This year has seen the largest increase ever in the number of concealed handgun permit holders—more than two million, for a total of 21.52 million. That is a 48 percent increase since 2016. On Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court heard the case of NYSRPA v. Bruen, which has a chance to further increase this total and make permitting rules more similar across states. Six states now have more than 1 million permit holders: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Florida is the first state to have more than 2.5 million permits.

Justice Breyer’s comments are a classic case of projection, a psychological malady common among liberals. Breyer thinks otherwise sane, normal people will go to football games, get drunk, and pull their guns out and start shooting because.... that’s what he’s afraid HE would do!

John Lott has been researching this topic for decades, has become quite an expert on the numbers. I had an opportunity to spend a few hours discussing his book "More Guns, Less Crime" not long after it came out, one on one. He's an interesting, low key, very intelligent man, who didn't start out caring or knowing much about guns, was not a gun owner. He assigned grad students in an economics class to investigate a gun control topic mathematically, statistically just one of many topics he assigned as training for research. He was so viciously attacked for his student's research results that he was genuinely surprised and thought that anything which provoked such vicious personal attacks and hate, not attacks on methodology, was worth looking into some more. He's always worth reading when you run across his byline.

Oops, hit return too soon. How is a high dollar cost to exercise one of our specific constitutional rights legal? Poll taxes were used to keep the poor from voting and were found to be unconstitutional. How is that high cost of a CCW permit any different?

Although I cannot speak for other states' policies on where guns are legal--or not legal--to carry, Justice Breyer's point is moot in Florida--and the second time he says it, it's silly-- because even legal permit holders cannot carry a gun into any sporting event or convention with a paid gate (the only exception is a gun show). At every Tampa Bay Rays game I've ever attended, every person with a ticket had to pass through a metal detector. At entrances no gun is allowed to pass through. Only the police are armed at sporting events. That's probably a wise policy. Permit holders must leave theirs at home or hidden in the truck. Lott is considered one of the few true authorities on gun related issues. Two of his books are in my library.

Re #9, somebody is getting permits in Maryland. According to an online site, Maryland has over 27,000 active CCW permits. https://www.gunstocarry.com/concealed-carry-statistics/#numbers Probably payoffs to various judges, sheriffs, etc. by wealthy folks to get permits approved that 'Joe average citizen' isn't going to get or afford. Last I read, you handed $10K to the 'proper' law firm in NYC and you could get a concealed weapons carry permit. The law firm greased the right palms and made it happen.

When Kansas was working on getting our first CCW permit system approved, the anti-gun crowds made these same lame claims. "People will be shooting each other over parking spaces." "Any minor issue will end up in gunfire." When I asked lawmakers to ask if they thought that Kansans were more violent than people in the 25 other states that had shall issue for many years, some said, "Well, you never can tell". We had dual sponsors of the bill, a senior female Democrat legislator and a senior female Republican legislator. I became friends with both of them over the period of developing, writing and passing the bill. While waiting to testify before a legislative subcommittee, I sat down in the waiting area with a Kansas state trooper in full uniform. I asked if he would be testifying, and we discussed the situation. He had been assigned by the head of the KS Highway Patrol to 'check into how this concealed carry laws have worked out in other states'. The trooper told me that he had contacted the Highway Patrol heads in Florida and several other states and each had unequivocally stated "It was no problem at all, you will find that there are no problems with legal concealed carry permit holders." He reported that, and this was a significant factor, I believe, in getting the law passed in the legislature. And the legislature had to override the veto of a rotten Democrat governor at that time, Kathleen Sebelius, who went on to be a rotten Obama stooge in DC, too.

If you are a confirmed Marxist wanting to destroy Western civilization you want (among many other things) to disarm your enemy to eliminate any resistance. Even taking away one gun or one bullet is a win for the Marxists.

Leah has covered this New Jersey race extensively. It’s a state senate seat so it doesn’t get much attention but if you live in the Garden State, this is a huge upset. This is the New York Giants beating the Patriots in Super Bowl 42. New Jersey Senate President Stephen Sweeney appears to have been beaten by a no-name Republican Edward Durr, who spent less than $100 to beat Sweeney. I’m deducting the $67 he spent at Dunkin’ Donuts. I’ve lived in New Jersey for most of my life. Sweeney owns South Jersey. He’s the labor union's top guy there.

Reading the recent column by fellow Blue State Conservative contributor John Eidson got me to thinking about educational experiences of my own. It’s always a good column when it makes one think. Reading it, there was a vivid memory of when I was working at a regional campus of The Ohio State University as an academic advisor. I met with a just-admitted young black woman from Cleveland, OH. I was looking forward to meeting her after having reviewed her high school transcript. It was all A’s and B’s with other indicators of academic excellence. In a Senate floor speech delivered on Monday, the Iowa Republican explained how Garland made an “extraordinary” admission that he “instructed the FBI to get involved with local school boards” and doesn’t have any plans of rescinding his memo directing that action.

Virginia’s gubernatorial race is seen as a national bellwether. With the most recent polls showing Republican Glenn Youngkin, a former underdog, tied with his Democrat rival Terry McAuliffe, the outcome of the Nov. 2, 2021 election seems sure to rest on the smallest of margins. The more important trend for Americans to consider, however, lies not in the tight election, nor even in the party affiliation of the eventual victor, but on efforts by local election officials to violate state law to profit their preferred candidate.

Yes, we’ve heard all about Joe Biden’s alleged vaccine mandate for private companies employing 100 or more people. It was all over the news even before he announced it on September 9. His announcement has jeopardized the employment of millions of Americans and increased worker shortages in critical domains such as health care. There’s only one problem. It’s all a mirage. Biden’s so-called vaccine mandate doesn’t exist — at least, not yet. So far, all we have is his press conference and other such made-for-media huff-puffing.

Congress is requiring in its $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill that automakers install monitoring systems in their cars to stop drivers from operating their vehicles while intoxicated. The bipartisan package, which is on its way to the president's desk after passing the House on Friday, allocates around $17 billion for the road safety programs. Monitoring systems to stop drunk drivers would roll out in all new vehicles as early as 2026, according to the new legislation. First, however, the Transportation Department would have to assess what the best form of technology is and give automakers ample time to comply.
