Use of rape-kit DNA to probe other crimes
shocks prosecutors

San Francisco—The San Francisco district attorney's stunning claim that California crime labs are using DNA from sexual assault survivors to investigate unrelated crimes shocked prosecutors nationwide, and advocates said the practice could affect victims' willingness to come forward. District Attorney Chesa Boudin said he became aware of the “opaque practice” last week after prosecutors found a report among hundreds of pages of evidence in the case against a woman recently charged with a felony property crime. The papers referred to a DNA sample collected from the woman during a 2016 rape investigation.(Snip)Boudin said someone at the crime lab told his office the practice was a standard procedure.

Comments:

Who needs fingerprints when everything is digital? With data on file, including facial scans, anyone can be found guilty of anything using evidence that can be planted using technology; straight out of dystopian science fiction.

Mr. Boudin is either ignorant or disingenuous. It has been a standard tool in the the law enforcement industry for over a decade.

I favor this only in the context of tracking down a criminal or serial killer, in the commission of crime. Not if it's a victim's DNA.

#1, various large police departments dispute that claim, though today we celebrate having as little privacy as possible. FTA: Several other law enforcement agencies in California and elsewhere around the U.S. pushed back against Boudin’s assertion that it was a common practice. New York Police Department Detective Sophia Mason said the agency “does not enter victims’ DNA profiles into databases or use them in unrelated investigations.” Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said: “Certainly the department does not do that.” District attorneys in San Mateo, Santa Clara and Sacramento counties also swatted down the suggestion, as did representatives from San Diego police, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department crime lab and others. In Oakland, law enforcement uses sexual assault victim DNA only "in the context of the case for which the evidence was submitted, not to investigate other cases.”

There is no public policy served by changing this policy, other than creating immunity for female criminals, which, no doubt, the feminist world favors entirely. Do a crime, do the time. No immunity for being a victim of crime yourself.

I believe this is a Democrat protecting criminals' rights again. The DNA of the "residue" left by a rapist should certainly be in a database to be matched against DNA from other crimes. Failure to do so only helps criminals.

Two activists who torched an NYPD homeless outreach van on a Greenwich Village street in 2020 were each sentenced to six months in prison on Friday—as a federal judge chided the well-educated, radical duo for the “aberrant act.” The firebugs, Elaine Carberry, 38, and Corey Smith, 26, will also have to serve six months in home confinement when they’re sprung from federal prison and pay more than $72,000 in restitution, Judge Lewis Liman ordered. At the sentencing Friday morning, Liman credited both Smith and Carberry as being active members in New York’s LGBTQ community and said he believed they are committed to social justice—but added their crime

The teacher wife of a US Navy nuclear engineer pleaded guilty Friday to taking part in a plot to sell submarine secrets to a foreign country, just four days after her husband admitted his crimes and told prosecutors he'd help them nail her. Former private school teacher Diana Toebbe, 46, admitted taking part in her husband Jonathan Toebbe's plan to sell information on US nuclear submarines to an unidentified foreign buyer, suspected to be in France. The plea deal she struck means she will serve a maximum of 36 months in prison, far shorter than the 12-and-a-half to 17 years her spouse faces, and the maximum life term

Afghan evacuees made it to U.S. soil without being checked through all the government’s security databases, an inspector general reported Thursday in a devastating investigation that confirms critics’ worst fears about the program. After rerunning some of the names, officials spotted at least 50 Afghans with “potentially significant security concerns” who made it the U.S. despite the Biden administration’s assurances to the contrary. Making matters worse, the government appears to have lost track of most of them inside the U.S., the Defense Department’s inspector general said. It looked at a sampling of 31 security risk evacuees identified as of Sept. 17 and found only three could be located.

Experts are warning that an increase in buried bodies as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic could be having an impact in the environment. In the U.S. alone, the number of people who have died with COVID-19 exceeded 900,000 this month and the number is increasing all the time. Around the world, the death toll is over 5.8 million according to the World Health Organization (WHO), though some estimates of excess mortality—a measure comparing all deaths recorded with those expected to occur—have put that figure close to 20 million. What this means is that burial facilities have faced unprecedented pressure as they attempt to allocate space and resources to store the bodies

Democrats are beginning to want change in the White House, whether it is a new strategy since the administration has minimal accomplishments or new top staffers surrounding President Joe Biden. While Biden’s poll numbers are falling — recently receiving his lowest approval numbers at 33 percent — it appears that he is failing on the political front, according to a recent report from NBC News. The report stated that the president’s message isn’t resonating with Americans. His party’s chances of keeping their congressional majority are slim, his Build Back Better plan is dead, he failed at fixing the Chinese coronavirus, and inflation is on the rise.

So far, Justin Trudeau’s invocation of the Emergencies Act hasn’t yielded any overt scenes of state power; no clouds of tear gas or columns of troops being marched into the capital. But it’s very different story within the Canadian financial sector. One of the most far-reaching implications of the Emergencies Act is what it prescribes for the Canadian financial system. According to the government’s new Emergency Economic Measures Order, every single bank, credit union, investment broker and insurance provider in the country has been deputized to figure out if they have a blockader as a client, and to immediately freeze their accounts if so.
