California Governor Gavin Newsom has returned prime beachfront land worth an estimated $72 million to the descendants of a black family it was seized from in 1924.
Newsom signed a law transferring the ownership of Bruce's Beach, a small park now worth an estimated $72 million, back to the Bruce family. Original owners Willa and Charles Bruce's great-great-grandson Anthony Bruce was there for the signing ceremony. He will now take ownership of the plot, alongside his dad Derrick and brother Michael. The plot currently serves as a grassy park and lifeguard training facility.

FTA:'What we're doing here today can be done and replicated anywhere else. There's an old adage: Once a mind is stretched, it never goes back to its original form.'
There are undoubtedly thousands and thousands of people who feel cheated by eminent domain seizures of property. Those will soon be up for litigation across the country.

It now becomes taxable real estate. Wait until the Bruce family gets the tax bill. They won't be able to afford it.

Someone will happily buy it off them at a fraction of its real value. The Bruce's will still get rich, but others more so. All that white privilege don'tcha know. Watch Newsom be part of a group that purchases the land.

The family will sell the land, spend money like drunken sailors for a while, go bankrupt, and then b**** about how they were cheated in the land sale.

The land wasn't "seized" from the family. They were paid a fair market value at the time under eminent domain law, which has been used many thousands of times around the country to whites, blacks, yellows, and reds.

I can't wait to see all of the land seized by eminent domain returned to the rightful heirs.
I have to start looking into my Cherokee (for real, not like Fauxcahontas) ancestry.

It was a successful and thriving business which some of their white neighbors didn't like, thus, the government took the land from the family.
#5, they are being grand-fathered in with Prop. 13 status so their taxable amount is locked based on the value in 1978.
They still need to determine the actual direct descendants who will be given the deed.
As far as developing the land, good luck with the militant Coastal Commission, and environmental groups who will file multiple lawsuits. They'll need to produce EIR's, go through the City traffic commission, and other commissions too.
However, with the new State law going into effect in January, they will be allowed to build up-to 4 housing units. I would divide the property into smaller sections, and then build as many housing units as possible, then lease the Lifeguard station which will provide a revenue stream for very long time.

The Klan was a terrorist organization even back then. The Democrat's Brown Shirts, before their was even Nazism. The KKK may have even been the inspiration of Hitlers agitators.
But do as they want? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! In California, you can only do what the government permits, if they feel like it.

#11 - There are numerous examples of "eminent domain" abuse. What was the fair market value of the property in 1924? Was it $14,000? I don't know, and I doubt anyone here does, either. Was there a racial angle to this public appropriation? Was the town perhaps unhappy with Negroes coming there to recreate? Was that the impetus for the town's claim on the resort property? It occurred after Klan protests directed against the resort. Sure looks possible, if not probable.
It would appear justice may have been served here. I don't understand why the ire.

#18 You forgot about the Germans that had the same thing happen to them?
But I guess they don't matter because they don't "look different".
Most people have never heard of that. They had internment camps set up for them to if a greedy neighbor turned them in for saying something wrong.
