KENOSHA — Kyle Rittenhouse's rifle will be dismantled at the Wisconsin state crime lab in April, and he will get to keep nearly $1 million of the crowd-funded bail that was posted to keep him out of jail during his homicide trial last year. At a short hearing Friday, Judge Bruce Schroeder approved two deals. One, agreed to by Rittenhouse, was to let authorities destroy the rifle. The other was to divvy up his $2 million bail with actor Ricky Schroder and a Texas non-profit organization led by Atlanta lawyer Lin Wood. Under the agreement, $920,000 will be paid, in trust, to Richards & Dimmer, the Racine law firm

As someone who is not American, my prevailing image of the U.S. has been one of an enormous, extravagant carnival. Static geographically but traveling existentially, it teems with the exotic and the entertaining. Are there carnies trying to rip off naive souls? Of course. Is there a House of Horrors? Sure. But the whole is still vivid and life-affirming.This image, idealistic as it is, is under threat. Money-grubbing contractors are ramping up prices. Humorless scolds in management are closing the best rides. Below the surface, meanwhile, thieves are running rampant and the bodies of the sick and injured stud the fairground. Joe Biden traveled to Pittsburgh today to talk about Build Back Better and infrastructure.Hours before he got there, the Forbes Avenue bridge collapsed, injuring 10 people.(Tweet) So, he used that as a talking point about the importance of infrastructure. Infrastructure is desperately needed, but I wouldn’t trust for a minute that money allocated by Democrats will go to the things that need infrastructure help. But Biden faced a different problem when he arrived — while some Democrats were in attendance to greet him, people like State Attorney General Josh Shapiro, the likely Democratic nominee in the race for governor, were not there to meet with him because of “scheduling conflicts.”

When most Americans hear the term “Capitol Police,” they likely conjure visions of uniformed officers manning metal detectors at the numerous congressional buildings or helping tourists navigate the sprawling Capitol grounds: a D.C. version of a mall cop. That imagery, however, is in stark contrast to reality as Democrats have weaponized yet another federal agency to target their political enemies on the Right. After January 6, 2021, Capitol Police officials announced plans to expand beyond the legislatively authorized purview of the agency and open offices in Florida and California, as well as in other states.
