Thousands of Spirit Airlines passengers have been stranded in airports for hours after the budget carrier canceled 30 percent of its scheduled flights nationwide. On Monday, the Florida-based airline canceled over 200 flights throughout the US, in addition to 165 canceled flights on Sunday, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.com. Travelers took to social media to share vent their frustrations from airports in cities such as San Juan, Miami, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale while they waited for updates from the airline. Photos and videos showed the travelers seated on the ground as they complained of being hot and hungry in packed terminals.
So how is this any different than any other day of flying post 9/11? Driving may take a little longer, but at least you control your own pace more or less.

FTA: blamed on weather and 'other operational challenges?
Huh? There is no unusual or wide spread severe weather other than the summer thunderstorms.
operational challengers??? I'll bet they can't get the gas.

The airlines are brutally abusive these days, with no remorse whatsoever. They lie through their teeth, as they tell you it’s their way or the highway, and then, at the end of the day, it’s your fault that there are problems. Frankly, I’m surprised there hasn’t been more of a passenger uprising. I decided, after my own “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” experience trying to get home from Nantucket this spring, that I was done. Hubby and I just bought an RV and we are taking back our travel autonomy. The airlines have made their beds; they can lay in them.

I'd think twice about getting on any of those flights, if they ever start boarding. Go to the car rental.

Spirit has 200 flights a day? Who knew?
Got canceled with them coming out of Orlando a few years back when someone's cell phone battery cooked off in the security line and forced the terminal to evacuate. Took 2 days for them to catch up with the backlog. Not the same flexibility as Delta or the other majors. Never again.

No sympathy whatsoever for this or any other airline. They caused it, now they can live with it.

Last I checked the air conditioning works in the airport and although expensive there is plenty of food.

All the snafus are not generating much discussion on the FlyerTalk site. I guess most seasoned travelers avoid Spirit at all costs.

AMR FAT to DFW yesterday rerouted to PHX because FAT does not have enough jet fuel. VDH mentioned that same issue in his column today - talking about 3rd World issues now occurring in the US…

Another reason to not fly...in addition to missing out on the 'TSA grope'...if I can't drive there I don't go...

The young and dumb going on vacations with their free government money are taxing the system. One of the operational challenges are airlines running out of fuel due to a shortage of fuel truck drivers because potential drivers would rather sit home and enjoy their free government money. Quite a vicious circle Dementia Joe has created.

It's tough right now in the airline business. Spirit isn't the only carrier struggling today. Domestic travel is currently off the charts, but, the airlines have not been able to staff up back to pre-pandemic staffing levels. Too many workers find it cheaper to draw their unemployment checks than to work. Thanks to you, biden you cheater and yes, you too, Fauci, you little worm.
My older son is a pilot for a major carrier and says that staffing levels are also tight at all levels in his company - checkin/ticketing people, baggage and ramp services, flight attendants, and pilots are being stretched to the limit. All of the carriers are in the same boat. It is going to be a while yet before the staffing issues are resolved. And when they are resolved, guess what - biden the cheater announces another lockdown?

Another problem the airlines face is that most of the people applying for the support services jobs fail their drug tests. These same people spent the last year drawing their unemployment and stimulus checks then throw it away on meth, crack, various opioids, and marijuana. In the case of Spirit Airlines, they rely on third-party contractors to provide the required support personnel. The other carriers are doing the same, And pay rates are slightly above minimum wage at best.

Before I retired, I flew extensively to meet with customers. Late planes, lost luggage, TSA goons, cattle care seating. I hope never to enter an airport again.
