At the British Open golf championship last month, Collin Morikawa cantered to victory and became the first player in the event’s 161-year history to take home more than $2 million in prize money. I think it would be a very difficult job. The good pay they mention can be very sporadic. Lugging the clubs around on hot, humid days would not be any fun - even at a high-profile tournament. But I guess being part of a professional tournament is a huge bonus for some golf enthusiasts.

There once was a rule at the Masters Tournament that only Black men were allowed to be caddies and to participate in golf''s most prestigious show. Money and pride went with the job and the public agreed that the set-up was cool. There are now no Black caddies at the Masters and Black people are almost invisible at the event. I wish that was not so.

Besides the obvious carrying the bag, are not caddies somewhat like a coach, letting the player focus on the game? I suspect the good caddies make suggestions as to what club, how to play the hole etc? If they make the little difference between winning and 2nd place they deserve part of the prize.

Dad started to caddy at the local country club when he was sixteen, in 1934 Detroit. He lugged bags on his back because the club didn't even allow the little wheeled hand carts. He'd get a dollar. Skip was an avid player his entire life. He was a founding member of the LAPD Golf Association and played in every tournament, up to six months before he passed. He worked graveyard so he could play golf during the day.

I am old enough to remember what #5 posted. Those black Masters caddies were legendary. I can still see "Iron Man" Avery carrying Arnold's bag up the hill on #18. I can see why the tour pros would want their own man on their bag but those caddies were a big part of the Masters' charm. I also read where's Tiger's caddie, Steve Williams made millions by the time Tiger fired him and even started a charity in New Zealand.

The pros I've seen only hire a caddy if they're touring and only use them practicing when the cart barn is empty. Those bags weigh enough to make a pack mule's knees buckle. A good caddy has complete knowledge of your capabilities and game strategy to put a pro in the best position to win enough money to make it worthwhile to show back home to the wife and kids.

Caddies today do a lot more than just carry the bag. Prior to the event they measure the course and checkout the greens and compare them to the green reading books. Sometimes they have to be a psychologist, friend, babysitter, and bail bondsman. And many of them are very good golfers with real insight. Some touring Pros want lots of data like Bryson Dechambeau. Wind speed, humidity, even something called green density. Which is also one of the reasons he's such a slow player. I think a lot of these caddies are worth every penny.

Chicago — Secretary of State Jesse White announced Wednesday that driver services facilities, Secretary of State offices and the Illinois State Capitol building will require all employees and customers to wear a mask beginning Aug. 2. The reinstatement of the mask requirement comes a day after the CDC reversed course on some masking guidelines, recommending that even vaccinated people return to wearing masks indoors in parts of the U.S. where COVID-19 is surging. White says the mandate will allow the facilities to remain open to serve the public to reduce the heavy customer volume caused by the COVID-19 pandemic over the last year.
