LOS ANGELES — Customers at Los Angeles restaurants will only get plastic utensils and napkins if they ask for them, under a new ordinance taking effect Monday that aims to reduce waste. The rule requires all restaurants with more than 26 employees to remove all single-use plastic utensil dispensers, the Los Angeles Times reported. Businesses must also stop including plastic utensils and napkins with takeout orders or for dine-in meals unless a customer specifically asks for them. Enforcement won’t begin until January. Over 32,000 mailers were sent out earlier this year to update restaurants on the new rules. The letters

SAN FRANCISCO — Sticker shock at San Francisco Bay Area gas pumps was beginning to reach panic levels early Monday as prices surged to more than $4.85 a gallon, setting a new record for the state for a second day in a row. Prices were pushing $5 in some areas, including in Humboldt County, where the average price was $4.97 Monday. (Snip) Rep. Karen Bass, appearing Sunday on CNN’s Jake Tapper “State of the Union,” said something needs to be done to hold down the prices. “The median price is $4. And in many places, it’s $5,” Bass said. “I

Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.), the longest-serving Democrat in the Senate, on Monday announced he will retire at the end of his term next year. Leahy, 81, who was first elected in 1974, would have been up for reelection to a ninth term in 2022. “It’s time to put down the gavel. It is time to pass the torch to the next Vermonter to carry on this work for our great state. It’s time to come home,” Leahy said at a news conference Monday at the Vermont State House in Montpelier from the same room where he announced his first

Worn out by what they see as entrenched dysfunction and lack of focus, key West Wing aides have largely thrown up their hands at Vice President Kamala Harris and her staff -- deciding there simply isn't time to deal with them right now, especially at a moment when President Joe Biden faces quickly multiplying legislative and political concerns. The exasperation runs both ways. Interviews with nearly three dozen former and current Harris aides, administration officials, Democratic operatives, donors and outside advisers -- who spoke extensively to CNN -- reveal a complex reality inside the White House. Many in the vice president's circle fume

MSNBC host Tiffany Cross characterized the truck driving industry as populated by "a lot of white men" who she says "overwhelmingly voted for" former President Donald Trump. Cross, who is the author of Say It Louder! Black Voters, said Sunday on Cross Connection that she is worried because her brother is a truck driver . She said it "feels like a dangerous industry." Cross questioned her guest, CrossCountry Truck Driving School owner and president Pamela Day, about how the industry can become more "welcoming" to drivers of color. "This is an industry populated by a lot of white men over the

PARIS —Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg started his week in the White House press briefing room promoting a crown jewel of President Biden’s legislative agenda — a landmark public works package that recently passed with bipartisan support. He explained how the legislation would benefit communities of color, where he found little support when he ran for president. Later, the former mayor touted the plan at the COP26 climate summit in Scotland, enjoying a global spotlight. And he posed for photos with former president Barack Obama, smiling as the popular ex-president rested a hand rested on Buttigieg’s shoulder. At the same time

The mood was somber in the ballroom at Hilton Hasbrouck Heights. More than 200 Democrats had gathered the night of the election in expectation of landslide party victories across the board. Instead, they watched the unthinkable happen as results rolled in and county Democratic candidates were losing in every race. (Snip) So the turnaround was stunning when, shortly before midnight, a group of candidates emerged from the elevator with Commissioner Chairman Steven Tanelli leading the way, smiling brightly and shaking hands. Declaring themselves winners, they took to the stage, jubilant. Even then, the numbers on the Bergen County clerk’s website

Wisconsin Judge Bruce Schroeder took some criticism Thursday after requesting during the Kyle Rittenhouse murder trial in Kenosha that attendees applaud for the nation’s service members on Veterans Day. During a moment in the day’s proceedings, Schroeder asked if any veterans were present in the courtroom. Only John Black, a use-of-force expert who was later called to the witness stand by the defense, claimed to have served in the military, identifying himself as an Army veteran, The Associated Press reported. "I think we give a round of applause to the people who’ve served our country," Schroeder then said, drawing a

The judge presiding over the homicide trial of Kyle Rittenhouse confused observers after making a strange and off-color joke inside the courtroom on Thursday. "I hope the Asian food isn't coming.. isn't on one of those boats from Long Beach Harbor," said Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge Bruce Schroeder as the court was preparing to take a lunch break. (Snip) "It harms our community and puts us in the crosshairs of micro aggressions as well as actual physical violence," said John Yang, president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-AAJC. Yang said it's clear the judge doesn't have cultural

As Vermont reports higher than ever COVID-19 case rates, state health officials have been trying to understand why. How can a state that did so well during the first part of the pandemic — even garnering national recognition — be doing so much worse now? "There is not one simple answer," said Vermont Health Commissioner Dr. Mark Levine during a news conference Tuesday. "But, there are clearly factors that have come together to create the situation that we're in now." Slowing the spread is critical right now to prevent Vermont's hospitals from being overwhelmed with people sick with the virus, Levine said.
