Horseshoe crabs have been around for 450 million years, surviving mass extinctions and several ice ages, but conservationists say the creatures could soon go extinct because their bright blue blood is vital to pharmaceutical companies.
The blue blood has immune cells, known as Limulus polyphemus (LAL), which are sensitive to toxic bacteria and can be used to test vaccines and drugs for dangerous bacterial toxins before products hit the market.
The coveted blood has been used for nearly 20 years and has been vital tool in testing the coronavirus vaccines currently on the market. Scientists drain the horseshoe crabs of their blood and return them to the ocean,

For some reason horseshoe crabs are plentiful in Joe-Joe's Delaware. They smell awful and are not edible. Using them for medical testing is probably the fist time in history anyone has found a use for them.

As a kid growing up around long island, walking in the shallows these things always terrified me. Nothing like standing on a rock barefoot and feeling it move.

Horseshoe crabs are an entirely unique species. ALL other species on planet Earth use iron, as hemoglobin, to capture and transport oxygen in blood. Horseshoe crabs use copper, rather than iron, and they have hemocyanin....which makes their blood a blue green color.
VERY unique and different creatures. It would be a shame to wipe them out as the sole representative of this approach to life.

Horseshoe crabs have been around for 450 million years and will still be around long after Biden, Fauci, and COVID hysteria are gone.

Chillax! Horseshoe crabs and roaches aka palmetto bugs are prehistoric animals. They were here long before we were, by a couple of creation days. Maybe they will somehow morph into those armor-bearing locusts of the end times.

Major correction to this article - Insert "communist conservationists" instead of just plain conservationists.

I suggest someone do a actual count before we all panic. Also protect their breeding grounds (beaches). What I find shocking is not one mention of global warming.

I've spent much of the last 10 years on the Delaware Bay where the horseshoe crabs come in to lay their eggs in late May, early June. 10 years ago we would go down to the beach after high tide and literally thousands upon thousands of them would be crawling across the sand, digging in and laying their eggs. There isn't enough space to explain the incredible process of migrating birds feeding on them. Google it, it's fascinating. However, in the last few years the numbers have decreased noticeably.
My daughter and I have made it our mission to educate the little monsters that think its fun to pick them up by their tails (which will actually kill them, if they break off they can't maneuver), and to teach them to flip them over when they get stuck on their backs, before they die. It chills me to think that Fauci and his ilk (big pharma ghouls) might be harvesting them. In the past scientists y have extracted the blood and returned them to the bay. This bunch doesn't seem like their concern extends beyond the almighty $$$.

You have to read further to find
"While the US horseshoe crab is not currently endangered - they are near threatened - data shows up to 30 percent of the crabs harvested for their blood die when returned to the ocean."
and
" The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission estimates short-term bleeding-induced mortality to be 15 percent"

I am wondering if those that have bad reactions are reacting to the shellfish in the jab. SMH
OP, that is hilarious, and right on the target sadly.

I hunted around for about fifteen minutes on the world wide interweb, and could not find any information about total numbers of these creatures. That tells me the data is faulty and designed to prevent me from making my own decisions!

This sounds like something that Doctor Anthony "Beagles" Fauci would come up with. There are synthetic alternatives, but this is probably cheaper, which means it's good.
