Republicans have long had a toughness fetish. Going back to the early days of the Cold War, its flip side has been the insinuation that Democrats are weaklings ready to sell out the country to its enemies, with the GOP eager to serve proudly and unapologetically as America's lone defenders abroad.
No one should be surprised that the script has already been updated to account for recent distressing events on the border separating Russia and Ukraine.
No Damon Biden fanboy, Putin both feared and respected Trump. He has Zero respect for the pedophile in chief.

Anti-Trumper fantisizing and projection. Trump was very consistent where it mattered. He was simply quick on the trigger on media smears, becsusr he had seen how that worked in the past.

Putin knows Zhou and his family are corrupt. Putin also knows Zhou is a light weight - he talks tough (Sheriff Joe routine) but in reality Zhou is all hat and no cattle (with apologies to Chuck Shumer). Anyway, Putin and Xi and everyone else knows they have about ten months to run roughshod over the US and our "allies" (who no longer trust us). With a Republican controlled congress, it will be more difficult to take what they (our enemies) want without facing some sort of consequences. If "Orange Man" comes back in 2024 (and I hope he does) - Katie bar the door because Mr. Irrational will be ready to settle scores.

Biden has been saying for years how tough he would be with Putin, but when he has a chance it's tail between the legs Biden and Putin takes what he wants. Just like leading from behid Obama.
Trump increased oil production here hurting Putin
Trump sold actual weapons to Ukraine hurting Putin
Trump was playing Putin's game and winning!
The Left is stupid!

Working theory is that Putin doesn't want NATO on his door step.
Truly enlightened leadership, on either side,
would have asked for Russia to join NATO.
That would have allowed Putin to "nudge" WesternCiv
back from the edge of the woke abyss,
the integration of gas markets, ( which is what this is really all about)
And, eventually a more integrated and powerful Europe.
Too bad all the imagination ran out,
and we all have to watch horrific reruns...

Are you kidding me with this article? Who's making Russia great again? It ain't Trump. Didn't this jerk author remember what happened to the Russians in Syria or Soleimani? Both were annihilated! Nobody messed with Trump. Trump threatened to pull out of NATO if the grifter member countries didn't pay what was pledged--two percent of their GDP. Trump was not capricious. And if you call keeping your cards close to vest is unpredictable, then so be it, but when you are negotiating, you NEVER tell the other side what you are going to do. Biden has already done that by saying he'll put on sanctions. I don't think Putin can stop laughing at what a jerk Biden is.

So Damon thinks Putin was a “pussycat” with Trump because Trump was a “fanboy”, and he's flexing his muscles now because Biden is such a tough guy? I must not understand the premise this article. That makes no sense.

Leftist must constantly rationalize in the face of the truth. It's easier than admitting they were wrong about Trump (and so many other things).

Liberals can type-up their little columns like this all day long. None of it will matter if Putin rolls over Ukraine and is breathing down the neck of NATO countries under Biden's watch.

Ah, that must be the reason that the Iranians released the American hostages the very day Reagan was inaugurated. It was his Republican toughness. Thank God for it!

An example of the derangement so common among the soi-disant: Putin held off invading Ukraine because he was NOT afraid of Trump. Makes sense if you're a leftwing nitwit.

I note that the article doesn't allow comments. Trump was dissatisfied with NATO because the other members weren't paying what they owed. Once that was resolved (another Trump victory) NATO went on as usual. I also see that the author of this pathetic hit piece fails to acknowledge that Trump was adamantly opposed to the Ukrainian gas pipeline because he knew it would give Russia leverage in Europe.

The reason I dismiss this "take on the current situation" is that its premise is dumb.
Serious thinkers are actually supposed to believe that Putin didn't rattle his saber during the Trump administration because Trump was his fanboy? Come on.

Disgusting and dishonest article.
DJT threatened to stop being the sugar daddy to NATO, forcing the other countries in the alliance to pony up the money they promised to spend on defense.

The Week started arriving at my house a couple of years ago, unbidden. I read the first two issues, and then just tossed the remaining three or four that they sent. Clear leftist propaganda. I didn't read it when it was delivered to my mailbox.....won't bother with this, either. Nothing factual to be learned, I am sure.

Dishonest article, dishonest premise, and the good stuff was left out that shows Trump wasn't a fanboy. On February 7, 2018, American special ops noticed Syrian and Russians about to attack an oil refinery. The Americans contacted Russian authorities on a 'deconfliction' line and the Russians denied that the forces were theirs. The American forces opened up with artillery and air strikes. About 200 Russian mercenaries were killed. Russia pretended nothing happened, which was hard with 200 plus corpses laying around.

Interesting that Damon Linker snipes at Trump for saying (and I paraphrase) that all of this could have been avoided if the election had not been rigged. Well, Damon, sometimes the truth is as simple as that. When dominoes fall, they always start somewhere. And the simple truth is that our enemies stayed away from us when Donald Trump was POTUS.

Hey, we have a player in #16. Type away blue wave. You are going to be even busier as the progressive feces show hits the fan of reality. Double debt? You mean like the PPP, pull out, lock down, inflation pumping, energy blowout, you guys came up with? At least the 'orange' man had an economy that could have covered his debt. The debt that made more people working at more jobs than a fascist rat could imagine in their multicolored world of insanity. Companies coming back, domestic manufacturing up, domestic energy sources up and actual push back against illegal invasion. You didn't like that so you whine about banks 'owning' him? LOL, he renegotiated more loans from more banks, on his terms, than you type nonsensical words as you pontificate here. You should bask in the knowledge that your hissy fit means exactly as much as my amusement at the posting.

Interesting take on the current situation growing out of the past. Many will dismiss it for whatever reasons. And the simple fact is that Putin has now maneuvered NATO (mainly the US) and Biden into a trap. Time to put up or shut up. And NATO (Euro Division) obliges by baring its behind while firmly standing far back behind the US. (If trouble starts, the Croatians have already announced they are going home.) What's it going to be, Joe? A US war with Russia over Ukraine, or a retreat by NATO?
