When I was a little boy, my parents and I took the ocean ferry out to Nantucket one blustery summer day. My father had me make a handwritten note with my address. We put it in an empty wine bottle, corked it good and tight, and walked back to the stern where the propellers were churning the saltwater with thunder. I looked out on the vast water then, and for the very first time in my short life, I could see no land. Dad said to lob the bottle off to the side. [Snip] I have no recollection that we ever heard anything back. Turns out, that’s not the point.

Lovely article to read first thing in the morning as I look out from my porch in the beautiful state of Tennessee. And then the great surprise at the end to learn that the author has moved here from California. Welcome! Glad to have you!

30 years ago I would go scuba diving of the Atlantic coast of Florida, twice a week. During the time Cubans were fleeing Castro on homemade rafts, I found a bottle with a note written with a dull pencil on a ripped off piece of a brown bag. It was in Spanish and I could see it was someone desperate and praying. The bottle was probably a month old as it had growth on it. I always wondered if the person writing it lived to make it to the USA.

Today the child would be arrested, taken from his parents and sent to a re-education camp….all because he was “littering”.

Many of us remember the big stink that Joe Biden made last year when he bothered to campaign about how the Democrat would treat America’s allies so much better than that loudmouth Donald Trump who was always talking about America First. [Snip] when the president of a long-time democratic ally and an economic powerhouse, especially one from Asia where signs of respect are so revered and expected, personally gets involved in the return of soldiers’ remains, it’s a pretty big deal. Or should be. The Biden administration, however, sent no one to the ceremony, which

The biggest, most-discussed and arguably, most important national political question for the next couple of years is: Will Donald Trump run to regain the White House in 2024? He likes it that way. So, there is no real incentive for No. 45 to announce a decision about seeking to become No. 47 before, say, early 2023. In fact, he can avoid certain fundraising rules and protocols by leaving the issue open. And then there’s the uncertainty of legal actions against him. Long campaigns have become

A team of New York Times reporters has closely examined Joe Biden’s thoroughly botched Afghan troop withdrawal and his tardy, aborted evacuation efforts that left thousands abandoned behind and professes to see in the Democrat’s halting series of decisions a promising new Biden Doctrine of foreign policy. God help us if they’re correct.

Joe Biden went on vacation again. So, maybe his minions spared him from marking the Labor Day holiday with the newest set of job statistics that he should hope he’s not judged on soon. The numbers were awful. [Snip] Contrast that with Biden’s record over these past 230 days: Dozens of executive orders, basically undoing many of Trump’s executive orders, and a $1.9 trillion virus relief bill that included $300 unemployment supplements and up to $1,400 checks to individuals. Biden assured fully-vaccinated Americans as recently as July they need not

My unelected parents dictated the rules of my youthful world like China’s Communists, if I had known anything about those people in that faraway place who were fighting a revolution there at the very same time in the 1940s. We had clear one-party rule in our house — two members of the National League of Parental Unity (NLPU) and me, a one-person proletariat. Its self-appointed ruling presidium of two actually and ruthlessly restricted and even censored my TV screen time with firm, non-negotiable limits. Like China’s Communist Party just did for all video-game players among the younger folks in that country’s 1.4 billion population

Even if he does have a little ear-bud feeding him words to say from a nearby room, Joe Biden doesn’t seem to know or remember quite a few things these days. Like the names of people standing right next to him or what you call that immense, five-sided building over in Virginia, you know, where all those military people are. But one thing Joe Biden is absolutely certain about, when he can express a coherent thought, is that he must get all U.S. troops out of Afghanistan this week — because his mouthy predecessor signed an agreement with the Taliban. Biden is equally

Word out of the White House this week is that Joe Biden, or at least his handlers, intend to recapture the narrative on his colossal Afghan exit screw-up. Good luck with that tardy effort. It’s as if saying something in Washington, even without attribution, makes it so in this White House wonderland. [Snip] News Flash: The evacuation narrative train left the Kabul station more than a week ago when U.S. troops were finally gone, the Taliban was all over but so were countless thousands of Americans and Afghan allies. But the reality won’t stop this president from

They squat on the roadside, feet filthy in broken sandals, eyes empty, faces averted. Their belongings are few. Most were abandoned on their long flight from fear. Or stolen at gunpoint by armed marauders. Comfort to these lost souls is a foreign word. Hoping seems dangerous. They try to forget sights they’ve seen. They have no idea where they’re going. The scenes you see these days on TV of refugees in Afghanistan or Syria or anywhere convulsed by war are truly awful. [Snip] But, honestly, the terrible scenes of death and fear and children lost to families are nowhere near the truth on-site.

Now that Joe Biden has handled the Afghan evacuation crisis with such skill, his vice president is off in Asia this week to offer her views on the future of the Indo-Pacific region that’s been on no one’s mind recently. Apparently, Kamala Harris is now ready to move on from the deadly debacle of Biden’s premature Afghan troop withdrawal, his belated troop redeployment there, and the resulting chaotic evacuation effort of thousands who should have been long gone by now.

Look, very few Americans want Americans to keep fighting in Afghanistan. Twenty years – 19 of them mission creep — is more than enough time to do it, if you can. But there’s withdrawing, and then there is fleeing. The American president is fleeing. Like every president, Joe Biden has numerous problems. Many, in fact, are of his own making. Like withdrawing during the peak Afghan fighting season, instead of waiting for winter. With Afghanistan well on the way to falling quickly to the Taliban and a record number of illegals breaching our southern border, Joe Biden has gone on vacation. Literally. The pressure

Something city people notice when they move to a small town is the almost palpable trust local folks display toward each other. Walk up to a stranger in a large city and they pull back, wary of your purpose. Trust used to be the national default position, too. [Snip] But in so many disappointing ways, all that has changed drastically. It’s seriously corroding our national character. And it’s profoundly affecting the way we live, work, vote, entertain, talk to each other. Or, rather, talk at each other now

President Biden slammed Border Patrol agents filmed on horseback attempting to stop migrants from crossing the Rio Grande into Texas, saying they would “pay” for their actions. “It was horrible to see what you saw, to see people treated like they did—horses barely running them over people being strapped,” Biden said at a press conference at the White House on Friday. “It’s outrageous. I promise you those people will pay.” Biden added, “There will be consequences. It’s an embarrassment. But beyond an embarrassment is dangerous, it’s wrong.”

White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced Thursday that Border Patrol agents will no longer be permitted to use horses to guard the border in Del Rio, Texas, after “horrific” photos emerged of agents swinging long reins while interacting with Haitian migrants. The announcement comes after the media caused a frenzy by falsely portraying the videos and photos as showing agents hitting the migrants with whips. It was later revealed that the agents were in fact wielding the long reins that make it easier to maintain control of their horses, according to Border Control chief Raul Ortiz. An unnamed Border Patrol agent told Townhall’s Julio Rosas that mounted agents

Why has the federal government been trying so hard to keep surveillance footage of January 6th under wraps? We may have an answer to that question if a set of newly released videos are any indication.A judge ordered the videos be released against the wishes of the government prosecutors who claimed doing so would undermine national security. Of course, that makes no sense, and what’s on the videos runs counter to the chosen narrative.Behold, the event that has been compared to the Civil War by the President of the United States. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is warning the Republican Party that staying in former President Donald Trump’s thrall will not lead to a viable political future. The Lexington Herald-Leader obtained a preview of Peril, the upcoming book from Bob Woodward and Robert Costa that has already produced a multitude of explosive details on Trump’s last days in office. According to the new excerpt, McConnell is encouraging the GOP to move away from Trumpism, calling the ex-president “a fading brand. Retired. OTTB as they say in Kentucky — off-the-track Thoroughbred.” “There is a clear trend moving,” McConnell said. “Sucking up to Donald Trump is not a strategy that works.”

By an overwhelming majority, the House voted to fund the Israeli Iron Dome today, a defensive system that protects against Palestinian rocket barrages. That vote was necessary as a stand-alone bill because far-left anti-Semites, mostly members of the so-called “squad,” joined forces earlier in the week to strip the funding from the main budget bill. Naturally, those who live to see Israel wiped off the face of the Earth didn’t take it well as scenes of lunacy were presented on the floor. A coalition of 164 Catholic groups sent a letter to President Biden on Thursday telling him his border policies violate the tenets of his own faith and urged him to embrace Pope Francis’ teachings. The groups blasted the pandemic border expulsion authority, known as Title 42, which the government says gives it the power to immediately turn back illegal immigrants without giving them the chance to make claims for protection in the U.S.(Snip)The letter comes just ahead of the Catholic Church’s World Day for Migrants and Refugees, which is Sunday. The pope has labeled this year’s celebration “Towards an Ever Wider We.”
