Aspen conservative voted “Mr. Aspen”

For seven years, I was the conservative columnist for the Aspen Times. Democrats outnumber Republicans three to one in Aspen and about twenty to one at the newspaper, where I was the one. Despite the liberal leanings of the Aspen Times and its readers, my conservative column became the most-read thing in the newspaper. It often garnered more clicks than front page news and, I suspect, even the real estate ads for $4,000/sq ft condos. But I evidently wasn’t hired to be a conservative success. Rather, I was hired to be a conservative token. On Christmas Eve in 2019 after savoring the clicks I had generated for seven years, they fired me

Yay, Glenn Beaton! One of the best Conservative columnists around. You really showed those silly Libs. Keep up your excellent Beat. /s/A Fan

I have enjoyed reading Beaton since his days at the Aspen Times and continue to follow him. This is great for him and must give the Aspen Times some 2nd thoughts. I hope the new owner of the Times makes for a more readable newspaper!

I suppose the Aspen Times was not making a lot of money the past year, so they are selling out. It would be nice to know how much they lost after dumping Beaton Christmas Eve 2019.

Beaton's one of my favorites. I voted for him for Mr. Aspen; but couldn't vote for him to repeat as best columnist, because they didn't list him as an option, and there wasn't a write-in option.

Hopefully the new owners will let the whole staff go. Well, maybe not the composing room and delivery guys but all the editorial people. Typical leftists...the simply cannot abide a different opinion. This is the left..they rage with vitriolic hate against anyone who even simply disagrees with their politics. It’s really strange and more than a little unnerving. I am sure there are a few on the right like that but the venom the left spew against even a slight disagreement is strange and there is something psychotic about the depth of their hate.

The Supreme Court will probably uphold

The Supreme Court this week heard oral argument on the Mississippi law that limits abortion after 15 weeks from conception. As someone who practiced law at the Supreme Court, I listened to the arguments. I think they’ll uphold the Mississippi law. I have a few observations. Keep in mind that oral argument at the Supreme Court is typically more theater than jurisprudence. The Justices usually already have their minds made up from reading the briefs. But it’s worthwhile theater because it connects the public to the judicial process. Also, it gives some insight into the likely decision which won’t come till next Spring.
Colorado plans to cancel "sex offender"
because it offends sex offenders

Some 20,000 sex criminals in Colorado get “treatment” from the state Sex Offender Management Board, or “SOMB.” It’s a big bureaucracy with layers of committees and “work groups.” Rapists treated by the SOMB are of course not called “rapists.” In fact, that term appears nowhere on the big SOMB website. It was banned years ago because it became associated with criminals who coercively, forcibly and sometimes violently prey sexually upon others – persons who commit what we used to call “rape.” Stated another way, the term “rapist” came to connote persons who rape.

Kyle Rittenhouse shot three people. The first two died. It’s interesting to see who they were. The backgrounds of these guys is not determinative of Rittenhouse’s guilt or innocence – there’s no open season on creeps – but it’s relevant in piecing together the story of that deadly night. The first who was shot served 14 years in prison for raping a child and then for dozens of in-prison disciplinary violations. He was a registered sex offender and was found guilty of assault, arson and narcotics crimes. He was wanted at the time of the shooting for bail-jumping and domestic abuse, and had been released from a hospital
"Woke" is now a term of mockery, and the
left has only itself to blame

“Woke” was coined by the left some years ago to describe a person who had become sensitive to the left’s pet issues, especially racial and “social justice” ones. It implied that a person disagreeing with the left about those issues was not just wrong, but unconscious. This catchy term was initially successful. But the left never succeeds at success. That’s because what’s important to them is not being successful in resolving grievances, but parading those grievances as evidence of their victimhood. Victim status is more important to the left than winning – and easier too.

The ACLU sued the United States for money on behalf of illegal immigrants for being separated from their children when they were caught and detained at the border. The Wall Street Journal reported a few weeks ago that the Department of Justice was considering settling the case for about $450,000 per individual – a settlement amounting to over a million dollars in the case of a family of three and over two million for a family of five. The basis for the ACLU’s lawsuit on behalf of the immigrants is not clear.

Traffic accidents illustrate the phenomenon. It was widely assumed that traffic deaths would decline during the pandemic because fewer miles were being driven. But the opposite happened. Miles driven did predictably decline in 2020 compared to 2019 – by about 13% — but traffic deaths spiked upward 7% compared to 2019. The story in 2021 is even worse. Traffic deaths in 2021 are running about 18% higher than 2020 even though miles driven are up only 13% over that one-year period. These grim figures correlate with declining use of seatbelts, more drunk driving and more speeding. COVID effectively suspended the rules of the road. That’s not all.

Kamala Harris told us before this week’s election that, “What happens in Virginia will in large part determine what happens in 2022, 2024 and on.” OK, let’s run with that. Joe Biden won Virginia by 10 points in 2020. This week, his surrogate in the governor’s race for whom he, Harris and other Dem poobahs personally campaigned lost by two. That’s a 12-point swing. I applied that 12-point swing to the 2020 midterm elections for the House of Representatives to get a feel for the 2022 elections. In other words, to graft this week’s result onto the 2022 midterms, I subtracted

Joe Biden visited the Pope. Politicians do this. The meetings are of course carefully scripted so that nothing controversial occurs, such as the Pope reminding the visitor that according to Church doctrine and scientific opinion a fetus is a living creature and the species is homo sapiens. It’s not really a meeting; it’s a show. The president tries not to say something stupid while the Pope intimidates him with his Pope getup complete with the lamp shade hat. This show is traditionally broadcast live. Just a few days before this one, however, the White House announced that it would not be. Because reasons. Unspecified ones.

Like most standup comedians, Chappelle is at his best when he lampoons the accepted wisdom – when he illustrates with a humorous reductio ad absurdum that such wisdom can only be laughable foolishness. He does this particularly well in the topic that has gotten him into lucrative hot water – transsexuals. He wittily observes that you don’t get to

The words “motherhood” and “mother” are now cancelled. The proper woke term is now “birthing person.” That’s because “mother” means a woman who has birthed a child, and allegedly we now also have men who birth a child. Never mind that these “men” have no Y chromosome and were born female with female genitalia and female chromosomes. They are now “men” because, well, because they say so. According to their science – which you’d damn well better follow — whatever they say they are, they are. To contend that science says anything different is hateful and unscientific because it hurts their feelings. Then there’s the flag of the United States of America.

President Biden has signed a series of executive orders to make the federal government carbon neutral. The Democrat president on Wednesday ordered federal agencies to purchase electric vehicles, harness wind, solar, and nuclear energy to power facilities, and to use sustainable building materials. The goal is for the federal government to stop adding carbon dioxide to the atmosphere by 2050. In the next decade, Biden wants the government to cease purchasing electricity produced from sources that emit carbon dioxide. By 2035, the administration wants all new federal cars and truck purchases to be zero-emissions. Right now, only about 1.5% of the government fleet is electric vehicles.

In the conversation, she admitted being first lady was a 'little harder' than she expected, expressed optimism at what her husband can do in a highly-charged political environment of Washington, and dismissed recent polls showing Americans have questions about the president's mental fitness.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Forget speeding tickets — California truck drivers will soon have to watch out for pollution tickets. State regulators on Thursday voted to crack down on heavy duty trucks weighing more than 14,000 pounds (6,350 kilograms) — those big semi-trailers that make up just 3% of all vehicles in California but spend so much time on the road they account for more than half of all pollution from cars and trucks each year. New rules will require these big trucks, including ones from other states passing through Califonria — to be tested at least four times per year to make sure they

Vice President Kamala Harris told reporters that Friday's Supreme Court ruling leaving in place a Texas abortion law was 'an attempt to undo 50 years of precedent.' The court ruled Friday that a lawsuit by abortion providers in Texas can move forward but left the ban on abortions after about six weeks in place as challenges are being litigated. The high court punted the law's legality. Its action today sends the case by abortion providers back to a district court, which could lead to it being suspended.

The Democrats aren’t even pretending anymore that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris like each other. Each sees the other as an enemy, although neither can do without the other. (snip) I saw the video showing the little teen-queen drama that Biden and Harris enacted at Dole’s memorial service. Then, more agitated, he whispered again to her—at which point Biden and the missus changed sides so that Biden didn’t have to stand next to his Vice President.

The US inflation rate has hit its highest level in nearly 40 years, adding woes for consumers and compounding the issue as a political liability for President Joe Biden. The consumer price index rose 0.8 percent last month after surging 0.9 percent in October, the Labor Department said on Friday. It pushed annual inflation to 6.8 percent in November, the highest increase since June 1982 and well above October's 6.2 percent annual rate. A labor shortage is boosting wages, sending costs higher for businesses, and chaos in the supply chain is showing little sign of easing, indicating that high inflation could persist well into 2022.

On Wednesday, the Cathedral of the Rockies near downtown Boise finished replacing a stained-glass windowpane that the church felt was racist and non-inclusive. “To any African American in our community, when they see Robert E. Lee, they’re not feeling warm and welcomed,” said the church’s lead pastor Duane Anders. The Methodist church, which sits on 11th St. in Boise’s North End, was built in 1960. At the time, a giant stained-glass window was installed that mainly depicts early Christian leaders, except for a panel at the top. The upper panel features George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Robert E. Lee standing shoulder to shoulder.
