CHICAGO — More than a year after the vaccine was rolled out, new cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. have soared to their highest level on record at over 265,000 per day on average, a surge driven largely by the highly contagious omicron variant. New cases per day have more than doubled over the past two weeks, eclipsing the old mark of 250,000, set in mid-January, according to data kept by Johns Hopkins University. The fast-spreading mutant version of the virus has cast a pall over Christmas and New Year’s, forcing communities to scale back or call off their festivities

Amy Schneider made history on the popular daytime game show “Jeopardy!” that aired on Tuesday, winning for the 20th time and tying the record for most wins by a woman. The only other woman to do so was Julia Collins, who previously set the record in 2014. (Snip) She’s previously said that she didn’t want to make her appearances on the show "too much about being trans" but she is "proud" to be a trans woman. "The fact is, I don’t actually think about being trans all that often, and so when appearing on national television, I wanted to represent

NEW JERSEY -- New Jersey Senator Cory Booker has tested positive for COVID, he said on Sunday. In a statement, Booker said he first started feeling symptoms on Saturday, and his symptoms are relatively mild. The statement reads, "I learned today that I tested positive for COVID-19 after first feeling symptoms on Saturday. Fortunately, my symptoms are relatively mild. I'm beyond grateful to have received two doses of vaccine and, more recently, a booster -- I'm certain that without them I would be doing much worse. I encourage everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated and boosted."

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., announced Sunday that she has tested positive for COVID-19. Warren, who said she is vaccinated against the virus, shared that she tested positive for a "breakthrough case" on Sunday after testing negative earlier in the week as she is subjected to regular testing. "Thankfully, I am only experiencing mild symptoms and am grateful for the protection provided against serious illness that comes from being vaccinated and boosted," she said. Massachusetts is reporting a daily average of 5,126 new COVID-19 cases and 74% of its population is fully vaccinated, while Washington D.C., a daily average of 360

ATLANTA — Johnny Isakson, an affable Georgia Republican politician who rose from the ranks of the state Legislature to become a U.S. senator, has died. He was 76. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp’s office confirmed the death in a news release Sunday. Isakson, whose real estate business made him a millionaire, spent more than three decades in Georgia political life. In the Senate, he was known as an effective, behind-the-scenes consensus builder. His own views on flashpoint issues such as abortion became more conservative over the years as Georgia’s own politics shifted from blue to red. In 2015, Isakson disclosed that

CNN is closing its offices to nonessential workers in a return to early pandemic shutdown measures, the cable station announced Saturday. Only employees who must work onsite will be allowed in US offices and must be masked up, CNN President Jeff Zucker said in a memo to workers. “We are doing this out of an abundance of caution,” Zucker said in the memo, which was shared with Reuters. “And it will also protect those who will be in the office by minimizing the number of people who are there.” The move comes as coronavirus cases soar in the US and

California police are investigating an attempted robbery at a Macy’s in San Jose after at least six male suspects entered the store and assaulted a female employee. Police say between six and eight suspects entered the Macy's at the Westfield Oakridge Mall at about 6 p.m. local time Saturday. (Snip) The detainment of the pair set off criticisms from some witnesses who say police were too rough with them when they arrived on scene. Sen. Joe Manchin, a conservative Democrat, said Sunday he won’t support the Biden administration’s “Build Back Better” plan. The decision could potentially shutter the $1.75 trillion social spending and climate policy bill. “If I can’t go home and explain it to the people West Virginia, I can’t vote for it. And I cannot vote to continue with this piece of legislation. I just can’t. I’ve tried everything humanly possible. I can’t get there,” Manchin said on “Fox News Sunday.” A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A fire ripped through a distribution center in North Carolina for the QVC home-shopping television network early Saturday, causing extensive damage to the facility, officials said. More than 300 employees were working at the facility near Rocky Mount when the fire was reported shortly after 2 a.m., The News & Observer reported. No injuries were immediately reported.
QVC representatives reported that all employees safely evacuated the warehouse and were accounted for except for one who hadn’t contacted family yet, according to Edgecombe County Manager Eric Evans. Earlier Saturday, Evans had said all of the center’s employees

SAN FRANCISCO—On Wednesday, San Francisco Mayor London Breed made a fiery speech in response to recent increases in thefts and drug sales and use in the city, particularly in the Tenderloin, a notoriously gritty stretch residents say has had similar issues for decades. (Snip) The tough talk represented a stark reversal for Breed, who, shortly after the murder of George Floyd last year, stripped $120 million from the San Francisco Police Department to fund initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Black residents. In the days since, her statements have drawn praise from some residents and business owners in

New York state, hit hard in the earliest wave of the coronavirus pandemic, has now tallied a record number of COVID cases in a single day. The state reported Friday that over 21,000 people tested positive the previous day, the highest single-day total since testing was widespread. The total tops the previous record of just under 20,000 on Jan. 14, 2021. Cases are also spiking in New York City, the epicenter of the nation's first coronavirus wave. On Saturday, the city reported over 5,000 new cases and over 200 new hospitalizations, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Twitter. City data

VATICAN CITY -The Vatican on Saturday warned conservative Roman Catholics who have balked at Pope Francis' decision to restrict the old traditionalist Latin Mass that they were sowing division and engaging in "sterile polemics". The Vatican department overseeing sacraments and liturgy issued a directive in response to bishops' requests for clarification following a document in July in which Francis overturned decisions by his two predecessors and tightened access to the Mass. Since July some conservatives, including bishops, have openly defied the pope, resulting in the latest chapter of what some have dubbed the Church's "liturgy wars". Religious conservatives in the
