A Dutch city has agreed to spend weeks taking down a historic bridge so Jeff Bezos’ new gigantic superyacht can reach the open seas this summer. The Amazon founder’s 417-foot-long three-masted ship is currently under construction in The Netherlands, but the pleasure boat will be too tall to pass under Rotterdam’s landmark Koningshaven Bridge, which has a 130 foot clearance, according to The NL Times, which cited Dutch-language outlet Rijnmond. As a work-around, the mega-billionaire and the boatmaker Oceano reportedly asked Rotterdam officials to temporarily dismantle the iconic bridge, and pledged to reimburse

Make the bridge rise up and down like those bridges in Fort Lauderdale that stop traffic every time a medium size sailboat wants to go from the canal to the Atlantic for a cruise in the open water. Somebody didn't think ahead.

Bezo's told the Dutch this will be received well with China and the Washington Post will run good stories about them.

If Bezos can pay for it and legally do it why not? That mega yacht isn't going to fly out of the river. Nice yacht!

Why didn't they just tell him and the builder to leave off the top few feet and add it after it got to open water? Or when designing the ship why wasn't this little problem taken into consideration before the final OK?

Why couldn't they install the masts AFTER it passed under the bridge?

Wouldn't it be cheaper just to mount the masts after the ship passes under the bridge>?

Plutarch portage ... Bezos should have been advised that he's building a life-size ship in a bottle. Have him bear the trouble of working around the oversize issue. Maybe he can charter a hundred helicopters to lift it with a giant hammock and fly it over the bridge, instead.
Or along the lines of his imposition on them: Have HIM temporarily dismantle the ship and reassemble it on the other side of the bridge.

If the masts haven't been stepped ( installed ) leave them off untill you're past the bridge. If
they're allready stepped, wow, this really difficult, um, REMOVE THEM until you're past
the bridge and then reinstall ! If that process is more complex and difficult than
modifying the bridge, TWICE, then somebody is doing something WRONG !
What has happened to common sense or is it just that there just no 'app' for
common sense ?

The idiots who own the shipyard need to move to a location where they can actually get their ships out to the ocean.
What sort of a nitwit makes a shipyard upriver from a low bridge and expects the city to dismantle it and reassemble it each time they build a big ship?
These people are idiots.

There are now numerous mega sail yachts, and even some "Green Freighters" too tall to even get into ANY major port City, too tall for the Golden Gate, too tall for NYC bridges, Too tall for any European port. Yet the only time the Owners even board them is anchored near shore somewhere.Though one of the largest Green Freighter has telescoping masts that retract to allow it into some ports....though it still is not configured to be easily loaded/unloaded at any harbor/pier facility in current existence.
