The Mayo Clinic is developing a breakthrough blood test that can detect more than 50 different types of cancer across all stages. The test, known as Galleri, was created in partnership with Menlo Park, California-based biotechnology and pharmaceutical company Grail. (Snip) Currently, recommended cancer screenings in the U.S. only cover five different types of cancer and can only screen for one type at a time. According to Grail, 71% of cancer deaths are caused by cancers that are not commonly screened for. Galleri, which is not covered by insurance, costs $949 and must be ordered by a licensed health care provider, such as a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant.

Comments:

I hope the test is as successful as they say it is.

You would think insurance providers will be all over this considering how crippling expensive cancer treatment is, especially the longer it goes undetected. If this really works, it could be a game changer.

Sure hope this works out. And I hope one of the cancers it can detect early is pancreatic cancer. My SIL died from this last year. It takes so long for it to be detected by the time it's found, it's too late. The survival rate is usually 4-5 months.

This is good news. J&J also has a blood test CellSearch for diagnosing several cancers. Unfortunately Health Technology Agencies, insurance companies, NICE and CMS Medicare limit testing so it can only be used for checking that therapy works or checking for recurrence of cancer. Our healthcare, whether private or government, is controlled by a bunch is actuaries and bureaucrats. We need to unleash scientist from these roadblocks.

RE #6: I hope so, too. My brother passed in October 2020 from pancreatic cancer, and my sister, former poster vttwinmom, has stage 4 metastatic cancer traced back to a small malignancy that she had in the white of one eye more than ten years ago. We are praying that she lasts through the holidays at this point. After my brother was diagnosed, we all had genetic testing done to see if we had the cancer gene. My brother, sister and I all have it, but my two elder siblings do not. I am being extra careful and trying not to live my life in fear, but it is extremely difficult at this point and I am considering consulting an oncologist just to reassure myself. This test, if successful, could be a lifesaver in so many ways for so many people.

And how much will this blood test cost? Will the insurance companies pay for it? Will Medicare? I know Medicaid will because it already covers every little thing, including removal of hangnails.

Last week, the United Kingdom approved a new antiviral pill (molnupiravir). Studies show the drug reduces the risk of hospitalization and death among high-risk COVID patients by half. U.S. taxpayers funded molnupiravir’s development. Yet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration isn’t even meeting to consider approval until Nov. 30.
