Spielberg’s Politically Correct “West
Side Story” Flops With Audiences

Call it Woke Side Story. Because there’s woke, really woke, über woke, and then there’s this: not including subtitles for a movie’s Spanish dialogue because you don’t want to give “English the power over the Spanish.” That’s exactly what director Steven Spielberg did, and why, in his recently released West Side Story (WSS), a “remake” of the iconic 1961 film of the same name. Spielberg says, however, that it’s not a remake but a “reimagining.” But no matter one’s imagination, it’s hard to conceive of the flick’s debut this past weekend as anything but a flop — and expensive one, too.

Comments:

Another story on West Side remake bombing. Maybe we're finally moving on from woke.

I'm sure it will play well in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico! It might make enough to pay for the film canisters, maybe not.

It’ll end up in Netflix by January, no later than February. It should have been a straight-to-video movie. Afterwards, it goes to our government schools for anti-white CRT classes.

I’m looking forward to a remake, excuse me, reimagining of “Dirty Harry,” titled of course “Woke Harriet” in which transgender Inspector Harriet Callahan (pronouns Fu, Fu, Fu), played by Alec Baldwin in his first career-reclamation film, fights racism starting in the very first scene by drawing Fu .44magnum “the most powerful handgun in the world” and blowing the “head clean off” Fu white partner and then over the course of the movie, shoots all the white and Asian police, and in the big production number in the end, Fu is pursued by a gang of LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC Antifa in a Bullitt-like chase through the streets of San Francisco in a self-driving electric vehicle Fu has to stop twice to recharge, slips on a pile of feces on the sidewalk in the Tenderloin and is taken to SF General where they refuse to give Fu medical care because Fu is unvaccinated and Fu dies of COVID; the dialogue will be completely in Cambodian and Sanskrit.

If Spielberg truly wanted to learn about Hispanic gang conflict with white or any other gangs, why didn't he talk to: gang members? There are plenty of Hispanic (Latinjx) gang members in Los Angeles and New York he could have spoken to. To be full woke, MS-13 could have been hired as consultants.

I guess the Spanish speaking population isn't enough to make the film profitable, or maybe Spielberg made this movie to reduce his taxes. His tax burden may be higher than the amount of money it took to make this film. So, by making a film that loses money, he can write off his losses and pay fewer taxes.

When they show this movie in Spanish speaking countries, do they (1) dub the English dialogue with Spanish actors, (2) use Spanish subtitles, or (3) show the same version without dubbing or subtitles so that they do not give Spanish the power over the English? I am willing to bet that it is not #3.

Seriously, this Karen complaining is nonsensical. How many WWII movies have you seen where the Nazis would speak German to each other without subtitles? The moments in Spielberg's West Side Story of the Puerto Rican's speaking Spanish to each other are brief, and if you have an IQ over room temperature you get the gist of what they are saying. One character even says "speak Engluish! We have to practice!" Good grief this is an artistic choice that works.

It's already scheduled to be on HBO Max in about a month. What was Spielberg thinking in not including subtitles for Spanish? The vast majority of Americans do not speak Spanish. Will he include English subtitles when it is released in Puerto Rico?

#20, Spielberg said he didn't include subtitles because this is supposedly a bilingual country. He didn't say it was an "aristic choice." And for the record, I can't remember any movie I have seen where the foreign language part isn't subtitled. The Italian parts were subtitled in The Godfather. I doubt if the new West Side Story is more "artistic" than Coppola's masterpiece.

I think MSM trying to make the excuse Americans just won’t go see a musical are wrong. Audiences absolutely would still go to a musical with the production quality, casting magic and gorgeous melodies of say, The Sound of Music. One retired Broadway producer was quoted on FNC saying the problem they way overestimated the popularity of West Side Story. I agree with him. He said sixty years later, families still watch The Sound of Music, The King and I, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma and a few others as a holiday tradition. He said he has never heard WSS put in that category with audiences.

America's Civil War, which raged from 1861 to 1865, was by far the bloodiest conflict in our history. Original estimates put the death toll at about 620,000, including some 360,000 Union and 260,000 Confederate dead. More recent estimates of the carnage are even higher: 750,000 to 850,000. The Battle of Antietam on Sept. 17, 1862, at Sharpsburg, Maryland, still ranks as the bloodiest day in U.S. history, with nearly 23,000 casualties on both sides, including 3,675 killed in action.
