Legislators want three counties to secede
Maryland for West Virginia

Original Article

State legislators in three conservative western Maryland counties are seeking permission to secede from the state to join neighboring West Virginia. In letters to West Virginia state House Speaker Roger Hanshaw (R) and Senate President Craig Blair (R), six Republican Maryland state legislators who represent Garrett, Allegany and Washington counties asked the legislature to consider adding their residents to the Mountaineer State. “We believe this arrangement may be mutually beneficial for both states and for our local constituencies,” the identical letters read. “Please advise on next steps.”

Comments:

Watching intently from the Peoples Republic of Illinois. If they can figure out how to do this legally, I predict about 80% of Illinois counties petitioning Missouri, Indiana and Kentucky to change states. We have been unrepresented here for years.

Backlash from the last re-redistricting Gerrymander, in a year of re-redistricting. And overplaying their slim Majorities, in many states as well as nationwide.

I am a citizen of the free state of West Virginia, and for the most part I like it pretty well. It would be good for truly oppressed people to join with us, but I am concerned. I've been to Maryland. The first thing you notice going from WV to MD is that the roads are better. The second thing you see are all the signs telling you what you are no longer allowed to do. They go on for miles. If you join with us, drop the high tax, anti gun, nanny state communism. We like our bad roads, our guns and our freedom. And we like to be left alone. Dont vote for ten years and dont engage in any political activism. Refugees dont get to decide what everyone else is going to do.

I'm a transplant from Maryland and now live in PA. What I find are the RINOS and Liberals moving from Montgomery Maryland to Pennsylvania. They are trying to get away from what they did to Montgomery Maryland making it liberal and beyond unlivable. The problem is, after they get here in PA, they want to bring Montgomery County MD laws into our county. God help us.

Maryland can take Philadelphia from Pennsylvania if they want compensation. That would solidify them as a liberal hellhole and free Pennsylvania of a bunch of crime and corruption.

It would be similarly nice if Western Colorado would secede from the Peoples Republic of Colorado and join the State of Wyoming.

I lived in WV for 9 years, 1986-1995. The state was solidly blue back then due to the miner’s unions. Then along came 0bama and later Illary, both of whom were out to destroy the coal industry. I’m filled with schadenfreude for both of them. Now if they can just get Manchin to switch parties.

Yes the roads are better once in Maryland, but if you've ever driven in the city of Baltimore, you'll find that an off road vehicle may have a tough time coming out in one piece. Also remember #4, all those signs of what's against the law were put in place by the demosluts in the center of the state populated by people employed by the federal government. The three western counties of Maryland, as well as the eastern shore and the two most eastern counties of Harford, and Cecil counties are populated by mostly Republican voters. I suspect the people who live in the counties that asked to leave Maryland have more in common with West Virginia than the people in central Maryland. As for loving bad roads. No one likes bad roads, and wanting decent roads to ride on doesn't make one a socialist. Drive up route one into Pa. through Chadds Ford and see how long that new alignment on your car holds up or your dental work.

West Virginia would welcome the freedom-loving citizens from Garrett, Allegany and Washington counties. They would be able to get a firearm carry permit--a feat that is almost impossible in Maryland, but is enjoyed by a high percentage of West Virginia residents. In Maryland, their lawmakers do not want the citizens to have firearms. In West Virginia, the lawmakers recently removed the state sales tax on the purchase of firearms and ammunition.

A new requirement for truck drivers coming from Canada to be vaccinated against COVID-19 could add to supply chain challenges for everything from cars to fruit. The Canadian Trucking Alliance said it could effect more than 12,000 drivers who cross the border daily. "Based on surveys done by the Alliance, and national vaccination averages, CTA believes this will result in a 10-15% exit rate of the 120,000 truck drivers currently crossing the border," the group said. The organization said it is working with its counterparts in the U.S. before the vaccination mandate goes into effect.

BRUSSELS  — Tensions soared Monday between Russia and the West over concerns that Moscow is planning to invade Ukraine, with NATO outlining potential troop and ship deployments, Britain saying it would withdraw some diplomats from Kyiv, and Ireland denouncing upcoming Russian war games off its coast as unwelcome. The Western alliance’s statement summed up moves already announced by member countries, but restating them under the NATO banner appeared aimed at showing its resolve. It was just one of a series of announcements that signaled the West is ramping up its rhetoric in the information war that has accompanied the Ukraine standoff.  CORRECTIONS*

New York City's Eric Adams vowed to crack down on crime if elected mayor, but after just three weeks in the position, he’s facing major setbacks as crimes continue sweeping the city. "It's terrible - the city has gotten worse now," Vincente Malava told WABC of the increase in crimes. Over the course of the last three weeks, the five boroughs have been rocked by a 16% increase in shootings compared to last year, a 65% increase in transit crimes, and a 25% increase in robberies. Meanwhile, the NYPD is reeling from the five officers who have been shot since Jan. 1, including a rookie cop who was shot dead.

The CDC has officially moved the goalposts on what it means to be vaccinated from COVID-19. We all knew this day was coming, even as an onslaught of “fact-checkers” assured us it was “misinformation” to assert such a change was coming publicly. But first, let’s talk about the details. CDC Dir. Rochelle Walensky appeared on CBS News and shared the news that the two-dose regiment will no longer suffice to be considered “fully vaccinated.” Instead, you will need a booster jab in order to be classified as “up to date.” That comes as part of a “pivot” in language by the government, one that many were maligned for predicting.

I’m not sure what Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) thought he was going to get by pushing a vote on the Democratic effort to federalize elections (which they call ‘voting rights’) and on the filibuster. Schumer knew that he was likely to get a “no” on the filibuster from Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ). They’ve only been holding fast on the subject for months. Both also were very firm on the subject in speeches — Sinema earlier in the week and Manchin earlier on Wednesday. It wasn’t happening, they said. But Schumer decided to commit electoral suicide anyway, and he got it tonight.

The overwhelming majority of Senate Democrats will soon move to eliminate the filibuster -- which has protected the rights of the chamber’s minority for more than a century – because they feel the need to pass ‘voting rights legislation’ is just too intense to be blocked by the 60-vote threshold. By merging several pieces of legislation into one mega-bill and calling it the ‘Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act,’ Democrats are trying to scare people into believing that if the bill doesn’t pass, they will lose their right to vote.

One thing we must give Democrats credit for is their unity. Yes, certain members of the party such as Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) will occasionally diverge from the party line and oppose particularly radical pieces of legislation, but when it comes to big moments and key votes – on impeachment, for instance – Democrats circle the wagons. Contrarily, Republicans tend to fracture at the most inopportune moments, which is why it was refreshing to see virtual unanimity amongst the GOP after Monday’s outrageous raid on former President Donald Trump’s residence Mar-a-Lago. (snip) If we could harness this reaction to generate electricity, it would be one of the most efficient and least polluting sources of energy possible. It is helpful to think of political developments as moves on the chessboard made to advance an objective. In chess, the objective is to win the game, chess being zero-sum. Politics is like that, too, though participants often claim it's not, that they're acting for the greater good, principles at the foundation of democracy, motherhood and apple pie and all that — which is true in some cases but never if Democrats are in the game. This brings me to Attorney General Garland's claim that the Mar-a-Lago home invasion wasn't a raid at all.
