting that the cost of free-range homeless people far outweighs the benefits and doing something about it, NYC finds a way to spend even more money on the problem, in this case racking up attorney fees and courtroom costs in order to levy fines that will never be paid.

Sue a homeless whacko for $44K? Yeah, what great idea! Why hasn't some NYC public servant genius thought of doing this before now?

Keeping professional troublemakers in prison or banishing them to a very remote area is out of the question, as they are the very heart and soul of modern America, helping bust the budgets while promoting the sense that everything is out of control in society. FTA: "It’s not the first time Baska has caused problems on the subway. He was arrested near the Clinton-Washington station on the G line in June 2019 after he got into an altercation with a retired NYPD detective on the train. Baska was holding a baseball bat and arguing with the retired cop, who pulled out his gun." "Shortly after, police busted him on the street on charges of menacing and criminal weapon possession. He was released without bail."

Despite an order from the Washington state governor lifting mask requirements, Seattle school kids may still have to wear face coverings until spring because the teachers union says they 'bring normalcy' to the classroom. 'Future decisions on mask use within the district will be made in partnership with public health, and its implementation will be established after consultation and mutually agreed upon guidelines that are reached through bargaining with our labor partners,' according to a statement from the Seattle Public Schools.(Snip)The teachers union, the Seattle Education Association, however, stomped the brakes on that plan, arguing that kids have gotten used to masks and would feel odd without them.

Within MAGA circles, talk is turning increasingly to impeaching Joe Biden after the midterm elections—assuming, of course, the Republicans retake the House of Representatives (which appears likely). Unfortunately, actual removal would require 60 votes in the Senate. Even under the most favorable scenario, it’s unlikely the GOP will pick up more than four Senate seats.  Nonetheless, with the strong likelihood the Republicans will take control of the House, impeaching Biden looks viable. Why? Well, for the same reason a Democrat-controlled House impeached Donald Trump—twice.  The Democrats used the impeachment process to persuade millions of middle-of-the-road and independent voters that Trump had done something terribly wrong. Of course, the Democrats’ two impeachment efforts were frivolous

As Russia invades Ukraine, shelling civilians and reportedly committing war crime-level brutality, President Biden has put harsh sanctions to Kremlin-tied businesses, banks and oligarchs, but not the oil and gas industry. Both Republicans and Democrats, even House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have called for the U.S. to quit doing business with Russia's oil and gas industry. But the White House, forced to grapple with inflation at levels not seen in 40 years, cited the potential rise in costs at the pump and has so far resisted bipartisan pressure to ban Russian fuel imports.
