Woman falls to her death from rising drawbridge
in downtown West Palm Beach

A woman fell to her death Sunday afternoon from the Royal Park Bridge connecting Palm Beach to downtown West Palm Beach when the drawbridge began opening before she could move off its moveable span, police said. West Palm Beach police say the woman was walking off the bridge with a bicycle and was within 10 feet of the barrier arms that halt traffic when the drawbridge started to rise, sending her careening into an open chasm. A man standing on the other side of the barrier arms grabbed her as she fell but could not sustain her grip, police said. She plummeted more than 50 feet.

Comments:

I still can't quite tell from the story what was happening, was she doing something she shouldn't have been doing and how the fall happened. Sounds like a nightmare, though, those drawbridges have always scared me.

How horrible. From what I read, she was just walking with her bike across the bridge when it started to go up. Lots of questions for the "privately contracted" bridge tender. How could he not see that there was someone ON the bridge? Was he drunk or high or what?

Thought draw bridges were slow. Why didn't the bridge tender stop the bridge? People had to be yelling.

Tragic accident. Not enough details to ascertain where the culpability lies. Did the tender simply fail to notice her? Did she duck under the barrier thinking she could traverse the bridge before it moved? She was walking a bike instead of riding it, so she must have thought she had time or was simply unaware. Condolences to her family.

I'm ignorant of bridge operation. Was the bridge even attended by a 'keeper' or was it run remotely with cameras on the bridge?

Re #7, all the bridges I have dealt with on a boat were tended by an operator, and you used your horn to request bridge be opened for boat passage. Been through many in the south Florida bays and channels around Miami.

This would be a more common occurrence if bridge-tenders were all federal government employees. Since the bridge management is contracted out to a private company, I can only imagine that this is another example of the low-quality employee you get in a "full employment" economy in which few individuals respond to job offers.

Going out on a limb, so to speak, my guess is either the bridge operator or the bike-walker - or both were on their cellphone when this tragic event unfolded.

TIJUANA, Mexico — About a hundred members of the police, National Guard and army on Sunday evicted 381 migrants, mainly Central Americans and Mexicans, from a makeshift camp they had been staying in for almost a year in Tijuana at the U.S. border crossing. The migrants’ tents around El Chaparral crossing were demolished with the help of excavators and trucks while their inhabitants loaded their few belongings into bags and suitcases to be transferred to three local shelters. “It was a relocation that had to be carried out carefully to avoid a collapse,” Tijuana Mayor Montserrat Caballero Ramírez told reporters, saying the families were living in a state of “insecurity”

Germany, as we well know with its Russian gas capers, is a highly industrialized society in need of a lot of energy. Fine and dandy. But how they get it presents increasingly bad options. They got rid of their nuclear power in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown after a big earthquake in Japan, (despite Germany not being in a quake zone), driving themselves to dependency on foreign suppliers. That's presented problems for them what with Russia filling that role, so their other recourse has been the one Joe Biden is touting for America: Green energy -- like wind and solar power. It's costly, requiring state subsidization,

After Joe Biden, Tony Blinken and other Biden administration officials blithely assured that the number of Americans left behind in Afghanistan after the chaotic U.S. pullout was miniscule, just a minor rounding error, Congress has come up with a more accurate figure. According to the Daily Caller: As many as 9,000 American citizens were left in Afghanistan when the U.S. military withdrew from the country Aug. 31, according to a report released Thursday by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In public statements, Biden administration officials, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, claimed that only 100-150 Americans remained in Afghanistan and had contacted the U.S. government with a desire to leave.

As part of a new study, Cambridge University experts reviewed a variety of DIY hacks people have used to make masks fit better, including using rubber bands or tape. Curiously, they found the most effective tactic was to wrap pantyhose around the bottom half of the face—on top of a mask.
