Steal any property or deal any drugs this year? Well, the IRS wants it reported as taxable income.
The Internal Revenue Service is reminding Americans that they must report all of their hard-earned income to be taxed, even if it is the result of criminal activity, according to the bureau’s updated Publication 17 for the 2021 tax season, which offers general guidelines for filing taxes.
“If you steal property, you must report its fair market value in your income in the year you steal it unless you return it to its rightful owner in the same year,” the IRS told sticky-fingered Americans.

You mean the Internal Revenue Code isn’t one of those white supremacist laws that can be violated at will? Like speed limits!!
Defund the government! Why should just the police be defunded?

A specific exemption: Art sales, under specific circumstances (ie, the seller's last name is Biden).

Perhaps the FAA should remind those piloting the airplanes full of drugs from the south into the USA that they will be in big trouble if they are found not to possess a valid pilot certificate.
Our federal government does not live in the same world as do real Americans.

Can you imagine one of these IRS nerdy types knocking on a drug dealer’s door, demanding to see receipts for coke and heroin sales? Right.

They could probably catch a few advertising their looted goods on eBay, but those would be members of the protected class, so the IRS won't bother. BTW, did Sharpton ever pay back the millions he owed to the government?

If you return the property in a subsequent year, can you file an amended return? Do you need to get a receipt from the victim? What happens if they steal and total a car? Is that still income? Can they deduct a casualty loss? The lives of thieves is becoming far more complex.

Was that a subtle warning to the smash 'n grabbers? Will the value of stolen Gucci bags be based on wholesale value, retail value or what they actually got selling them in a back alley? Asking for a friend.

IRS ain't stupid. This is how they caught Al Capone - he didn't declare his ill-gotten gains.
It's a wonderful Catch-22. Don't declare, and the IRS comes after you. Declare, and regular law enforcement has evidence against you.
Decisions, decisions. What is a criminal to do?

Asking drug dealers and thieves to report their ill-gotten income is a little like asking politicians to report their true positions for the next election.

They don't have enough Agents to enforce tax laws on LEGAL income, much less going after ILLEGAL types.
The "Flat Tax" needs to be implemented now more than ever.
