Dozens of restaurants and businesses across New York City are closing their doors ahead of the Christmas holiday after the Big Apple became the epicenter of the latest Covid-19 wave fueled by the Omicron variant. Following SantaCon celebrations during the weekend, the city logged a record 21,908 cases—a slight increase over the previous record of 21,027 cases reported the day before—and in response, a host of eateries have closed. At least 50 restaurants have closed across New York City's five boroughs, including Boilermaker in Manhattan's Lower East Side, whose Sippin' Santa annual holiday pop-up cocktail bar is a seasonal favorite. Comments:

The shots don't work so well that in one of the most vaxxtastic cities in the world, where you can't work at or enter a restaurant without being fully vaxxed, they're back at square one "amid the pandemic." This is a clear-cut case for more federal aid (plus 10% for you know who) en route to collapsing the national economy for good, and ushering in something "better."

President Joe Biden's chief medical advisor says White House officials are mulling shortening the 10-day isolation window for fully-vaccinated people infected with COVID-19. Reducing the timeframe is 'being discussed,' particularly in the context of healthcare workers, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Wednesday, hours after England reduced its quarantine from 10 days to seven. 'If you get a healthcare worker who's infected and without any symptoms at all, you don't want to keep that person out of work too very long, particularly if you get a run on hospital beds and the need for healthcare personal,' Fauci told CNN's New Day.

The US Army is developing a vaccine to fight all variants of COVID-19, including Omicron and Delta—as well as all prior coronaviruses and strains not yet identified. Scientists at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research expect to announce the one-stop shot in just weeks after nearly two years of research that began with the DNA sequencing of the COVID-19 virus in early 2020, Defense One reported late Tuesday. Infectious disease specialists at the Department of Defense’s largest biomedical research facility completed animal trials earlier this year with its spike ferritin nanoparticle vaccine, or SpFN, with positive results, according to the report.

Accra–A brawl broke out on the floor of Ghana’s parliament late on Monday as lawmakers debated a proposed tax on electronic transactions that has divided the house for weeks. The 1.75% e-levy, which would include taxes on mobile money payments, has been fiercely opposed by the opposition since it was first proposed last month, and held up the passing of the national budget. Members of parliament rushed the front of the chamber after Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu suggested the tax be debated and voted upon under a hastened ‘urgency’ procedure. Some threw punches and grappled while others restrained their colleagues.

A group promoting LGBTQ clergy in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has suspended its first transgender bishop over allegations of “racist words and actions” involving the bishop’s church area and the “Latinx community” in Stockton, California. Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries said its board decided Dec. 16 “to suspend” Bishop Megan Rohrer’s membership “in the ELM Proclaim community and events.” The Proclaim program is, ELM says, “the professional community for Lutheran ministers and candidates, who publicly identify as queer.” Bishop Rohrer was installed three months ago as leader of the church’s Sierra Pacific Synod. ELM said Bishop Rohrer exhibited “an existing pattern of behavior” that doesn’t fit with its goal

Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic—and 11 months and a day since he took office—President Biden insisted, “I don’t think anybody anticipated” the dramatic surge in the more infectious Omicron variant amid criticism of his response as lagging. “It all started all of a sudden,” Biden claimed Tuesday when pressed by reporters on his administration’s sluggish response to nationwide coronavirus testing shortages. But moments later, Biden contradicted that claim, saying he did foresee the looming test shortage and that he had been working on a still-vague plan to distribute 500 million rapid tests to Americans by mail. “I knew that was coming,” he followed up

President Biden said Tuesday he will purchase half a billion rapid coronavirus tests that Americans can order for free delivery to their homes, deploy the military to overwhelmed hospitals and stand up federal testing sites as he scrambles to rein in an omicron variant that’s become dominant and exhausting Americans who wanted a relaxing Christmas. Mr. Biden said several testing sites would debut in New York City before the holiday but the website offering at-home tests won’t be available until January, as Americans find bare pharmacy shelves ahead of holiday gatherings. “Bottom line is it’s a lot better than it was,” Mr. Biden said, later dismissing the idea he failed

The other day, in an interview with NBC News, Hillary Clinton went public with a warning -- or was it a dog whistle to Democrats and the left? It might be an instance of Hillary’s mouth running ahead of her brain, but don’t count on it. Hillary is a coldly calculating woman -- and that might be one of her better qualities. Hillary suggested that if Trump or “someone of his ilk” is elected president in 2024, then American democracy is kaput. Foolishness? Knowing the conceits and delusions that infect her intended audience, her suggestion might not seem ludicrous.
