The leading candidate to be the city’s next top cop was passed over after balking at the idea of not answering directly to incoming Mayor Eric Adams, The Post has learned. Former Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best was the odds-on favorite to replace outgoing NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea until she voiced concerns that Adams might create a new job for a deputy mayor to oversee the department, law enforcement sources said Wednesday. Instead of picking Best, Adams chose Nassau County Chief of Detective Keechant Sewell, whose selection was exclusively revealed Tuesday by The Post.(Snip)Sources have said that Adams is considering appointing controversial ex-cop Philip Banks

A new study has found that Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine produced virtually no antibody response to the Omicron variant.
South African virologist Penny Moore found that a key measure of antibody levels fell fell from 303 against the original strain to undetectable levels against Omicron in those with the J&J shot, according to Bloomberg. Among those who received the Pfizer shot, the antibody measure, called geometric mean titers, fell from 1,419 against the original coronavirus strain to 80 against Omicron.(Snip)'The new Omicron variant highlights the importance of continued surveillance, testing and vaccination to prevent hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19,' J&J executive Mathai Mammen said.

Princeton University has joined Cornell in moving its final exams online after reporting a surge of dozens of COVID cases—up from zero on Sunday—that it says are likely driven by the highly-contagious Omicron variant. In just two days, the campus reported a combined 39 new cases of COVID among students. University data indicated that 20 students tested positive for the virus on Tuesday, and 19 others had tested positive on Monday.(Snip)Princeton—which boasts a 99 percent vaccination rate for undergrad students—is also mandating booster shots as it attempts to curb the spread of the seemingly unstoppable variant.

A recent survey finds that 67% of vaccinated Americans believe the unvaccinated should pay a “COVID tax” to cover businesses’ pandemic safety expenses, but most business owners and the unvaccinated themselves don’t believe in such fees. Skynova, an invoicing software for small businesses, conducted the digital survey of 1,075 Americans. The firm’s project manager, Joe Mercurio, said the survey reflects a “consensus among people … that unvaccinated people should have to pay precautionary COVID-19 fees when visiting a business” to help cover the costs of personal protective equipment and other materials.(Snip)Higher prices for unvaccinated consumers would amount to “a new tax” to help business owners cover the $132

Washington—President Biden smirked and walked away Wednesday when The Post asked why he hasn’t done more to push China to be transparent on the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden was stone-faced when asked about his own responsibility for the US crossing 800,000 pandemic deaths—before breaking into a broad grin when asked about China. “On 800,000 coronavirus deaths, do you have a statement on your responsibility, and why haven’t you asked China to do more to be transparent on the [virus] origins?”(Snip)Biden, departing to tour tornado damage in Kentucky, gave no answer as he smiled and waved off the question.

An aspiring model who recently moved from her native Thailand to pursue her dreams in the Big Apple said she is 'lucky to be alive' after a brutal beating in the subway by a deranged mugger last month. In an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com, Bew Jirajariyawetch, 23, said the horrific 4 am attack after she was coming home from a concert is still a blur when she was grabbed from behind in a chokehold, thrown to the ground, punched in the face and robbed of her purse at the 34th Street Herald Square station on November 22.(Snip)'There were so many police officers at the subway after the attack

The cooling sensation of an alcohol swab on your upper bicep is a cue for what’s about to come next: the injection of a needle that delivers a dose of vaccine. More than 69% of Americans have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and as a bandage is applied to your arm, you are part of the club. Whether you’re getting your first shot, a second dose or a booster, you’re likely to experience some side effects. They may be inconvenient, and they certainly can be uncomfortable. But immunologists and virologists say they are to be expected. And you might even welcome them.

Homeland Security has ditched an interview requirement for spouses and children of refugees who want to come to the U.S. as a package deal, saying it was taking too long to complete the cases without much benefit from the extra work. The move is the latest deletion of a Trump-era security policy. The Biden team said requiring interviews was “inconsistent” with President Biden’s executive orders calling for a more inclusive immigration system. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the government’s legal immigration agency, said it can still do interviews on a case-by-case basis, but only when “there is a need to do so.”

U.S. passenger railroad Amtrak says it will temporarily suspend a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for employees and now no longer expects to be forced to cut some service in January. In a memo to workers on Tuesday, Amtrak said it would allow employees who were not vaccinated to get tested on a weekly basis instead, citing litigation over President Joe Biden's vaccine mandate. Currently, fewer than 500 active Amtrak employees are not in compliance, and 97.3 percent of the service's workers have gotten at least one shot, Amtrak CEO Bill Flynn said in the memo. Last, week the railroad told Congress it anticipated 'proactively needing to temporarily reduce some train

A suburban police officer and five Queens residents were charged Tuesday with luring underage Mexican girls to New York and forcing them into prostitution, with the corrupt cop accused of accepting sex from the victims as payment for his work as a law enforcement mole. The long-running operation, dating back almost 20 years, involved a pair of Queens-based schemes: the Ced-Hernandez sex trafficking organization brought the young women to New York with false promises of a better life, authorities charged in a 14-count Brooklyn Federal Court indictment. The Godinez prostitution operation then drove the victims to meet with clients including Wayne Peiffer, a Village of Brewster police

Had this been a White man who killed six black people, they'd say he was fueled by the hateful rhetoric of Donald Trump and by malignant White supremacy.
