Benton City, Wash.—Washington produces the second-highest amount of wine in the country, just behind California. But despite the vast number of winemakers in our region, very few are owned by women or people of color. It’s something Shae Frichette, with Frichette Winery in Benton City knows all too well.(Snip)“When I first came into wine, I didn't see any Black female winemakers and so I just didn't see that represented so I really had to figure out my place in wine,” Frichette said. According to the Washington Wine Association, there are just over a thousand licensed wineries in the state. Just three of them are black-owned.

Comments:

Does everything have to come down to race? Guess so, never mind that her husband is White and it's probably really easy to get big set-aside loans when your business is headed up by a black woman. Meanwhile, the brothers be askin' if you can add jolly ranchers, skittles, and codeine cough syrup all up in dat.

It's a media February talking point. Hearst's Houston Chronicle ran an article in today's edition that hit the same talking points on the opening of a new minority owned local micro brewery.

Every time I read one of these articles, I can't help but feel like MLK is spinning in his grave at a very fast pace!!! He dreamed of a country where people would not be judged by anything except their character. For most white people, that is where we have been for a very long time. Yet here is another woman who makes it all about her gender and race. MLK is not happy!!!

You want more women, blacks, lesbians, transgenders and all the other 'protected' class to be more a part of (fill in the blank, NFL owner, Winemaker, blah, blah, blah) then buy the dang things. Seeing and buying isn't about race. Its about an agreed price. Once there was the argument that no blacks drove Caddies or Lincolns or other cars. Well guess what, blacks bought em and now there isn't a racial issue with luxury cars. Quit whining and gets more blacks to buy wineries.

And furthermore - - there are no black women plate spinners - - anywhere in the USA. Rumor has it - - that the companies which manufacture the long poles that the plates spin on - - are refusing to sell them to black women. How can a black woman succeed as a plate spinner - - without the necessary long poles?

I don't know but if I was rich, practically a requirement for owning a wine operation, and black I probably wouldn't want to put my money into wine, unless it was to buy bottles to resell. Somehow I doubt racism has anything to do with it. But whiny people get the attention and now this wine maker has some.

Fresh suspicion that Covid may have been tinkered with in a lab emerged today after scientists found genetic material owned by Moderna in the virus's spike protein. They identified a tiny snippet of code that is identical to part of a gene patented by the vaccine maker three years before the pandemic. It was discovered in SARS-CoV-2's unique furin cleavage site, the part that makes it so good at infecting people and separates it from other coronaviruses.(Snip)They claim there is a one-in-three-trillion chance Moderna's sequence randomly appeared through natural evolution. But there is some debate about whether the match is as rare
