A University of Washington language guide is calling everyday words used by Americans “problematic.”The University of Washington Information Technology department released an “inclusive language guide” that lists a number of “problematic words” that are “racist,” “sexist,” “ageist,” or “homophobic.”According to the guide, words such as “grandfather,” “housekeeping,” “minority,” “ninja,” and “lame” are considered “problematic words.” For example, the language guide states that the word “lame” is considered problematic because it’s “ableist.”

I think I would go out of my way to use these words. You risk, if this is a paper for a class, or a discussion IN class, the Prof grading you lower, but you also might find that (amazingly) a few Profs might look at boycotting (personcotting?) such words and phrases makes for true censorship in what is supposed to be a free society. In the meantime, the University looks beyond foolish.

Since the title of grandfather is something earned after rearing children to the point of raising their own families, I think grandfather is a title of honor, and to grump about it shows the ignorance of these Ivory Tower liberals. Would they rather somebody used the 'r' word to tell somebody their ideas are stupid rather than the kinder term lame? Housekeeping is a problem for them I suspect because they don't do it themselves, they probably hire it done. So they see it as an insult of some kind if their cleaning person is a minority. My stepmother raised her 5 kids by being a housekeeper for some really nice people and did very well for herself before meeting and marrying my dad. This is just more ridiculous spewage from this school. I guess they want the media attention.

The French have an academy the governs the how the French language is used. The result is an official and published language that does not reflect the actual usage of the population. (In case you're wondering why the French laugh at your high school French.) I find the use of the word "ableist" problematic, no to mention awkward.

I believe that we are missing the point on this. This is not a directive for students language. This is put out by the University IT department. The University no doubt purchases millions worth of merchandise from vendors each year. This is to control the language used by these vendors in their businesses with all customers, not just in their dealings with the University. The University guide says to send this to a prospective vendor: "Unfortunately, in working with your product/service we have identified language that can be considered offensive due to its racist, ableist and/or sexist origins,” the email prompt states. “Can you let us know what efforts you are undertaking to move away from this language so as to create a more inclusive product/service?” This is intimidation pure and simple, it is telling all vendors that if you want to get some of the allocated tax dollars that I have, you must follow my language guide lines even when dealing with other customers. In other words, agree with me or we will drive you out of the market place. This is sick and Orwellian.

In the 1950s a series of Congressional committees were formed with the ostensible goal to root out communists in the United States. Sen. Joe McCarthy became the face of the effort and its inevitable lighting rod. The genesis of the hearings may be traced to McCarthy delivering a speech to a West Virginia woman’s club, and famously holding a piece of paper in his hand, declaring he had the names of 205 communists. In fact, there was no such list. It was theater.During that decade several hearings were chaired by McCarthy on the Senate side and others chaired by House members. Each committee threw wide nets to fish for communists

A solid majority of Americans know that the 2020 election was fraudulent. That’s a big problem for a country with a representative government, one in which the leaders are supposed to represent the will of the people. We’re a nation of laws ostensibly flowing from a Constitution that sets out explicit limitations on the federal government’s powers and protects a variety of citizens’ rights upon which said government cannot infringe. To the degree that a significant majority of citizens feel that the leader of this government was not constitutionally elected, that’s a problem. For all its importance, our Constitution is nothing more than a piece of paper. It doesn’t make laws.
