A Riverside high school teacher has been placed on leave after a viral video recorded by a student showed her hollering and dancing around a classroom in a fake feathered headdress, sparking outrage from the Native American community, school officials and local politicians.
The video, which was posted online on Wednesday, shows the teacher chanting a mnemonic device — “Sohcahtoa,” often used in math courses to remember trigonometric functions — while stomping around the classroom and making chopping motions. The video has more than 3.7 million views on Twitter and hundreds of reactions on Instagram.
The Riverside Unified School District released a statement on Thursday, saying the teacher’s
Why doesn't she just identify as an Indian, and tell them all to pound sand? You can't question what someone identifies as anymore, and can probably be sued for doing so.

She's probably an Elizabeth Warren supporter. Where is old Liz on this case, anyway?

When I was in third grade, our teacher who was crazy about the Hopi (pueblo) indians, had an amazing pueblo erected in the corner of our classroom. Like a big playhouse, built by someone’s father years before, two stories, ladders. We studied the Hopis and dressed in their costumes. Even made our own little adobe clay bricks - straw and all - and built a small model pueblo. She was into Hopis bigtime.
What would they do about that now?

And, about making chopping motions, the Atlanta Braves still have the tomahawks all over their uniforms and their fans chant and make that chopping motion. (When she was married to Ted Turner, Jane Fonda used to make that motion at Braves games.) The tomahawk was a serious weapon, used to bash in skulls. And no one appears to care about Atlanta’s team and fans. Go figure.

Per 4; cultural appropriation...guillotine! But if a Hopi woman sings a Britney Spears tune, that's just admiration.

I'm quite unwoke, but this was cringe inducing. I don't think it got her point over at all - the kids looked embarrassed.

I worked 14 years on an Indian Reservation. I learned that "Native Americans are outraged" is phony. Most Indians are simply not into the fake news that the Media foists on us..

Back in the day, the wacky, creative teachers like this one were the most beloved. And the ones we learned the most from.
I bet her students never forget what Sohcahtoa stands for.

When I was growing up, the word "Indian" was synonymous with "indigenous people of America," or "Native American." Today, that word has come to refer to IT workers, or convenience store owners.

I have told the facetious story of "Chief Soh-Cah-Toa" to students when I was teaching trigonometry. It is a handy mnemonic device to remember Sine=Opposite/Hypotenuse; Cosine = Adjacent/Hypotenuse; Tangent = Opposite/Adjacent.....but never imagined this silly, over the top behavior to help the students remember it.
She doesn't deserve to be fired....but is a bit of a dingbat, clearly, to get this 'enthusiastic' about this mnemonic device.

Re #11, a friend calls them "feather Indians" or "dot Indians" to distinguish the two kinds. IMO, slightly humorous. I suspect that these hysterical types would not see any humor in it. Fortuantely, he is his own boss.

How dare a new math teacher even try to teach Trig to students!
Simply trying is correct enough.

Twenty-five years ago she would have been applauded for making it memorable for students. What she was teaching is fundamental to geometry. My guess is that it’s effective, therefore it’s offensive.
What a bunch of losers.

I'm a Native American by both blood and culture. I'm hardly ever offended by any references to Natives, even those that are a bit boorish. The Soh-cah-toa mnemonic, passed to me be by a very pretty but very smart post-grad, former Tri-Delt Cheerleader, saved my bacon in pre-cal and also taught me not to stereotype, so I don't care how it is taught, even though as a Geology and geophysics major, I thought of the mnemonic more as a South Pacific volcano, Krakatoa, located in the Indonesian Sunda Strait between the large islands of Java and Sumatra. In the current controversy, I believe that a mnemonic loses its utility if it takes a Broadway production to drive it home. On a related note, I was sure that I'd never need to know that information in my working life but I was wrong; I used it in two completely different career fields. One, in doing directional drilling of an oil and gas well to hit a pay zone two miles down but beneath a surface obstruction that prohibited the drilling of a straight, vertical well but required drilling at an acute angle to get to the right location at total depth. The second time was in accident reconstruction calculations from the scene of a multi fatality accident where the eye witness testimony lacked agreement. Reconstruction involves working backwards form the point of impact, applying the Conservation of Linear Momentum law to determine the speeds and movements of the subject vehicles. Once the entry and exit angles are known and the coefficients of friction of the tire rubber and pavement surface are determined, a little common sense trig can tell the story.
