Just six of the 109 affordable homes Brad Pitt's Make It Right Foundation built for low-income residents in New Orleans following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 are still in livable condition nearly 20 years later. A vast majority of the homes, which were built for $26.8 million, are riddled with construction-related problems that have led to mold, termites, rotting wood and flooding, urban geographer Judith Keller wrote for Market Watch, and as of early 2022, six of the homes are vacant because of mold, rot and other structural issues after they were built without essential needs for the city's sub-tropical climate.

Any house needs maintenance - paint, roof repairs, yard work, and so on. If you don't do the maintenance, they'll eventually fall apart. Most of the pictures look like little or no maintenance was done over the life of the house. Staying on top of small problems keeps them from turning into big problems. If you're not willing to put in the effort, you should be a renter, not a homeowner.

$26.8 M came from who, the US taxpayers? With that much money was there corruption in the building process, the housing inspections, etc? Were the materials substandard? Did anyone audit the project? Was HHS involved? Who made $$$ from this project? Questions, questions, questions. No answers. Why? Who is covering this up?

Using wood in a sub-tropical climate is asking for trouble. It’s interesting that most of the residents seem to be waiting for someone else to take care of their problems. Do they own the homes or are they renting them?

One can't just throw money at the poor. If Pitt really wanted to do something, he should have stayed and overseen the project. Then he should have made sure the people who lived there had the means of taking care of the houses. It goes to show that rich people don't always know what they are doing. They do it to make themselves look good. What a mess!

I agree with all the posters but one house pictured has windows that are too small for a Barbie house. Brand new that house wasn’t livable.

Or give the money to Habitat for Humanity to oversee selection of ownership and construction.

These people paid $150,000 for their homes. The article doesn't state if the people bought the home and the land or if they bought the home and rent the lot.
Many homes are without gutters.
Were these homes built to code?
Modular homes would have been better and a better value.

I wonder how many of those metal roofs leak because of half-baked solar panel installations on them?

Brad, here is your gratitude. You only provided housing for 20 years. They were expecting more.

My house ws built in 1978 and the more vulnerable joists and studs were pressure treated. No termites, no mold but one very annoying gopher family has kept me on edge. I guess I can live with that. Oh, I also performed regular maintenence like updating the plumbing and electrical. Build like this in New Orleans, not a problem.

“Fix my house”
There’s the root of the problem. I live in very humid Charleston, SC and we are required to have a termite bond in order to get home owner’s insurance. We are required to have flood insurance. We also have our house power-washed every spring or it would look like those in the photos which are covered with green mold. We had our crawl space encapsulated to prevent mold getting into the house. It’s all standard maintenance when one lives in a humid climate.
Fix your own house, gimme dat. Or live with the consequences.

No good deed goes unpunished with this crowd. Probably a combination of shoddy work and bad Green design, but maybe more so the residents not doing even the most basic maintenance on the structures. Waterproof the decks, repaint the exterior when it needs it, pay for regular exterminator service, keep the AC units running properly? Ain't nobody got time for dat, which is a clear-cut case of racism.
