An online body positivity group have created cards for patients who do not want to be weighed by their doctors unless absolutely necessary.
The 'Don't Weigh Me Cards', created by More-Love.org, ask doctors not to weigh patients every time they come in for an appointment because it 'stresses them out' and it 'perpetuates weight stigma'.(Snip)On the back of the cards is a list of reasons why being weighed is not always necessary, including 'Most health conditions can be addressed without knowing my weight', and 'I pursue healthy behaviors regardless of my weight status'.Artist Dani Donovan, from Omaha, Nebraska, took to Twitter to reveal that her local doctor's office had provided

When asked to go on a scale, just say no. An explanation is not needed. The doctor works for you. Getting weighed is your choice. Nurses/ PA's are not used to people they don't do as they are told.

Weighing is not used for "fat-shaming" as such. The docs are also looking for unexplained weight loss which can indicate serious illnesses like cancer. I assume that the ones who would use these cards are the ones packing on the lard and don't want their weight mentioned.

Yeah, heaven forbid that the doctor should tell them that they're overweight and need to stop eating so dang much. Why shouldn't they also stop taking blood pressure, blood sugar, and every other test to determine health risk. Stop doing mammograms and checking stool for blood as well.

Good grief!

Groups like this have blood on their hands!!!
Obesity leads to so many health problems, suffering, and early death, in far too many people. Strokes and massive heart attacks happen daily, and most often to those people who are over-weight and don't take care of themselves. For doctors to worry about people's "feelings" rather than to try to help them be healthier (which, for many of us, means losing weight) is a serious dereliction of duty.
I have wonderful doctors, who are all very blunt, which is exactly what I asked them to do when I first met them. If I start to gain weight (which is way too easy since I'm in my 60's now) or don't exercise regularly, they let me know that (because of my family history and genetics) I am risking terrible health problems and premature death.
If you are worried about getting your feelings hurt, go see a psychotherapist. But if you are concerned about your health, go see a doctor and listen to him/her when they warn you about weight and exercise!!! That scale that these morons hate is a tool (like blood tests or bloop pressure monitors) that doctors use to monitor your health. When they ask you to get on the scale, do it and own what it shows!!! It may save your life!!!

It never occurred to me to say no, #2. Something to look forward to if I ever return to the hallowed halls of medicine.

We sure have raised a bunch of weenies in the past 2 generations. Are these the Kens & Karens that are going to round up the unbelievers and haul us to the gulags? An army of wusses led by a dementia addled leader. This should be fun.

"Let us begin by setting aside the facts..." Many dosing instructions are tied to body weight. It's a data point for a doctor, just like blood pressure, pulse, blood oxygen, blood panel, etc. Sure if you want to withhold data from your doctor, go ahead if it makes you feel better emotionally. But eventually you may end up feeling a lot worse physically. I get it, I struggle with weight too.

To #4: not only weight loss but weight gain (significant changes in either direction are note-worthy) & a patients' weight is also necessary to determine correct dosages of medications, should they be warranted.
To # 11: LOLOLOLOL!!! Too funny!!
All that being said, JUDGEMENTALISM is not good in any relationship, including the one between a doctor & patient. That has a tendency to make some patients shut down, & without honest communication treatment is can be haphazard & useless.

They need a group for this? I am embarrassed to admit that I was anorexic in my late teens and early 20's, it was pretty bad. To avoid getting freaked out again, as unlikely as that might be, I always ask them not to TELL me how much I weigh . This has worked flawlessly, no group, no card.

Getting weighed in a physician's office is next to useless; I step on the scale with my clothes on, shoes on, coat on, wallet and phone etc. in my pocket, and so forth. They really do not know what I weigh. If they wanted to know, you would STRIP before getting weighed.

I suspect the purpose is to see a trend in your weight over the years.
Most should that don't want to be weighed likely have morbidly obese already written in their records.

The biggest "weight stigma" is the serious health problems that it causes. Life is all about choices. Choose to eat too much and not exercise enough.....fine by me, no years off of my life. But it is years off of your life.
But, it's your choice.

I have fought my weight for most of my life and about 12 years ago finally found a system which works well and keeps both my weight and inherited high cholesterol at bay. Part of the system is weighing myself first thing every single morning. I went to the same doctor for so long that I just told him how much I weighed that morning and so was not asked to get on the scales.
#23 is correct but I notice that there are no PSAs on the radio telling people to lose weight if they want to protect themselves from severe cases of covid. God forbid that we should ask people to quit being gluttons and get off their arses and move.

Overweight people know that they are overweight! they just don't want to be reminded about it. It all comes back to the current trend of not being responsible for things. How could you be so judgmental by weighing me!

I'm not surprised that activists created these cards but I am surprised a doctor's office actually uses them.
