Training is important. Nothing about this encounter, as described shows that the "defender" had any sort of a clue or a plan. Getting into a wrestling match and THEN pulling the gun, and fumbling it. Have a holster. Practice, practice, practice your draw, including clearing whatever clothing may be covering the weapon. LOTS of practice. And do NOT get close and into a "clinch". A gun is a standoff weapon. You don't want the bad guy to be close to you, if at all possible. So many really, really bad choices, and it ended in disaster. A laundry list of "don't do"s.

I was thinking the same thing #4. Why did this person get into a wrestling match if he had a gun? Step back, pull the gun, then confront the perp.

Fox left out half of the story. The full picture is that the government bodies we fund through our tax dollars are so utterly worthless that regular people are forced to rub elbows with known violent criminals. FTA: "Court records in Minnesota show that Edwards has a long and often violent criminal history. He's been convicted five times for violating no-contact orders, four times for domestic assault, twice for a weapons offense, and once each for forgery, fleeing police, disorderly conduct, terroristic threats, assault and drunken driving." https://www.startribune.com/charges-alleged-shoplifter-at-st-paul-liquor-store-fatally-shoots-patron-during-confrontation/600132518/

He didn't know what he was doing. A gun should not be drawn unless deadly force is to be used, immediately. This wasn't an armed robbery, but an idiot swiping some booze.
