ALBANY, N.Y. — New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed new legislation that prohibits used car dealers from selling vehicles at retail without a working airbag across the state Sunday. Under this legislation, dealers must certify that the vehicle is equipped with an airbag, as well as an indicator light that shows the airbag is functioning. This bill is entitled “Anthony Amoros’ Law” after a young man from Rockland who died in a car crash after a car was sold to him without airbags. “Every New Yorker deserves to be safe on the road and behind the wheel,” Gov. Hochul said.

That’s going to make it tough to sell any classic cars in NY.

More absurd regs from liberal in their ivory towers issuing mandates without any consideration for real folks. i guess the desperately poor up in Jefferson County and other similar areas wont be able to get to the local store anymore. Maybe they can walk or ride bikes when its -20F... or ride on horseback. Are bikes and horses required to have airbags ?

Someone's getting a kick back from either air bag manufacturers, sellers or installers, or is getting kick backs from new car dealers who want to eliminate some competition.. This is kind of a mini "cash for clunkers". Get ready for used NY cars showing up on used car lots in other states.

Anthony Amoros died in 2013 at age 18, after crashing his recently purchased used car on a windy stretch of Thiells Mount Ivy Road. His family said Amoros had no idea the airbag had been removed.
Sounds like Anthony crashed all by himself and the parents blamed the car.
Question: Was Anthony wearing a seat belt?

What about cars made before airbags were mandated? What about wearing a seat belt? They are a lot cheaper and won’t get you killed in a minor fender bender

NASCAR and even Indy Racers lack airbags! They do have Belt systems for 200mph crashes! Good luck selling your 1969 Roadrunner with a 440 ci 4bbl carb, Hurst shifter, headers and NO AIRBAGS!

Instead of banning the sale of cars without working airbags, how about just requiring the disclosure of whether there are operational airbags to prospective buyers? Or would that unjustly limit the government's power to oppress?

Folks... I think the intent here is pretty simple. If a used car dealer sells a car that was originally equipped with airbags, those airbags must be in working order when sold.
Frankly, I have no problem with that. Airbags are a safety requirement. Selling a car with NON-working airbags IS a problem.
It would be better if the law required the dealer to specifically inform the buyer that the airbags do or do not work IMO, but this conservative sees nothing wrong with requiring a significant safety feature to be in working order before selling a used car.
I doubt seriously this has anything to do with 1968 Camaros or a 57 Chevy.

Gov Hochul should personally test each car to ensure they're in working oider by substituting for the crash test dummy & juicing the accelerator to 100 mph.

Insurance companies will tell you that repairing an airbag system often costs more than the value of the car. Many shops refuse to touch them because of liability incurred should the car be involved in a crash. This is nothing more than NY's Cash for Clunkers program which took millions of good, less expensive cars off the road.

Years ago I remember receiving literature from a company in Kentucky regarding plastic "replica" airbag covers made from semi-rigid plastic to replace airbags that had opened in a collision. It would give the impression that the car had full. working airbags and save rebuilder shops thousands by not having to buy expensive air bag components. That lasted less than a uear before getting shut down.
I have a feeling this new regulation in New York has more to do with used cars being sold as having functioning safety systems but have compromised systems to cut costs.

Airbags are not always so great. This is just another way to make cars unaffordable and unavailable to poor folks

This New York state statute applies only to vehicles required to have air bags as mandated by Part 571.208 of title 49 of the code of federal regulations.

I was also thinking that might be a problem for anyone trying to sell classic cars in New York, then I realized they probably use enough salt on the roads there to have destroyed all the classic cars by now. Those air bags are actually of only a little benefit if you always use your seat belts.

Sounds great - - except airbags have a limited life span. Replacing and testing them on a older car is usually cost prohibitive. Used car dealers' lots are undoubtedly full of older cars that are suddenly unsellable.
