The last American evacuation flights left Kabul’s international airport Monday, ending the longest US war weeks shy of its 20th anniversary—but with hundreds of American citizens and thousands more Afghan allies left behind. Gen. Frank McKenzie Jr., the head of US Central Command, told reporters that the last US C-17 departed Hamid Karzai International Airport at 3:29 p.m. ET (11:59 p.m. Kabul time).(Snip)In total, McKenzie said, more than 79,000 civilians had been flown out of the Kabul airport on US military aircraft since Aug. 14–including 6,000 Americans and 73,500 Afghans and third-country citizens. The number of evacuated civilians grew

Louisiana has been hit by looting in the wake of Hurricane Ida—amid fears crime could spiral in New Orleans and other cities after energy suppliers warned that power will be out for around three weeks as utility crews work to restore more than 2,000 miles of downed energy lines across the state.
A group of men were caught by a drone camera trying to rob an ATM machine in the scorched remains of a market in the New Orleans neighborhood of St. Claude. In another incident, witnesses used their cell phone to record several people looting a store in New Orleans East. Looters often take advantage of disasters

Ted Cruz claimed Afghan refugees can call an uber to leave their holding location in the U.S. as Republican criticism of the Biden administration's vetting process ramped up ahead of the U.S. withdraw from Afghanistan.
The criticism came amid a report that an Afghan man who had been convicted of rape and had been deported from the U.S. was allowed to board an Afghan evacuation flight to America. Cruz is one several Republican lawmakers who have criticized President Joe Biden's handling of the situation in Afghanistan.(Snip)The administration is increasing its vetting process.

A US drone strike near Kabul airport has killed ten people, of which six were children, all from the same family according to relatives who survived the blast. The family members were killed when a car parked outside their home was hit by the drone strike on Sunday, which was targeting a vehicle thought to be carrying a member of ISIS-K—the Islamic State affiliate responsible for the Kabul airport terror attacks just days ago.
'Why have they killed our family? Our children? They are so burned out we cannot identify their bodies, their faces,' family member Ramin Yousufi told BBC reporters through tears.

The Education Department is investigating whether five states are violating the rights of students with disabilities by barring schools from requiring that masks be worn indoors. The move threatens the states with the possible loss of federal education funding. The department’s civil rights office said Monday it told the education departments of the five states—Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Utah—that their prohibitions are keeping schools from taking the steps they think are needed to protect students from COVID-19.(Snip)The letter marks a sharp escalation in the Biden administration’s battle with Republican-led states that say wearing masks should be a personal choice.

Former head of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Dr. Scott Gottlieb said Monday that he expects the Pfizer vaccine will be authorized for emergency use in children ages 5 to 11 by late fall or early winter this year. Gottlieb, who is also a Pfizer board member, told CNBC that data from the company’s vaccine trials for children ages 5 to 11 “should be available in September,” and then submitted to the FDA later that month. “The application probably isn’t going to be submitted until some point in October,” said Gottlieb, who was head of the FDA from 2017 to 2019 during the Trump administration.

No love here. Tennis fans were left waiting in massive lines for up to two hours Monday trying to get into the US Open—amid a mandate instituted just last week requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination. The tournament in Flushing Meadows, Queens, officially began at 11 a.m., but by close to 1:30 p.m., thousands were still waiting to show their COVID-19 vaccination cards and go through metal detectors in order to get into Arthur Ashe Stadium—with some fans missing matches because of it.(Snip)At the South Gate, around 12:30 p.m., the line of some 5,000 fans stretched about a quarter-mile, past the Unisphere.

It is the stuff of horror, heartache and helplessness: Afghan girls who have devoted their entire lives to making melodies have not only been silenced amid the Taliban takeover—they have been barred from entering the US military-run airport in Kabul. Now, the clock has run out. “We had seven buses filled with world-renowned orchestra performers—280 girls all approved to go,” said Robert Stryk, a Washington fixer who has been coordinating private evacuation efforts in conjunction with former Navy SEAL and US Congressman Scott Taylor (R-Va.). “Our hearts are broken,” he added. “These young girls spent 17 hours on a hot bus with no food or water

Rogelio Perez Gutierrez probably saw the lights of La Jolla from the boat in the minutes before he and 13 other illegal immigrants were ordered to strip off their life jackets, jump into the water and swim for it. That was as close as he would get. Many of the migrants struggled in the water. Gutierrez had it the worst.(Snip)Gutierrez is another grim statistic of this year’s unprecedented border surge—one of 61 people to die trying to sneak into the U.S. in May, and one of 383 over the last 10 months. They’ve drowned, fallen from the border wall, died of exposure, succumbed to illness

Fairfax County Public Schools will require student-athletes to be vaccinated in order to play winter and spring sports in the Virginia High School League (VHSL)—a mandate that follows similar policies around the country.
The district says athletes must show proof of vaccination if they want to participate in the following sports: basketball, gymnastics, cheerleading, indoor and outdoor track and field, swim and dive, wrestling, rifle, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis and crew. The requirement also affects other activities that require a physical, like dance or step teams.(Snip)“Vaccinating our students is a critical step in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 and minimizing any disruption to learning

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told top Pentagon leaders to prepare for a potential 'mass casualty event' 24 hours before a suicide bomb rocked the hurried U.S. evacuation at the Kabul airport, new internal DOD documents reveal. The documents, which the Pentagon condemned as a leak of classified information and urged the media not to report, detail top military officials trying to sort out security in a situation they already deemed a major risk.
(Snip)According to the report, during a separate call last Thursday, commanders spoke to a plan to close the Abbey Gate. However, U.S. forces kept it open in order despite misgivings to allow British allies

Cut the guy some slack; he wanted to boogie with the beautiful people, as one does. And of course the administration was unconcerned about the intentionally botched withdrawal; Americans are but pawns to them because they are the party of the people, dancing away maskless below the stars.
