STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — According to Mayor Eric Adams, it “makes no sense” uniformed police officers aren’t required to live in New York City. Adams addressed the policy Monday following a press conference about gun violence, the New York Post reported. “I want you here in this city,” Adams said. “I want you to go to the cleaners. I want you to go to the churches, to the supermarket, your children should be in our schools. We shouldn’t have 30 something percent of officers residing [out of New York City].” Uniformed members of the NYPD must be New York residents

Brilliant thinking, Eric! Who cares if 40% of all the best policemen leave the force? There are plenty of quality replacements living in the housing projects.

Endless monolithic commands that make sense superficially until you dig into each individual’s circumstances. Next it will occur to him that it makes no sense to have a mayor who isn’t already an acting mayor. Why have on the job training?

Must school teachers live in the neighborhood served by their school? What about librarians? Every city employee?
Adams has huge problems to work on. Where a policeman lives is not one of them. But to be fair he wasn't mandating, yet, he was only expressing a viewpoint.
IMHO State employees should live within three miles of the Capitol.

Because it's none of your business what an employee does when he's off the clock?
And Mayor Adams, did it ever occur to you to ask why cops don't want to live in NYC? That is a question worth asking.

Is he going to provide affordable housing in nicer areas for cops and their families?
Who would move from a decent suburb where their kids can walk safely and have nice schools to a NYC ghetto just to keep a thankless and dangerous job?
If it was me I'd move to another place entirely first. Same effort to move and a move should improve your circuit not make them worse.
Guy is a total idiot.

Stupid requirement. Every city is short police officers and considering the quality of candidates to pick from in the city, the shortage will always be a problem. I wonder how many current NYC police officers used to live in the city but moved out because of the leadership in charge of the city. After seeing the requirements needed to become a police officer when my son tried becoming an officer, I doubt one percent of those interested could pass the initial review. My son soured on the whole process after passing everything and being turned down from the only thing we could figure out was his of his sex and color of his skin. Can't have white males becoming police officers. I wonder how many who live in the city could pass three 3-hour long polygraph exams like my son did.

Officers know better than anyone why NOT to live in the City. After being marked as a COP in NYC... it could shorten your life expectancy almost down to being Asian in NYC. Either way, living in the city is far more dangerous than COVID. And don't take the subway to work... Even the new mayor tried it and had to call 911 on his first day.

I have nothing but disgust for him as a leader. I saw a news clip of him being on someone's TV show and he was smoking a dope cigarette, offered it and other things to the TV guy who laughingly pushed them away. He is a leader, for Pete's sake. Just glad he isn't my mayor. Electeds and New York seem to have an affinity for drugs.

I seem to recall that it has been said that Adams himself does not live in NYC or even the State of New York for that matter. Seems he spends most of his time across the river in New Jersey - though he, of course, claims otherwise.

LOL! It shows good sense. They get a safer, cleaner, saner environment to live in, at a LOWER COST of living.
The price is the commute.
This Adams character isn't very bright, is he?

It isn't "Them" per se that he wants living inside the City...it is their wives and kids. He wants their FAMILIES to be out in the open, fair game for the friends/neighbors and children of the people the Cops arrest to hunt down and "Punish" for their fathers job enforcing the Laws.
He wants their children to be in the same (failing) classrooms as the feral children of the perps they put away.
Maybe he can provide some Highrise Tower housing for "Just Cops" like NYC does for criminals...Rent free, just as NYC does for criminals.

It's starting to feel like the early years of the Soviet Union more and more.
Pretty soon, private ownership of homes will not be allowed (since it's not "fair" to minorities who live on welfare and can't afford to buy a nice house in the suburbs like all the stupid working white people).
So we will confiscate all private property and build giant apartment complexes where you will be forced to live. It doesn't matter if you have 6 kids, you will still only get a tiny 2 bedroom apartment. If you complain, it's on the cattle cars to the "re-education" camps for you!!!

It makes no sense for Manhattan to have a DA who is unilaterally vetoing criminal laws as enacted by the legislature. Where cops live is probably #7,843 on the punch list to make NYC livable again. Hizzoner needs to set priorities rather than deflect responsibility.

Where does Adams think the police officers will live given housing prices in the city? Where does he think police officers kids will go to school given the horrible NYC schools? Why live in the city when just a short drive away they can live safely with much better schools in Nassau County, Westchester, Orange County, Northern NJ, or Long Island? It is worth the drive to now your family safe from the zoo that the city has devolved into. Adams needs to remember that not everyone can afford to live in a luxury hi-rise in Manhattan, So-Ho, or the Upper East Side. Not everyone can afford an elite private school for their kids. Not everyone has a police security detail and gets to live in a gated mansion at the publics expense like the Mayor.

That's ridiculous. They may have other members of the family who are disabled or whose job requires them to be farther away, they may want to live in safer neighborhoods with better schools, and they may not want to pay 4.4% of their income to the city as residents. Nassau & Suffolk Counties already have better starting pay than NYC. This is one of the stupidest ideas he's come up with and he's hardly had time to come up with more!

Finally moved to Nashville last year...same monthly costs, he has a 3bdr home, big yard, nice neighborhood, with a POOL...AND a car.

Therefore a law must be passed to remedy that which makes no sense to an idiot.

I remember when it was common for public employees to be required to live in their community. Years ago, I remember we had some relatives who taught in Milwaukee's public schools and at the time (in the 60s) had to live in the city.
Guess what? The schools and municipalities negoiated that away in their contracts with the public employees unions. All over the country. Perhaps for first responders (police, fire, EMS) they had to live close enough to respond to a call within a set time frame.
Occasionally, a city will require some of its key personnel to live in the community. We had a city manager who when he was hired, lived in a nearby suburban city. His wife had no interest in living in our town or sending her kids to our schools. So, the city manager bought an inexpensive house. Rarely, if ever, lived there. One of the locals pulled up his city utility bills. Let's just say he normally paid the minimum charge as he used very little electricity and water at the house. Didn't claim his homestead exemption on the house in our city until he was called on the carpet on it. And he sold it fast as soon as he retired.
So, what's to stop a couple dozen of NYC's finest to rent a room somewhere as their "official residence" while they spend most of their time at their "country home" in the suburbs?
What a maroon.

In a former life, I had a rental apartment in NJ. A man chose to live there as he wanted to be a police officer in this town. It was a requirement to live in the town to become a full-time police officer.
Several months, after he was full-time, he moved 30+ minutes away to a home in the country.

So what does Adams prescribe to solve that cops living out of the city situation, have 30 percent of the police force sell their homes in the suburbs and move back into the city?

The fact that Adams accepted the position as mayor of New York City at this point in time proves that he is clueless to the problems he is facing. The naive and clearly unworkable solutions he has states thus far also point to limited knowledge of the complexity of fixing anything.
New York City residents need to rethink their requirements in mayors. This makes three disasters in a row.
