Washington, DC – Two DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers were indicted on Sept. 23 in connection with the death of a man fleeing police who rode his moped into the side of an SUV. The incident occurred at about 10:10 p.m. on Oct. 23 after MPD Officer Terence Sutton, 37, and MPD Lieutenant Andrew Zabavsky saw 20-year-old Karon Hylton-Brown driving a Revel electric moped down the sidewalk in the 500-block of Kennedy Street, NW, The Washington Post reported.

So, an electric motorcycle driver is illegally driving on the sidewalk, and not wearing a helmet, also illegal. Officers follow him and he crashes his "bike" and is fatally injured.
And they are arrested for murder.
I can't see why ANY person would be a police officer in DC. It's a suicide mission to even attempt to enforce the laws. If you are a DC cop, the only workable approach seem to be to sit in a doughnut shop all day, eating and drinking coffee, and only respond to take reports after criminals have left. Or just leave and find a normal, sane place to live.

Is DC trying to get police to quit? Stuff like this certainly encourages it. This is DC though. They would rather have brown shirts instead of real police.

The police violated pursuit procedures. They could have taken the license number and gone to his house at supper time and picked him up without endangering the public with a chase. He ran was chased into the side of an SUV. That is the reason for the no pursuit, except in certain circumstances.

Re#5.... So what happens if they show up at his house and he runs?
You can't ENFORCE the law if you strip the enforcers of the tools to do so. If the DC cops had half a brain, they would all resign or walk off the job enmass until these charges are dropped.
If they violated a procedure, cite them for that. But murder is a bridge too far.

Revel Electric Mopeds are "Ride Share" scooters, by the minute or by the hour...NOT privately owned or Traceble to a home address if used criminally..The company put 1000 on the streets in NYC, 400 in DC.
Do not require a motorcycle license, training, permit...each has two helmets provided and 'requires' their use.
MY solution to the explosion of "Fleeing/Eluding"? Cite/fine them for EVERY traffic infraction during their run, even if it is hundreds of citations, drop NONE of the charges, add "Resisting" to every charge...and make it a "No Bail" crime, because..Clearly they are a Flight Risk.
Criminals ONLY commit those crimes they think they can get away with...or even if caught won't cost them much money or time.
Make it so Crime does NOT Pay...again.

Oh, so the police were chasing the suspect at a speed of 45 MPH. I'd say that is more like following the suspect. This idiot was wearing no helmet and driving on the sidewalk where any person walking was at risk. Then this idiot runs into the side of an SUV and is killed AND IT'S THE COP'S FAULT. On top of that if he had a helmet on it probably would have saved his life. Just another case of a person running from the police. A simple ticket would have saved his life. Sickening...

#5; How do you know if it had a tag or even registered?. Most I've seen are not. It could also have been stolen. Kind of like looking for a murderous gang member by checking his gun registration.

And to think those people in DC run the country! No wonder this country is screwed.

I retired in May after 32 years in law enforcement, criminal justice and the courts. And all I can say about this is it is so wrong I am just sitting here with my mouth open. The entire DC force should walk out en masse.

“Charging documents said Officer Sutton drove the wrong-way down one-way street and ran seven stop signs during the pursuit ....”
Seriously?! I don’t even know how to respond to this! The cop was DOING HIS JOB!!
I agree with Number 12. The entire force should walk off!

Article includes a lot of detail and is far more useful than most reporting.
But isn't October 23 in the future? Maybe FutureCrime is real. Or maybe I need some coffee.

If our national police force(s) ever become federalized, cops nationwide can do anything they want with impunity. Who you going to call when your local federal cop screws up? Do you think the Feds will care? They'll rally around each other and bury misconduct, of which there will be plenty (think Australia). I'm not faulting these two DC cops as I think they are being unjustly charged for doing their job.

Had he done this because the OWNER of the Moped was chasing after his property, would HE have been accused of murder?? I want to know this because Police are my contracted assistance in returning my property to me should I call it in, or they witness the theft in person. I, as a citizen, could be considered "accessory to a murder."
