Something city people notice when they move to a small town is the almost palpable trust local folks display toward each other. Walk up to a stranger in a large city and they pull back, wary of your purpose. Trust used to be the national default position, too. [Snip] But in so many disappointing ways, all that has changed drastically. It’s seriously corroding our national character. And it’s profoundly affecting the way we live, work, vote, entertain, talk to each other. Or, rather, talk at each other now

That feeling and that implicit social contract still can be found in many small towns in Deep East Texas. Just pop your hood in the HEB parking lot and within a few minutes you'll be offered jumper cables, oil, cold water and unsolicited advice. Why hell's bells, son.....there's yur trouble.

In 1987, I took a trip from South Carolina to Vermont, traveling by train. I had a stopover in Grand Central Station, New York City. I stopped at a refreshment stand to buy a bagel and a Coke. I'll never forget the fact that the woman who served me NEVER made eye contact. Having grown up in West Virginia--and living in South Carolina-- everyone talked to one another. So this encounter in NYC stood out like a sore thumb. I live in West Virginia now. Most people still talk to each other. And I visited South Carolina recently. And most people there still talk to each other. And now look at the devastation in NYC. Is it becoming like North Korea, where people avoid eye contact out of fear and mistrust?

My lack of “trust” in any of these sleezoid politicians anywhere has been for much longer than Xiden, and is bipartisan for sure. The question is when they are taken to task for their crimes and collusion.

People are still friendly and helpful in our small town, pop 5,000. Although we live out in the forest, its still "our town". Mask wearing seems to be on the decline and everyone is smiling and running into old friends. I saw a group of five women on the sidewalk in animated conversation, standing in a close circle without one mask. It was a wonderful sight! This week we're going down to Simi Valley in So. Cal. It will be interesting to see the behavior in a densely populated area.

#2, with all the mentally ill violent people wandering NYC, it's risky to make eye contact--they might claim you "dissed" them with your look or expression, after which they'll scream at you or blind-side punch you, followed by kicks to the head. Better to leave well enough alone and go about your business.

When I began in journalism, these hot, muggy days of mid-summer were considered a dead time for news. No social media. No “View.” No Donald Trump. It was so long ago that Joe Biden wasn’t even in the Senate and he didn’t have his amazingly white caps. [Snip] Spare summer time, even in the evening, was spent in, on, or near water – swimming, water-skiing, or thinking about it. Everyone did that. So, I was rather surprised this weekend to come upon a research discussion by the smart folks over at Gallup Inc. that shook up my aged assumptions about summer activities

Joe Biden came through again for Vladimir Putin, erasing years of bipartisan U.S. objections to his dream natural gas pipeline to Europe beneath the Baltic Sea. And it cost the Russian leaders nothing. Last spring, as part of his suck-up to the Russian president, Biden lifted sanctions on Nord Stream 2 builders and executives, again without any economic or diplomatic reciprocity. Putin is a sly one. And Biden is big on freebies. All this after Biden kills the Keystone XL pipeline to support Americans’ energy needs. The huge Nord Stream 2 pipeline, now

Joe Biden reaches the six-month mark of his presidency in a few days. It just seems much longer. So, how’s the old guy doing barely one-eighth of the way through a 1,461-day term? Coming after the tumultuous 1,461-day term that preceded this, Biden would like things to slow down considerably. Perhaps even be boring. Anything to get through these grimace-causing public appearances of his, where he gets lost while reading his written text or simply goes silent for 25 seconds of mental rebooting. Biden or someone acting on his behalf decided he will not

There seems to be a stubborn sector of our officialdom desperately seeking to prolong our latent fear of that virus from you-know-where and extend government’s Covid controls. The latest is that evil D.V. (Delta Variant). Well, good news. Perhaps you’ve noticed at the convenience store, in the post office, the break room. That pathetic effort of restoring government controls is failing. Crumbling might be a better word for it. Joe Biden is quietly implementing a drastic, dangerous, and many would argue naïve change in foreign policy toward recalcitrant states such as Iran and Russia. As part of a new approach to sanctions, built more around time-consuming collaboration and consultation with allies, Biden is already easing some existing strictures with no matching quid pro quos. Some Iranians have already been removed from Treasury sanction lists with no new commitments to negotiate. Relieving those sanctions unilaterally is intended by the Democrat president as a sign of goodwill and allied collaboration. Biden clearly hopes that will lead to a

Joe Biden was attempting to show how on the ball he is this week at a briefing on the nation’s wildfire situation. It didn’t work. It was an iconic moment, George W. Bush at his authentic best talking to rescue workers and a shocked America from atop a heap of 9/11 rubble. Just three days after those awful sights of collapse and death the president stood there, arm around a firefighter, bullhorn in hand. Someone yelled, “Can’t hear you.” “I hear you!” said the commander-in-chief, “The rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.” Loud cheers ensued at the site and far beyond. The cheering has long since died, replaced by

The University of Wisconsin removed a controversial boulder from its Madison campus Friday after the Black Student Union and other activists objected to its description nearly 100 years ago with a racial slur. Chamberlin Rock, which rests atop Observatory Hill, is named after a 19th Century geologist and former university president, Thomas Crowder Chamberlin, whose work centered on glacial deposits, according to a bio on the university’s website. But it was a reporter’s reference to the rock in a nearly century-old Wisconsin State Journal article that prompted the push for its removal. In October 1925, the university had the boulder excavated and placed prominently atop the hill to honor Chamberlin,

Dr. Rochelle Walensky has been making the media rounds. During her most recent appearance on CNN, The Conservative Treehouse caught her making a startling admission: The vaccines neither prevent people from catching COVID nor from spreading COVID. At most, they simply reduce the severity of the symptoms people experience if they do catch COVID. From this statement, Sundance draws the logical conclusion: Why should people get vaccine passports if they are both as contagious and as vulnerable to contagion as their unvaccinated cohorts?
