Police chief: Many shoplifters need
help, not fines or jail Opinion

Retailers, malls and supermarkets across New Jersey are seeing dramatic surges in shoplifting over the past 18 months. It’s believed to be fallout from the pandemic-related economic downturn that has caused workplace cutbacks and joblessness. This is a separate type of crime from highly-publicized organized retail theft rings. More people are resorting to shoplifting as a way to make ends meet. That’s no excuse; just a sad reality. It also ties up valuable law enforcement resources. Significant time and taxpayer money is expended to track down, arrest and prosecute shoplifting offenders. It’s time for New Jersey to take the lead

Comments:

Where is the evidence that people shoplift to make ends meet? I see designer purses, drugs, electronics, and clothing being swiped. No one is stealing a can of tuna fish and Ramen noodles just for a meal.

I remember decades ago when people were really poor. Everyone was really poor. Yet I remember people having integrity and theft was rare. People today have gotten away from caring for others and only care for themselves and what they want for the moment.

What half-baked drivel, and this from a "Police Chief" spouting every woke talking point without the slightest concern for the victims of these crimes. Oh, by the way, nice staged photo of a "white" shoplifter. There are plenty of actual photos of shoplifters, the vast majority of whom are entitled blacks.

Obviously, this police chief has never run a profitable business. Some people steal for the thrill. For some, the goal is to sell the stuff to someone with a flea market stand. I work for a big box retail store. No more Nike merchandise. Too much of it was being stolen. The leather chair gods decided the shoe dept should be self-serve (rather than an employee getting the desired shoes from the stock room). All the shoes are on nice shelves. It's so easy for customers to put their old shoes in the box and wear out a pair of new shoes.

What happened to food stamps ond food banks if you or your children are hungry. And aren't the kids fed breakfast, lunch and dinner at school? If poor people are shoplifting everything they need, can we do away with the monthly welfare check? Save a few billion a year. Right?

EVERY store I have seen for the last month has Help Wanted signs posted, waiving background checks, sign on bonuses, cash paid daily for new hires that need it....I wanted to skip cooking tonight went to grab some fast food, drove by all three locations near here where fast food places are grouped, ONLY a Taco Bell was open, and it was at the third location."Not enough employees"

I am appalled that this voice, this opinion is coming from a POLICE CHIEF! John, go into social work, perhaps be a mentor or a councilor or get that degree in whatever psych field suits your fancy. But get as far away from further influencing and degrading what ragged force of cops are left on the streets of your unfortunate town. And while you are looking at things through a different perspective, maybe - just maybe - you will see the far reaching damage that extends to the GOOD people, the hard workers, the hard-pressed business OWNERS, the ones who DO play by the rules, who obey the laws - WHO PAY YOUR FREAKIN' SALARY - see and hear how THEY - WE - people like ME feel when we hear the sniveling, weak-arse excuse making coming from someone who can't fight actual wrong , crime and yes, BAD PEOPLE when they do harm to others. Food assistance was increased and the people who show up really don't need food. They don't need to steal food. How many are overweight and look like water buffaloes ?
