The University of Texas at San Antonio is no longer using “Come and Take It” as a football chant.
In August, university President Taylor Eighmy expressed concern that “Come and Take It” is inseparably linked to political debates, including those over gun rights.
The chant is emblazoned on a flag waved at UTSA's football games and also used as a rallying cry during the fourth quarter.
The phrase has roots in the Battle of the Alamo, which occurred in San Antonio and preceded the formation of the Republic of Texas.

More than a little disappointing that a university doesn’t know or chooses to ignore the actual background of the phrase molōn labe.

Snowflakes. I expect that some of the chants they hear this weekend will really have them clutching their pearls.

FTA: "The phrase has roots in the Battle of the Alamo, which occurred in San Antonio and preceded the formation of the Republic of Texas."
What idiots. That phrase had nothing to do with the Battle of the Alamo. It was the people of Gonzales, Texas who resisted Santa Ana's Mexican army's attempt to take their one small bronze cannon in 1835. It had been given to the people of Gonzales in 1831 (by the Mexican government of the time, when it still operated under the Constitution of 1824, before Santa Ana's abrogation of that constitution and establishing a dictatorship) to defend themselves against Comanche raids. The people of Gonzales were the ones who made the 'Come and Take It' flag, daring the Mexican army to disarm the people of Gonzales. The Mexican army left WITHOUT taking the cannon. This had nothing to do with the Alamo, except that the Mexican dictator, Santa Ana, was attempting to disarm

[hit 'submit' too soon!] cont'd . . . the populace of Texas so that they could not actively resist his dictatorship. If that sounds familiar, it should. The current dictator wannabes also want a disarmed, compliant and docile It also shows the early inhabitants of Texas were also aware of the story of Thermopylae.

Well, of course it's linked to "political debates." It was a "political debate" when it was the answer by the Spartans to the Persians. Same when it was the answer of the Texicans to the Mexicans. It is a slogan used by those who actually believe in the 2nd Amendment of our Bill of Rights. Apparently eighmy is not one of those. He would rather be anti-2nd Amendment than be seen as a "right-winger."

That's okay. UTSA doesn't win many football games anyway.

Do College Presidents have to pass a dimwit test? As a group is there any organization less in touch with reality and America than the Council of Public University Presidents and Chancellors?

If honest history is still taught in our schools, students would learn that if it were not for armed citizens, we would probably all be subjects of the Queen of England today.
As Thomas Jefferson noted: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it’s natural manure."

Thank you #6, 7. It was Mexican Colonel Domingo de Urgartechea, on behalf of dictator Santa Ana, who attempted to seize the cannon but was sent packing.
