One hundred and thirty-one federal judges oversaw court cases involving companies in which they or their family members owned stock, according to a new investigation. Those judges violated U.S. law and judicial ethics as they failed to recuse themselves from a total of 685 court cases in which they may have had a conflict of interest, an investigation by The Wall Street Journal found. In those cases, about two-thirds of the rulings were in favor of the financial interests of the judge, the Journal reported. The cases took place between 2010 and 2020, and of the two-thirds of federal district judges who disclosed individual stock holdings, about 20 percent of them heard

The Los Angeles County sheriff says he will not enforce the county's vaccine mandate in his agency.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva, who oversees the largest sheriff's department in the country with roughly 18,000 employees, said Thursday in a Facebook Live event that he does not plan to carry out the county's mandate, under which Los Angeles County employees had to be fully vaccinated by Oct. 1.
The mandate was issued by executive order in August and allows only for religious and medical exemptions. Villanueva said his employees are willing to be terminated rather than get vaccinated.

A Virginia-based parent group attempting to oust five Loudoun County School Board members was given a small win after a Loudoun County Circuit Court judge ruled Tuesday in favor of the organization’s recall petition against a board member who sought to dismiss it.
On Tuesday, a judge denied Loudoun County school board member Beth Barts’ motion to dismiss the case and also removed Loudoun County Commonwealth’s Attorney Buta Biberaj from the case.

When does a pandemic end? How does a pandemic end? These were the questions I was asking myself after Megyn Kelly hosted Dr. Monica Gandhi on her podcast last week. As it turns out, sooner or later we’ll have to admit that our COVID-19 pandemic is morphing into the endemic stage of the disease.
A disease can be classified as endemic when it is “persisting in a population or region, generally having settled to a relatively constant rate of occurrence,” or, as Dr. Gandhi put it, you’ve reached endemic levels of a disease when “it’s gone down to a level where you live with it.”

Seattle's police department is preparing to fire up to 400 officers who have not yet had their Covid shot in line with the city's strict vaccine mandate—despite already suffering staff shortages, rising crime rates and high 911 response times.
