Some of California's largest school districts are trying an unconventional tactic to help students re-engage in school after distance learning and boost their chances of acceptance into the state's public colleges: by dropping D and F grades. Los Angeles Unified [snip] and other districts are phasing out grades below a C for high school students. The idea is to encourage students to learn the course material and not be derailed by a low grade that could potentially disqualify them from admission to the University of California and California State University.

Smart move...because Oakland students only know their alphabet up to C anyway.

Because they didn't want EVERYONE to have a D or an F. So now everyone gets a "C".....which is identical in value to an "F".

We raised an entire generation of kids presenting sports trophies like candies, even for non-athletes, because their morale would be harmed by competition!! The end result- many of those are expecting similar treatment, protesting XYZ causes and whatever else they can come up with. Can anyone predict how this A-C grading will end?

How do they expect these kids to get ahead? I am sure there are some smart kids who will be tarred with this and won't have a chance competing in the real world.

Just give everyone an 'A'. Don't want to hurt their egos, and it makes everyone equal. Besides, the old grading method was nothing more than a white supremacist plot anyway.

Nothing to do with any of that.
When a student quits high school, the school gets fewer tax dollars because enrollment is down.
This is a pure cash grab, nothing more.
A student who can't get straight A grades in high school will flunk out of a UC school if they can even get in which none of these straight C flunk outs will anyway. Entry to the UC system has been very competitive for decades and even straight As doesn't guarantee entry to the system.

So what do they think will happen when these kids wise up and realize they have been screwed? Most of the time, nothing gets easier in life, especially when it comes to competing in the real world.

It sounds sooooo compassionate -- having no student fail there.
Too bad for Oaklanders, "nobody fails" means nobody succeeds, either.

The rest of the world will just begin to discount credibility of degrees from those institutions. Reality will win out in the end. When a college applicant from California applies the only way he can get into a good school will be if he is a gifted athlete. For a job applicant it might just be that a community college associate degree from somewhere in the rest of the country is more impressive than a college bachelor degree from a school in California.

As long as they don't hold back the kids who've mastered certain skills and instruction, nor pass those who've not yet done so. I like to idea of competency-based advancement.

To determine 'competency' they must set standards.
Why pretend - set pass or fail and pass everyone.
Sorry, that's what they are planning.
No SAT or ACT standards to get into the Cal system of Universities needed anymore so lets eliminate High School standards.
Next will be the 'first come, first served' approach to hiring by employers. No standards needed.
Thank you Liberal neighbor for this recipe for the failure of the USA.

I hope college sports teams also drop anything that could potentially disqualify a recruit since there is no need to get the best and win anymore.

How does no concern about D’s or F’s encourage students to learn the course work. Learn nothing, you’re still going to pass with a C at worst. Then we can have uneducated idiots who didn’t learn a darn thing getting into college on phony grade averages that they didn’t earn. We’re raising a nation of entitled morons. And rewarding laziness.

I would say that that is not going to prepare them for the "real world" at all.
But then I noticed that it was Oakland. So the best that most of them can hope for is to be a drug dealer, welfare slave, or "baby momma" anyway -- I guess really passing or failing doesn't really matter much...

My German dad had no use for “D’s” or F’s,” either. In our home, an “A” was expected, a “B” was barely tolerated, and a “C” equaled failure, or worse yet, laziness.

Wow, with Oakland Unified eliminating "D" and "F," I had to write my grandsons a whole new alphabet song which I call "Da Woke ABCs Song" which uses the same old tune and goes like this: "A, B, C, E, G, H, I. . .J, K, L, M, N, O, P and Y. . .throw in Q, R, S, T, V. . .U and W, X and Z. . .wit my new woke ABC. . .all da bros be proud of me."

Promoted and promulgated by Teachers that barely made C averages in College, were certified anyway.
Since achievement no longer matters, lets do away with Teachers having to achieve a certificate, just sign up ANYONE willing to teach, let them use their own methods...then see which classes do best. Adopt those methods to replace the Dewey System of Industrial Education Factories which have led to this current systemic abject failure.

Stupid is as stupid does. When you're a freakin illiterate you don't need a D or an F to prove it, all you need to do is open your mouth. Just look at the NFL or the NBA. Drafted out of college and they can't put two coherent sentences together. No wonder this country is lost. Nothing more than a breeding ground for democratic votes. Got it...........

So, if your son working two jobs, at McDonalds and high school student, has a 2.95 GPA (almost a B) and a worthless gangbanger is given a 2.0 GPA, the UC and CSU schools are supposed to treat them the same? This is stupidity beyond my level of understanding.

How about all the people who favor California's policies go live there. They can make up their own laws; create their own businesses; have their own schools; change their name to Venezuelia; collect their own taxes; fight their own wars; have their own prisons, and on and on and on. And they will live happily ever after. But once there, they have to stay there forever.

I was stationed in Oakland in the early 90's and the high school aged youths weren't too bright then. This latest move will just mask the stupidity of today's generation of CA Bay Area teenaged knuckleheads.
