NEW YORK — With computer-generated imagery, it seems the sky’s the limit in the magic Hollywood can produce: elaborate dystopian universes. Trips to outer space, for those neither astronauts nor billionaires. Immersive journeys to the future, or back to bygone eras. But as a shocked and saddened industry was reminded this week, many productions still use guns — real guns — when filming. And despite rules and regulations, people can get killed, as happened last week when Alec Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins after he was handed a weapon and told it was safe. The tragedy has led some

I read a sci-fi story years ago. All the theaters had gone to sophisticated robots for the actors. Something went wrong of course and a 'real' actor had to fill in for the bot. Good story.

Just because someone says it's safe you still need to check. Ronald Regan said, "Trust but verify". That stands for all situations in life.

Ban ban ban. Thats the communist's intellectually lazy answer to everything. The next step will be "Hollywood banned them in movies, so why cant we ban them in society?".
How about we just maintain the safety rules our dads taught us? If that actor had obeyed even one of them, nobody would have been hurt.

The gun didn’t decide to kill that woman. That was Alec Baldwin’s doing. I would, however, back a law that prevents any actor anywhere from touching a weapon on a movie set ever.

If Baldwin was a NRA member or a hunter this killing would have most likely never happened. A lot of these anti's hate the NRA and gun people so much that they don't even want to know anything about gun safety. And that goes children too. Remember when the anti's made a stink about the Eddie Eagle gun safety program suggested to taught in schools?

Why not just BAN LIBERALS from even getting near a gun, since they're the cause of 99% of all gun fatalities.

How many movies have been made over the past century, loaded with gun scenes and shooting, where no one got shot?? Thousands??
The problem, in this case, was the lack of a competent armorer, nothing more.
Baldwin, as producer of the movie, bears the legal responsibility for that.

Live ammunition was already banned from movie sets, but that didn't prevent this incident.
Nothing has been reported about how live ammunition was loaded into the gun that was handed to Baldwin.

Pick out a hundred random movies. How many have guns and gunfights, I don't know but I bet easily MOST of them. How many 'stars' of those movies are yelling BAN GUNS, I don't know but I bet most of them. These are the hypocrites influencing Chicago's kids and others. How about we ban fake guns in movies, not law abiding homes.

Re #8, sometimes there were effects in movies....breaking bottles while practicing, or shooting an object in the air, that were most easily done by an expert with live ammo.
Example: In the movie Winchester '73 with Jimmy Stewart, there was a scene of target shooting and then tossing a coin up to shoot it while flying through the air. The aerial shooting was done by an expert off to the side, as the actors pretended to fire at the coin. Real ammo, real expert shooter, on set.
I am sure that there are other examples.
But as a general rule, from what I have read, no live ammo is permitted on a movie or TV set. A competent armorer for the movie would have seen to that.
It is still possible that a foreign object was in the barrel, the gun not properly checked for objects in the barrel, and the blank propelled that foreign object like a bullet. A person hypothesis is a smaller caliber blank could have been the foreign object. The details are technical, and it is just a hypothesis.
We'll see what is finally decided after the investigation. Live ammo somehow on set or foreign object propelled by a blank? WAY too soon to tell.

Why was Alec Baldwin pointing a gun at a cinematographer and director and why was his finger on the trigger? Additionally, why didn't he check to see that the gun was loaded with a blank or empty. I presume the gun in question was a revolver. Checking a revolver is not hard.

Start with firearm training, then have fake firearms used for filming. There is absolutely no reason to have a real firearm being used in a movie, and no reason to have live rounds around a movie set.

God's people perish for lack of knowledge. Hosea 4: 6 (KJV)
In Hollyweird , Translation: when the going gets stupid, and the stupid get power over the lives of God's people.

Yes let the computers do it. They can render the actors perfectly so we don't have to have actual actors. Actors that use their fame to go out in public and make stupid statements. That would make the whole world a better place.
The computers can still use real guns though because computers can easily be programmed to understand gun safety as taught by the NRA. Whereas real actors are too dumb to grasp gun safety. (I've been watching the Norm McDonald skits on SNL for Celebrity Jeopardy that is based on actors being very stupid.)

1. There is no such thing as an unloaded gun.
2. Never point a gun at something unless you intend to destroy said thing.

Before I clean my .45 and put it in the safe, I eject the mag, lock the slide back and check the chamber.
When I take it out of the safe, even if it is the next day. I recheck the chamber with my finger.
Alec Baldwin would consider me paranoid. Unlike him, I have never had an AD, much less killed anyone.

There was so much negligence on the whole set. And who puts real bullets in prop guns?? Just don't use any real bullets on the set if you can't properly handle the things and people are willfully ignorant about gun safety. The guy who never looked at the gun handed it to Baldwin and said it was cold. Set up? Baldwin never checked for himself. He also pointed it at someone he wasn't planning to kill...or was he? A 24 year old armorer who barely got her first job (probably cuz daddy was a long-time armorer and Hollywood is all about cronyism and nepotism over competence). I think someone put the live round in there on purpose. Remember, it was a single shot revolver. Nothing happened by accident.

Exactly, #21. Every. Single. Time. Religiously. Anyone who cannot practice gun safety 100% of the time should sell them to someone that can. There is no room for carelessness when handling firearms. One lapse, one mistake, can be fatal.

A Computer-Generated replacement of Alec Baldwin would work far better. But I don't think we have the technology to alter Alec from a negligent, arrogant, violent, abusive, liberal jerk.

Col. Jeff Cooper taught four basic rules of gun safety. 1.) All guns are loaded (unless you have cleared the gun yourself). The moment you put the cleared gun down, assume it's loaded again. 2.) Never point the gun at anything you're not willing to destroy, including your arm or leg while drawing, or anyone or anything you don not want to shoot. Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction always. 3.) Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target, and you're ready to shoot. Your disciplined trigger finger is the best safety of all. 4.) Be certain of your target and anything beyond it that you don't want to shoot.
Alec Baldwin violated all four gun safety rules. We all know what happened. So unnecessary. If you religiously adhere to Col. Cooper's rules, you should never have an unintended or negligent discharge, and serious or fatal accidents will not happen. Screw around with firearms, and the worst can happen. Alec should have taken an NRA safety course, but he wouldn't want to be associated with this civil rights group of which he so strongly disapproves. Well, he's anti-gun and it shows. He's also stupid.

Banning guns is not the answer. The problem is the criminals, nut cases and idiots that pick up a gun, point it at somebody and pull the trigger. If all guns were eliminated, they would hit people with a club or stab them with a knife.
