American drivers could soon trade paying taxes on gas at the pump for owing the government annual 'per-mile user fees,' under a new pilot program recently passed by the Senate in Joe Biden's $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure deal. The bill passed a Senate vote on Tuesday and will go on to the House of Representatives. The massive deal puts $125 million toward exploring the possibility of a federal vehicle miles traveled tax (VMT) by funding the launch of federal, state and local VMT pilot programs. It gives Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg the ability to award grants to local and regional entities
Both 'parties' are on board with this, too. Billions collected earmarked as road funds are squandered nationwide, so we need to find another source of revenue to rape the peasantry with.
We are a nation taxed to death with no representation, and no peaceful means of redress. It won't make a damn bit of difference if Trump gets another term, it will be the same old, same old from congress. Trump knuckled under on these giant payouts more than once in his term, including right at the very end when he could have just as easily vetoed the last snow job from McConnell and Schumer.

How cute, they’re going to award “pilot grants” to look into the feasibility of having the unwashed pay a tax per mile driven. Guess who the grantees will be? Another government giveaway to their donors. Wait until people find out how this will affect the cost of nearly everything they buy. Unless truckers, delivery services and railroads are exempted this is going to be a disaster.

There will go no "trade" - it will end up being both.

This was reported a few times but largely ignored by the media in their push to give Democrats and Biden a win. Wait til the other goodies like mandatory breathalyzers in all cars gets out. This is what happens when they rush a bill and pass it before anyone actually reads it. Also, the CBO says this monstrosity is unaffordable.

#4 is absolutely right. If they actually go to VMT they will retain a "small" gasoline tax and crow bout how they have lowered that tax. The gasoline tax will then be incrementally increased so we frogs won't realize that we are being boiled. Governments, large and small, are insatiable in their lust for more tax dollars and will conjure up all kinds of ways to tax us to death.

Biden is pushing electric cars, in exchange the taxes from the sale of gas will down.
They have to re coop gouging the taxpayers somehow! I'd bet that they are going to tax the heck out of electricity next. They've closed coal plants, limited electricity generating plants, so we are going to have a debacle unlike anything we've ever seen. The grid will crash, we won't have power for our businesses, homes, and cars. We are screwed. All by DESIGN and brought to us by STUPID politicians.

here is the true evil in this idea. How are they going to administer it? To set up the beaurocracy to verify and track individual vehicle mileage is impractical, it would cost far more than any revenue produced, unless the tax was cripplingly high.
So whats left. If you guessed GPS Tracking chips in every vehicle on the road you are on the right track. THis is a back door to track every single vehicle in the country. How long until the DOJ, FBI and every other government alphabet agency find corrupt ways to use this tracking data to control us?

Some simple logic would dictate that all Electric vehicles go into this VMT system.
Gas/diesel vehicles would continue with the current tax on fuel per gallon.
Electric vehicles have paid NOTHING to drive down the highway to date.

All work on highway infrastructure should cease. Now. With the push to make all cars electric there just won't be that many cars left on the road. EV doesn't work. There aren't enough power plants for the electricity to charge them and the environs aren't ever going to let them be built. Charging takes too long. The EV cars are ridiculously heavy. And if it's not heavy it won't go far enough on a charge to get you to work.

The government is the enemy of we the people and the war is being waged against us by both parties. The Republicans that signed on to this monstrosity are guilty of betraying each and every American who voted for them. This huge behemoth of a bill is nothing more than generational slavery to the state. Seriously, what is our recourse? We vote and they rig the elections. Is all we are left with now the “I” word? Do you honestly believe peaceful protests will stop our slide into socialism? Our government is moving against its citizens to destroy us. They desire two classes of people, the elites in which they will, of course, fall, and the oppressed which will be the rest of us. The only people who would sign onto this bill are those who will get something from it and those who want to fundamentally transform this country. There in a nutshell you have the motivation of the Republican Party and the Democrat Party, and there is not one patriot in their midst.

The "infrastructure bill" will not fix any bridges or patch any potholes. It's a deep state power grab (filled with graft and kickbacks) that threatens our freedom and way of life. If it eventually passes, it will be another clear sign we're headed for a Marxist state.
This quote has been attributed to a different individuals, one is George Washington - "I would rather die on my feet than live on my knees."

And beware, all, that newer cars will be fitted with AI capable of tracking and reporting your driving habits. Especially if mileage driven exceeds the government quota for your vehicle. Having your engine and/or batteries locked out for several days while you earn back enough carbon credits to drive your car again will not be nice.

What else is in there in this set up for the " Green New deal " garbage? Right now there is inflation and it will get a lot worse. Gas keeps going up ( we are no longer energy independent thanks to joey & Co) which means that everything goes up in price, goods have to be trucked in. And there are shortages, empty shelves.......think back to the great toilet paper chase of 2020.The government fueled perpetual virus fears and the vilification of those that don't want the shot.Buried in that bill is the worst, the government planned destruction of the ( white ) suburbs. If your town takes government funds, it gives up control of its zoning laws which means that the federal government can put multi family and section 8 housing wherever they want to in your town. The current group ( and their friends ) in office have contempt for us , if not downright hatred. They took the oath of office to preserve , protect and defend our Constitution, but they view us, American citizens, as the enemy.

This means that Biden and the leftist and socialist Democrats, no doubt assisted by a gaggle of RINOS, will be raising taxes on a lot of Americans who earn under $400,00.00 a year who drive and own motor vehicles. Biden said repeatedly that he would not raise taxes on Americans who earn under $400,000 a year?

At the present time, we are taxed by the gallon for fuel which is very close to a a mileage tax. It has the advantage of having the heavier vehicles, that put more ware and tare on the roads pay a little more per mile because a muscle car gets lower gas mileage than a compact car. An increase in the tax on a gallon of fuel requires no infrastructure cost because the infrastructure already exists.
The infrastructure needed to tax by the mile would be huge. The complexity of turning the Interstate highway system alone into a nationwide toll road system would create monumental cost to establish and maintain just the cost for all the entry and exit toll booths would be staggering. And, not all toll road profit are guaranteed to go to road and bridge infrastructure. Government has a nasty habit of dog-robbing money for one purpose to support another. (E.g. Estimated $800 taken from Medicare to support Obamacare.)

When will people learn, any time they propose an idea, it's to create a new government department, which requires people to administer that program, buildings to rent, utilities bills to be paid, cell phones, computers, office furniture to buy.
With electric vehicles (funny how they didn't buy EV for the new post office mail trucks) becoming more prominent, they don't pay taxes for the roads, which in the eyes of bureaucrats is unsustainable to their department/agency funding source. And, it's just plain unfair, according to them.
But wait until they install autonomous vehicles, which will then be able to dictate who can go where, and when, since you'll have to pay for the privilege of driving on those roads you paid for.

Isn't it AMAZING that all of these hair-brained socialist lib schemes end up HIDDEN AWAY???
There is nowayinhell that these things are read by those who vote on them--thousands and thousands of pages--
If it weren't for those who actually read them, we wouldn't know--- they know their time is up, so they are working as fast as they can to PERMANENTLY screw people over in states like Texas where you don't gauge how many miles it takes to get somewhere, but calculate it in how many HOURS it takes
How many crazy things that ARE NOT infrastructure are in it????

Just another part of the war on the 'Kulaks'. Suburban dwellers who drive to work in the city, usually own their own homes. Rural dwellers who usually own their own homes have to drive a long way to do anything.
Another way to force people into apartments in the city, walking distance to their assigned jobs.

Fight back!
What will happen is they will say there is no longer a Federal tax on gasoline ... so the states and cities will make up for it by raising theirs. And who will pay the most for a mileage tax? Yup ... the middle class commuter, those with vacation homes, those who travel to visit grandma, etc. The inner city rabble? They never leave their slums don't ya see?
