We've all done it: rushing to get ready for work only to realise you've misplaced your keys and have to sift through piles of clutter to find them. But now scientists have developed a robot that can do it for you.The prototype, created by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has a robotic arm with a camera and radio frequency antenna attached to its gripper. It works by searching for an object using its antenna, which bounces signals off a tiny radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag that can be attached to an item in case it goes missing.

Initially I thought this was a wonderful idea and then I learned that it doesn't help with correcting the clutter. RATS!

Didn’t there used to be a finder that involved clapping one’s hands?

Robots are stupid, ignorant, and predictable. It's easy to find something that wants to be found. A needle in a haystack it the only piece of metal. A gold needle in a pile of brass needles presents a more difficult challenge. A secret password written on a Post-it in a pile of Post-its with other passwords is not so easy to find.

You could do the exact same with a hand held RFID scanner if you had your keys tagged in the first place.
The wow factor of this is pretty much zero.

My keys are only on one of two possible places. In my right front pants pocket, or on the key hook.....well, in the ignition of the cars that still use keys, while I'm driving it, too. Tractors keys on key hooks, gold cart keys on key hooks.
I decided long ago (~40 years0 that I was sick of looking for keys, so decided to NEVER, EVER put my keys anywhere but in my pocket or on the key hook by the door. Never have to look for keys.

I'm sure those robots will find a lot of things as they sift through your private stuff and spy on you in your own home.

Seems to me that once you have a robot capable of this, you also have a robot capable of more…
Let’s say we call the robot Ernie. Then (if Ernie has a microphone), “Ernie, go get me a beer,” “Ernie let the dogs out/in,” “Ernie preheat the oven to 325,” and endless other chores that Ernie could perform with the arm he uses to retrieve your keys should be easily possible—it’s just software at that point.
But I’m also with #6. I never lose my keys. They are always in my right trouser pocket, along with my lighter, swiss army knife, wallet and loose change. Left pocket has cell phone and cigarettes, right hip pocket has a larger knife, left hip pocket is either empty or contains small items for the trash can. When I get up in the morning, everything gets transferred from yesterday’s trousers to today’s trousers.

I know to put my keys in the same place (purse) but don't always do it, and when I do sometimes forget where I set my purse. Same with phone but I have discovered I can ask Alexa where's my phone and she calls me so I can find it. I know, Alexa shouldn't be in my house, but I don't have anything to hide and it's just me, myself and I here.

Jeez, when I come in the keys go on a hook on the wall, when I go out I just grab them...no big deal...definitely don't need some robot to find them for me....
