The chief executives of major U.S. passenger and cargo carriers on Monday warned of an impending 'catastrophic' aviation crisis on Wednesday when AT&T and Verizon finally deploy their new 5G services. The two companies have spent tens of billions of dollars to license the 3.7 to 3.98 GHz frequency range for its new high-speed C-Band 5G service. But officials with the FAA and airplane manufacturer Boeing have warned that there is potential for interfere with vital aircraft instruments that operate in the 4.2 to 44 GHz range, such as radio altimeters that tell pilots their altitude as they fly in low visibility.

I fly an emergency helicopter in a major metropolitan area.
We, who regularly fly at lower levels, day and night rely on our radar altimeter when landing in un improved (not an airport, but a highway or ball field, etc.) rely on the "RADALT" as a tool to assist in the safe landing/departure from those LZ's
Additionally, the FAA has determined that the frequencies on which "5G" operate, can interfere with the current landing automated systems on most commercial airline equipment.
I submit that this is not "Bla-Bla-Bla", but a serious threat to our air commerce in this country.
This article speaks to "the big iron", but gets the point across.

#1 part 2,
The new date for implementation of this potential interference is 1/19/22.
We pilots who operate for the most part outside of the "protected" airspace of an airport have had to complete FAA approved training on this debacle prior to 1/19/22 in order to understand how to mitigate these challenges.
I invite anyone to go to the FAA website and review the information....this is outside the control of airlines, etc.
BTW, I checked NOTAMS for my region, and every airport in the area has the same caution regarding "5G", so anyone flying into Philly, beware of delays etc.

I hope this is resolved soon. My wife and I are flying over the ocean to Hawaii on the 31st. One of my boys is a captain for Frontier. He attests that the concern is real and is NOT another Y2K scam.

The airlines are having a really hard time. They drag the unvaccinated off by the hair. Fire their unvaxxed pilots. The government locks them down. Now their altimeters don't work. Being a government slave is not very good for business.

If this is real and if an airplane is caused to crash in a populated area near an airport, who's responsible, and would any life of loss matter to the USA when there's money to be made? It's OK for the government to withhold possible lifesaving treatments for Covid in order to build fear and generate vaccine sales, and to force shots that can have fatal reactions on people in exchange for minimal protection that wears off in a few months, so why should 5G be any different?

Time to spend the money on developing a more efficient altimeter. No way does it need that much bandwidth. The rest of the users have been shoved into narrower bands. It's time to get off your high horse and find a tech solution . Hint: GPS is an option.

There is no mystery involved in radio frequency propagation and interference. NONE. It's not mRNA, it's Radio Waves. It's possible that crappy equipment with sloppy implementation could suffer interference problems. So, let's stop all technological advancements to preserve the use of existing crap that MIGHT have a problem? They can't demonstrate this problem, and the vast majority of the US is already using 5G, (including my current internet connection). A NOTAM gives the argument no more gravitas than any other nameless, unsupported government pronouncement. Like when the Feds notified all police departments that US Veterans needed higher scrutiny because we were a bunch of Domestic Terrorists.

You mean the same delays when television stations used to blast out 100,000 watt signals on the very same frequencies. I remember when airplanes dropped like acorns when the morning broadcasters turned on their equipment.

Is 5G not in use in Europe, Asia, elsewhere ? How are their aircraft doing ?

I can understand that 5G may pose a problem. What I cannot understand is why the airlines have not taken steps to avoid the problem. They're been given several delays already. All planes should by now have been tested and some means of coping with the interference should have been studied and implemented. If this does indeed pose a serious hazard, the 5G telecoms will take an enormous PR hit and may be sued into bankruptcy if a plane crash-lands.

The telcos deserve to make massive profits, as do the airlines, so the American solution would be to funnel billions of taxpayer dollars their way. Has anyone seen Mayor Pete, the most competent married Gay man in US history, this side of BHO? Maybe cruising a highway mens room as part of his secretary of trans duties.
