An accident involving a firearm on the set of the upcoming film "Rust" has left the director of photography dead and the director injured. Star Alec Baldwin discharged the prop gun while filming a scene on Thursday, authorities say. A helicopter transported cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by medical personnel, according to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office. The director, 42-year-old Joel Souza, was transported via ambulance to Christus St. Vincent’s hospital and is receiving emergency treatment for his injuries. "According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged,"

Comments:

This has happened before, most notably in 1984 with Jon-Erik Hexum.

Baldwin is a horse's hind end. How'd he manage to kill one and injure another with blanks? Everyone knows that blanks can be deadly at close range.

Worked with Baldwin twice. He was a jerk. That said the firearms should be under control by the armoror a skilled job on the set. They should not be loaded until the scene they are to be used on and always treated as if they are loaded.

Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee's son was killed by a 'blank' on a movie set. Apparently some material had lodged in the barrel and when the blank was fired, the object/material had the same affect as a bullet. If Baldwin had his finger on the trigger before the scene, that might have been the 'misfire.' If he didn't aim off to the side of the targeted actor, that was a mistake, but most of all the Pyro Technician / Explosives / armorer crew member failed to do his job. A lot of people in Hollywood fake their experience to get a role or a job. Maybe that is what happened here. In this day of special effects, a low power puff of smoke can easily be turned into something that looks like a real gunshot. Guns are supposed to be locked until needed in a scene and then triple checked. Maybe the causal gun porn that Hollywood churns out 24/7, returned to hurt them when someone confused fantasy with reality and thought they knew all about guns because they watched thousands of hours of gun play Hollywood style.

What a tragedy. But, what a hypocrite of Baldwin to produce and star in a movie with gun play. All these Hollywood liberals complain so much about America's "gun culture," but they're the number one pushers of that culture.

#2 - If Mr. Baldwin took the NRA up on firearms training rather than trashing the organization, this would have never happened. Baldwin held the gun, pointed it at a person and shot the gun. It wasn't the gun's fault. It was Alec Baldwin's fault.

If he had had firearms training, he would have known not to put your finger on the trigger until the gun is pointed at your target. Of course Baldwin is a class A idiot who just loves to hear the sound of his own voice. So I can see where he could have been trying to explain his viewpoint and waving his arms around with the gun in his hand.

In fairness to actors, all the normal gun safety rules are out the window when filming a movie. It requires pointing at persons. It requires fingers on triggers. It requires breaking many safety rules to make the movie believable. This is why the prop master responsible for the guns and ammo must be ULTRA careful and very skilled. There must be ZERO tolerance for any live ammo ANYWHERE near the set. And double and triple checking guns prior to shooting a scene....so you aren't shooting a person, as was done here. I am aware of a large scale security exercise on special weapons where ALL persons arriving at the gate of the training facility had their vehicles detailed searched and were personally wanded with a metal detector to ensure that not even a single live round or single loaded magazine came onto the training facility. All guns used were modified to function semi-automatically with blanks in a physically large training scenario. NO live ammo, ever!

Actor Heath Ledger killed himself in 2008 by fooling around with a prop gun, jokingly putting it to his temple and pulling the trigger. It was loaded with a blank but the force of the firing killed him. That said, I hope that the odious Baldwin does prison time - the inmates are really going to “love” him.

It was 55 or so years ago I thought the gun was empty but as I was taught before aiming at anything; pointed it at the ground and was very surprised to have a live round blow a huge hole in the ground. What idiot doesn't check any gun before aiming it at a person. Baldwin is now; and has always been a twit. He has always been a loser and I hope he finally pays the price for his stupidity.

Naturally, the Yale Daily News downplayed the info under the headline, “COVID-19 reinfection is likely among unvaccinated individuals, Yale study finds.” The Yale study concluded that the risk of COVID-19 reinfection stands at 5% at three months after recovery and decreases to 50% at 17 months. By contrast, COVID-19 vaccine protection against infection can wane to a mere 20% as early as five months after full vaccination.
