The armorer on the set of "Rust" offered a chilling theory through her attorneys about what led to the accidental shooting death of Halyna Hutchins.
Armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed was one of four people who handled the weapon prior to Alec Baldwin firing it while rehearsing a scene for the indie-western. As a result, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said that the investigation is largely focused on her as well as how a live round made its way to the set of the film at all.

Agree. The attorney is using the only defense available....deliberate sabotage by a disgruntled crew member. It’s possible but I lean toward incompetence by at least three people...especially the one who pulled the trigger.

Was it sabotage? Quite likely, how else does a real bullet end up on the set and loaded into a prop weapon?
But, so what? Baldwin still pulled the trigger, violated all safety rules, killed a woman and injured a man. He's executive producer. The buck stops there.
If Baldwin had checked the ape on himself, or not pointed it directly at someone, or not pulled the trigger, or hired someone experienced to handle weapons on set, or any of several other things, that woman would be alive today and this story never would've happened.

It wouldn't be entirely surprising. Union folks can do some really nasty stuff when crossed.
When I lived in WVA in the mid 70s, as a slightly naive young man, I was really surprised when during a coal
mine strike that the strikers shot live ammo at the drivers who still drove, bullet holes in the windshields right at the driver's positions....while occupied. They really WERE trying to kill the folks who continued to work when told not to. I was never much in favor of unions after that BS. They can be very bad folks.

The crew had walked off the set before this incident. I would like to think Baldwin was clueless about the live ammunition but he does have a temper. Either way, purely accidental or not, he aimed and he fired. He killed her. End of story.

The biggest question should be why is there an actual functional firearm used on the movie set instead of a prop gun ? That would negate all possibility of someone sabotaging with live ammunition.
During the initial news reports I read that the presence of working firearms on the set was because the film crew wanted to shoot recreationally nearby.
If this is true then someone created a perfect storm for this tragedy to happen. And asked the producer Baldwin has to be ultimately responsible for the lax environment and also for his unsafe gun handling.
(My 2 cents as a former range officer at a skeet club.)

Sounds like an old Perry Mason television show...

The guilt still lies squarely with Baldwin... There is NO excuse for pointing a gun at someone unless you mean to shoot them. Guns aren't toys. Guns aren't meant to be playful laser pointers. Guns are dangerous in the hands of children and child like adults.

Here’s an idea, honey. When not in use, put firearms in a locked weapons rack, then sabotage is greatly reduced.

The safety protocols were not followed. That is what happened. Period. I blame Baldwin. After how many movies in his career where he used firearms he did not follow the simple basic rules of gun safety. Ad to the fact the gun was a single action revolver which he had to manually c—ck before it would fire this adds up to at least Negligent Homicide.

The woke Baldwin who is so outspoken against guns was producing a movie for entertainment using guns. He deserves some jail time for being so careless with a "play" gun. As I've said before, children have been suspended from school for drawing a gun or biting a pop tart into the shape of a gun. Baldwin is guilty of manslaughter or is that person slaughter.

The 'sabotage' if it happened, wouldn't have worked if they followed the long standing safety rules.
Sabotage or not, its still Baldwin's responsibilty as the person holding the gun to have 1. Not confirmed it was safe and 2. Pointed it toward living targets and pulled the trigger.
Legally and morally, it is Alec Baldwin's fault.

The possibility of sabotage is a reason. among others, why firearms used as props must be inspected immediately before use as a prop by the actor.
he Armorer (Hannah), Assistant Director Halls, and Baldwan can be charged with involuntary manslaughted under New Mexico law. Punishable up to 18 months imprisonment and a $5,000 fine.
In the movie industry "Prop-gun" refers to any gun, real or fake, that is being used as a prop. It includes guns that can fire bullets.

could it be that someone on that set didn't like that totally unlikeable baldwin and wanted to put him in the middle of something he couldn't weasel out of?

#7, that's actually a fairly uninformed premise of the question. In order to look real and convincingly fire blanks, real guns are used. "Prop guns" are typically hard rubber, no moving parts, used to throw or drop, etc, as the scene requires.
In the HUGE history of western movies and dozens of TV series with literally thousands of episodes where huge numbers of guns were "fired" for motion pictures and TV, there were NO deaths injuries that I am aware of. But then, those actors actually knew a good bit about guns. In fact, many of the TV and movie stars of the 50s and 60s became serious competitors in western "quick draw" compettions, which normally used wax bullets or blanks, and had timed draw contests.
Today's ignorant and lazy folks running and working in Hollyweird has apparently lowered the bar a good bit,
and there are now few on set who have the slightest clue about safety.

My take so far has been that the armorer was a greenhorn not up to the job. Now her mouthpiece is flailing for any theory that will divert from her failings.

The FACTS of this case are not up for debate:
1) Who took possession of a firearm without immediately checking to see if it had ammunition in it? Baldwin.
2) Who pointed a firearm at another human being? Baldwin.
3) Who pulled the trigger of the firearm when it was pointed at a human being? Baldwin.
Basic fundamental gun safety guidelines were not followed by Baldwin, and he demonstrated that he should have never had a firearm in his hand due to his ignorance of firearm safety, and by not giving that firearm the proper respect it was due as a lethal instrument, was THE PERSON responsible for the death of a human being.

I get what they are trying to do here, but in the end it changes nothing. The ultimate responsibility to have made sure the weapon was safe falls upon each person that handled it. That still means Armorer Barbie, the AD, and Baldwin himself, who cked the hammer and pulled the trigger while pointing the weapon at people. Get yourself a better lawyer, honey. You are going to need it.
