A leading US conservation group, the Audubon Naturalist Society (ANS), has announced it will change its name, due to the “pain” caused by the 19th-century ornithologist and slaveholder John James Audubon. The group, which holds wildlife sanctuaries across Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland, said that it had become clear its name did not connect to its diverse set of programmes and that some members and volunteers had objected. “The mission and vision of the organisation have not changed,” said Lisa Alexander, executive director of ANS. “The deliberate and thoughtful decision to change our name is part of our ongoing commitment

Back in the day, before WHITES decided slavery was evil, and sought to eradicate it, EVERYONE, if they could, owned slaves. It was a symbol of status. They may have called them serfs in Normandy, or something else, locally everywhere else, but slavery was universal.
Unless John Audubon was a monstrous master, then he still deserves respect and honored for his contributions.

The fate of avians is, and should be of fundamental concern of all of us and doing everything we can to sustain the species which is under stress from a myriad of sources.
The ongoing focus of the "Audubon Naturalist Society (ANS)" to cater to the "ruling class", to submit to the "ruling class", to become, successfully, a prime propaganda mouth piece for the "ruling class", and now to re-write and downsize their own history into a mass of illiterate "woke" swill, is a clarion call to disassociate oneself from this organization immediately. Fellow pilgrims: Go and do likewise.
ANS: "Go Brandon".

The Audubon Society doesn't give a damn about birds. They endorse windmills and the carnage produced by windmills.
Just give them money is all they care about.

You are kidding me!!!! I live in Kentucky and we have an Audubon State Park with a museum devoted to him and his wildlife paintings. I've mentioned this before but it bears repeating. I'm a Catholic and not the Joe Biden/Nancy Pelosi kind. Back before the Civil War, there was a movement in American politics called the Know-Nothing movement. It was anti-immigration and and anti-Catholic. The Know-Nothings could be quite violent at times. In 1855 in Louisville Kentucky, a mob attacked Catholic neighborhoods, leaving twenty-two people dead, scores injured, and much property destroyed by fire. One of the nastiest of the Know-Nothings was a man named Samuel Morse who invented Morse Code. Do I want the name of it changed? Not at all. I am a grown-up and I know history is full of flawed and imperfect men and women. Some of these flawed people made great inventions or great art, like Morse and Audubon.

A little side story: When we lived in Florida we attended the First Baptist Church on Boca Grande. We went to lunch one day with one of the church ladies. Found out she worked in the home Mr. Audubon lived in, think his wife was still living then. House faced the bay and had a beautiful boat house. She asked if we would like to see the house since Mrs. A. was out of town. Of course we said yes. Inside were original paintings he had done over the years. Lady said curtains were never opened so sunlight wouldn't get to the paintings and destroy them. What a fantastic tour that was of their home.

What are the odds that anyone who claims to be offended (that a White person did something notable, versus the accomplishment of being bLACK) can explain what an ornithologist is, or indeed has even heard of anything remotely related to Audubon's work? Not that it matters; this is part of our Glorious Cultural Revolution.

Isn't it interesting what can be dredged up from the 1800s to persecute people in the 2021? Why are we putting today's values on yesterday's happenings? Not that today's values are worth a crap.

Anyone Audubon may have caused pain and/or harm to is long ago dead like Audubon himself. His legal actions, while not PC by today's standards, were completely culturally appropriate and acceptable during the time that he was alive. If we are to respect ALL CULTURES, we must also respect that cultures evolve over time and that had Audubon been alive today, he may well have been a flaming liberal Democrat fighting for minority and LGBTQ rights. Anyway, nobody seemed to have a problem up until now with Audubon when someone decided that anyone with any association with slavery in their past must be erased from history no matter how noteworthy their accomplishments were. In many cases, these people's accomplishments helped lead to the end of slavery.

I worked in that very state park as a teenager, #13, located in my hometown on the red banks of the Ohio River. Beautiful little park that's on the National Register of Historical Places.
One positive outcome of all this madness is that once everything that was ever named after any man who sinned gets renamed, it will be a lot easier to remember the names of things: Jesus State Park, Jesus Naturalist Society, First National Bank of Jesus . . . Jesus, D.C.

I'm not a fan of the Audubon Society anymore though not for the reasons stated in the article. I'm not a fan because this Elitist Liberal Group blamed President Trump for killing birds during his term in office. While they should look at the thousands of birds that are killed by the blades of Windmills trying to create wind energy.
Also, the price of bird seed has double under the Biden regime and I'm not happy about that.

What “woke” name is the National Audubon Society going to use?
The Redskin Society, or the Democrat Society?
Considering that the Democrats were the party of slavery, the Confederation, Jim Crow, segregation, and apartheid, that would be most fitting. Besides, those supporting wind power and bird-chomping windmills are usually Democrats, who spout “follow the science “ while violating it.
Maybe the National Hypocrite Society would be a fitting new name.

What a bunch of racist baloney. These people lay awake nights imagining ways to be "offended" by things that do NOT affect them, and happened centuries ago.
Since the sun shone on all those slaves in the fields, I think they should stop using solar power. Same for wind power....it blew on slaves a century or two back.
