Really stupid 18 year old "logic", but I had been starting to get a feeling that this was different than the standard "violent black teen gangsta" story. I can see that he's getting zero sympathy from the posters here. Maybe that's right, maybe not. As someone who fought bullies repeatedly with fists in Jr Hi and HS, I can understand the frustration. I thought about beating up one bully with a two by four a few months after multiple attacks on me. But, I didn't do it, and figured out that there was no percentage in that sort of action. I only defended my self with fists at the times attacked. Never used any weapon, let alone a gun, which I did have access too, but it literally never entered my mind to use it that way. We'll see how this unfolds.

Gun was the wrong answer to getting beat up. But I'd have sympathy if he'd shattered a few structural facial bones with a brick or something similar. Fighting back was the right answer but he escalated too far.

I am sympathetic so far. I was relentlessly beaten in the early 70's for the crimes of being white and going to a black school. They dont just punch you and leave. They punch and kick and beat without mercy, and only stop when they get tired. Then as often as not three more start in. We hear from all kinds of tough guys about how they fight them. I guess they've never had to actually fight against odds like that. I did. Pretty much daily around 1971. He should have killed them all.

Who wasn't bullied or robbed in school? I was robbed first day of first grade. After I got over the surprise that there was evil in the world, I took measures to defend, which did not include a 45. And it is not a racial issue. There are mean people in every race. I have been threatened by them all, and helped by them all.

I think I'll wait to see what the police and DA say about this case. I'm skeptical of families that talk about their precious "turning his life around," and how he "had a good heart" apart from the mugging, stealing, and other crimes. It is just a matter of luck and a few millimeters this "good boy" doesn't have a murder charge lodged against him.

Apologies for the second post, but I suspect some family dysfunction here - he lives with a grandmother, and an aunt went to the school to report the bullying. Why not one of his parents? No mention of his father in the article, and his mother talked to reporters outside the grandmother's house after the shooting. Was she around before, or did she just show up after the shooting? Also, one picture looks like Timothy might be sporting the gold teeth popular with a certain minority demographic.
