Fed-Ex proposes to install laser-based
missile defense system on its cargo planes
as a countermeasure against heat-seeking missiles

The Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday that it's reviewing a proposal from FedEx that would allow the company to install a laser-based missile-defense on its Airbus A321-200 airplanes. FedEx Corp in October 2019 applied for approval to use a feature that emits infrared laser energy outside the aircraft as a countermeasure against heat-seeking missiles, the FAA disclosed in a document.(Snip)The airline industry and several governments have been grappling with the threat to airliners from shoulder-fired missiles known as Man-Portable Air Defense Systems, or MANPADs, for decades, with some using infrared systems to target an aircraft's engines.

Comments:

A poorly written article raises the question, how many shoulder-launched missiles did the Pentagon give to the Taliban, which claims to be short on cash? Our brilliant leaders left some $83 billion dollars' worth of US weaponry on the ground in Afghanistan, and our national propaganda network had very little to say about it.

Looks like the Union Pacific Railroad needs to put defensive weapons on their trains to keep organized gangs of criminals that must number in the hundreds from attacking their container freight trains in California damaging and stealing thousands of packages. Maybe electrifying the containers that the gangs are targeting would do the trick.

Fedex should install a laser-based-delivery-system on their trucks to avoid miss deliveries of packages. Might avoid the mass dumping of packages in ravines in Alabama.

Don't get too impressed with the "laser-based" stuff. This is not magical red death rays shooting missiles out of the sky. The lasers will be infrared lasers (invisible) and will appear to these missiles' guidance system to be a very hot spot (which puts out a lot of heat, which is infrared light) and will cause the missile to track on that. In some cases, they just force the missile to guide on a wing tip...which is VERY small, and even if hit, the damage is minimal, but the chances of a miss are far higher if the missile guides on that rather than on an engine exhaust heat....which is the usual target.

Next they'll want them on their delivery trucks to protect them from all the irate customers who get crushed packages (me), or who's packages sit in a distribution center for 6 days (me), or drivers that can't stay on your gravel driveway and have to run through soft grass (me)... If I have a choice when ordering anything, I always ask to NOT use FedEx...which should be named FedUp...

Prince Andrew would 'shout and scream' if his teddy bear collection was knocked out of place by palace maids, a former royalty protection officer has claimed. Former bodyguard Paul Page made the revelation during an interview with Ranvir Singh for the upcoming ITV documentary, Ghislaine, Prince Andrew and the Paedophile. The former constable, who left the Metropolitan Police in 2007, was part of the elite Royal Protection Squad and had access to the Duke of York's private residence. He claimed that Andrew had a bed with '50 or 60' stuffed toys and maids were given a laminated picture so each bear could carefully be put back in its original position.

Just hours before an apparently innocent woman was pushed onto the subway tracks by a convicted felon, a group of protesters at a nearby Olive Garden were arrested for refusing to show proof of a COVID vaccine. Videos posted to social media showed a group of about half a dozen protesters staging a sit-in at the Times Square Olive Garden on Friday night to protest New York City's vaccine mandate for indoor dining. The protesters reportedly remained inside the Olive Garden for two hours and refused to leave, which prompted the restaurant—which usually stays open until midnight—to close early, according to FOX News.

Germany is now ‘dramatically behind’ its CO2 emissions target shortly after it abandoned half of its remaining nuclear plants, calling the tech ‘dangerous’. Germany’s Climate Minister, Robert Habeck has said that Germany is “dramatically behind” its emissions targets for 2030, just weeks after the country abandoned half of its remaining nuclear power plants. Habeck now says that the country has a “gigantic task” ahead should it still wish to achieve its goal of making itself climate neutral. According to a report by Euronews, a sudden surge in the country’s emissions is in part a result of the nation’s decision to abandon nuclear power by the end of 2022.

Election officials in the Texas county that includes the state capital, Austin, have rejected about half of applications for mail-in ballots, following new voting restrictions brought in by Republicans. The voter identification rules have led to the rejection of about half of the 700 mail-in ballots requested in Travis county for primary elections in March, according to the county’s clerk. The denied ballots in Travis county follow a similar trend across Texas, with officials in Harris county, which includes the city of Houston, and Bexar county, which includes San Antonio, also turning down a substantial number of mail-in ballot applications.

Portland, Ore.—In 2021 Portland, Oregon, recorded 90 homicides amid a surge in gun violence, shattering the city's previous high of 66 set more than three decades ago. The number of homicides in Portland surpassed more populous cities including San Francisco and Boston—and were more than double the number of slayings last year in its larger Pacific Northwest neighbor Seattle. City police and officials say last year's increase—which disproportionally impacted Portland's Black community—was fueled by gang-related arguments, drug deals gone array and disputes among people living on the streets and exacerbated by the pandemic, economic hardships and mental health crises.
