A home invasion event is terrifying. Some of my relatives experienced a very violent home invasion recently. Thankfully, they were lucky and were able to defend themselves. But, it could have been much more tragic.
A home invasion is often very sudden. There is no way to know for sure if there are multiple intruders. You also don’t know their intentions. But, you do know one thing… they just committed a felony… which means they probably don’t have inhibitions about committing another felony. And they probably don’t want any witnesses to their crime. You must assume the worst… that they are there with violent intent.
This is America. LoL, the homeowner should have given the burglar a verbal command, showed him where all the goodies are, invited him inside for dinner, and allowed him to spend the night in the guest room. Yeah right. On a serious note, because someone is running from you doesn't mean they don't pose any threat. The dude can draw turn around and start clapping. This idea that because he was running away that means he is not a threat will get you killed and I would be here to talk about it.

I live in Texas so maybe I am biased. But stealing a man's horse was (and maybe still is) a hanging offense. A man's car is not just property but how he works to support himself and his family. I think this was reasonable force. Why should someone have to wait to see a gun or be shot at to defend himself?

One less car thief in the USA is a good thing.

Last time I checked, the driveway is part of the homeowner's property. I don't get it - these individuals are probably the same people who want the police defunded. I guess we all are supposed to be doormats and let criminals have the power?

no one deserves to be robbed. Even if his wallet is in his car. It's his. taking it is stealing. against the laws of God and man.Now if one wants to say the car should have been locked, or that the owner should use a little common sense on how he take care of his property, oh wait.. He did!

So, a habitual thief gets caught thieving and receives retribution. People need to mind their own business. I will never be shot by a homeowner because I will not attempt to steal what is not mine. Maybe more of these poor thieves could learn this lesson?

Because the homeowner fired at the thief as the thief fled, in most jurisdictions they could be prosecuted. The video and the article does not give me enough information to feel that he should be prosecuted (nor enough to oppose it). If his neighbors wanted him prosecuted for reckless endangerment for risking having his second or third shot hit one of them (or their children) I would be OK with that. To me, the third shot looks like it was filed wildly.

I believe Summerlin is in Las Vegas, and is a fairly upscale area. I noticed while reading the article, that the writer stated the family was uploading items from their car. I don't recall ever uploading anything from my car. I've unloaded items from my car, but I've never uploaded anything from my car.

Several years ago, my son's friend, Rich, was visiting his friends who lived in a row house area of Philly. After dark, Rich went out in the public alley to get something from is car. It's very dark in the alleys. He was trying to find his car. A man down the street, with an outside camera, saw someone approach his car (in the public alley). Rich was shot in the back and killed.
The man is serving 30 years.
Rich left behind 2 young children.

FTA: The homeowner told 8 News off-camera that he and his wife had just finished unloading groceries from their car when a man got in through the garage door, which was open.
He says the suspect stole his wallet and his phone from his car where he also had his gun. The homeowner’s wife was inside when he says the man was coming towards him with his hand in his pocket, so he reached for his gun and fired two rounds.
Castle doctrine, IMHO.
BTW.. it seems as if the thief got clean away. No corpse. Cops don't seem to have been able to follow a blood trail... so maybe he was just scared off. Why call a homeowner a murderer when there was no murder?

In Texas we have the Castle Law...anyone that comes on our property and does anything, ANYTHING illegal, gets SHOT...and survivors will be buried on the back 40!

How many "readers" saw "shot at" and missed the "at"? Even some comments here seem to think the homeowner killed the would-be burglar. smh

Seems to me the author would waste valuable time before grabbing his gun. Only takes a few seconds for an intruder to find you and your family.
Castle Doctrine!

The current crop of Leftists right now in the media, have been brainwashed from the earliest age that there is no such thing as personal responsibility, that if bad things happen to you no matter how nasty you are being, it is the other guy's fault. So we are seeing CNN and all those other network talking heads whinging against the homeowner for defending his own property and not letting a thuggish little perp damage it.
I have no problems with folks defending what is theirs. It is called the Castle Doctrine, just so we don't forget. Now if the perp is running away from the scene, I don't call back shooting self defense. That is why they sell doorbell cameras, and why every homeowner should have something like it.

Sorry CNN I don't feel sorry for the thief he could have had a gun himself... Simple rule, the best way to avoid being shot is not putting yourself in situations where you might get shot.
