Federal officials are investigating why McDonald’s McFlurry machines are always broken, a report says. The machines, which are used to also churn out the fast food chain’s milkshakes and ice cream cones, are so temperamental that even the company pokes fun at them. “We have a joke about our soft serve machine but are worried it won’t work,” McDonald’s tweeted last year. Now the Federal Trade Commission is probing the situation and contacted franchise owners to get information on what is causing problems with the machines, according to The Wall Street Journal.(Snip)Owners of McDonald’s outlets have complained that the machines are complicated to maintain and to fix

FTC budget projected at $389.8 million. Spread across their 1,140 employees, they spend about $341,930 apiece. Exactly what value do the taxpayers see from this?

I’m sure they don’t want to be thought of as just an ice cream store. People come in to just order a one dollar cone is not worth their time. I’ll bet the cheap price attracts customers only to find out “machine is not working” and families wind up buying more expensive items. It’s a “bait and switch” scheme.

Let the McDonald's franchisees revolt. Let McDonald's contract with other companies to design a superior machine. I see no role for the federal government in this since no one's life or health is at risk from machines that will not dispense product.

The FTC employees just want a reason for field trips. Each employee will visit a certain number of McDs to make sure the machines are working properly. Yeah, that's an efficient use of time and resources.

I've read several articles about these machines. And there is a strong appearance of fraud. Software that is made to almost always disable the machine. A contract the franchisees have to sign that they will only use the repair service of the machines manufacturer. Many franchisees are reporting that an expensive service tech comes out and the machine is broken again just a few hours after he leaves. And this happens over and over till they just quit trying to even serve that product. Some franchisees have tried to use another brand of machine but home office is forcing them not to. This whole thing stinks of fraud and I think perhaps a DA needs to investigate. The only explanation is someone is getting a kick back. But now McD's is cooking all the food ahead of time so the patty is dried out, the cheese burger is not juicy. The fries are congealed. And it's not just McD's. Fast food of all brands has been deteriorating for several years. But from my experience McD's and Burger King have deteriorated the most.

A Bronx vandal poured a liquid believed to be gasoline on an occupied NYPD van—which drove off before anything worse happened, police said Saturday. The disturbing incident happened Friday at 10:30 p.m. at Valentine Avenue and East 180th Street in Fordham, not far from the 46th Precinct station house on Ryer Avenue, where a rowdy group was already throwing eggs and trash at the vehicle, cops said. The vandal was spotted in surveillance footage holding a red gas can and pouring the mystery liquid all over the exterior and the hood of the marked NYPD van—whose driver quickly drove away, police said. The Taliban is using advanced weaponry left behind by American troops to crush the last pockets of resistance to its takeover of Afghanistan. Fighters led by the country's former vice-president were last night mounting a final defence against the new regime's forces in Panjshir Valley, the only province that the Islamist group has not captured. But the rebels appeared outgunned by Taliban fighters using US armoured vehicles, mortar missiles and high-powered artillery. Videos showed Taliban gunmen brandishing US military M4 and M16 rifles and wearing night-vision goggles.
