Thanks to a reworked menu and long hours, Jeannie Kim managed to keep her San Francisco restaurant alive during the coronavirus pandemic. That makes it all the more frustrating that she fears her breakfast-focused diner could be ruined within months by new rules that could make one of her top menu items — bacon — hard to get in California. “Our number one seller is bacon, eggs and hash browns,” said Kim, who for 15 years has run SAMS American Eatery on the city’s busy Market Street. “It could be devastating for us.” At the beginning of next year, California

Wow, reason #86,247,296 that I am so happy that I do not live in the Soviet Socialist Republik of Cuba-fornia!!! And this is one time that you can't even blame their Communist state government. It sounds like it was "approved overwhelmingly by voters in 2018" (though, given this is AP, that could mean that it was approved by 50.00001% of the voters -- they do tend to put their lie-beral "spin" on everything they write).
Hey, maybe that will free up a lot more bacon and pork products to go to markets in other states. Cheaper bacon for us!!! I'll take it!!!

Essential businesses (and people) vs. non-essential businesses (and people). Welcome to the non-essential list. Guess what happens to the non-essential in the long run? Ever see the movie "Red Dawn"?

Look - no one want farm animals (our food) treated inhumanely and the idea of the creature being able to turn around and stretch it's limbs during it's short but purposeful life is not a bad idea. But leave it to policymakers to take that good idea and completely fubar it with vagaries, complications and mostly unwritten guidance on how to comply. Except for regulations that will ensure the most expensive and overreaching paths to solutions will be required

Sorry not buying the benefit to the animal, which is used as an excuse to get rid of a very dirty business that pollutes the waterways and requires a lot of inputs.
Same with dairy farms, the cows f>rt too much, causing greenhouse gas, and it's another dirty farm practice, which requires lots of hay. Much of the hay is grown in the Imperial Valley who has master water rights.
It's why California likes those grape growers and vineyards, who are just rich farmers, after all.

To the voters in Kalifornia, all I can say is, "More bacon for me, but not for thee!" Wasn't sure what I wanted for a lite supper, because of the heat, but a couple of BLT's with home grown tomatoes just made the menu.

No shortage of hogs in Mexico. I have visited some very large hog farms. They are clean and very well-managed. I’ll just drive across and come back with bacon for my morning breakfast.

Perhaps the very best bacon in the country comes from (what used to be) a little smokehouse in Bishop,Calif. that smokes meats with Mountain Mahogany. The CA Govt "Powers that Be" stopped them from exporting it out of state...for a while I had them ship to a friend there that then re-labled it and sent it on to me. That became a felony...sooo...SCREW THEM. It's only 15% of the market, Let them eat Soybacon.
"farmer Dwight Mogler estimates the changes would cost him $3 million and allow room for 250 pigs in a space that now holds 300.
"To afford the expense, Mogler said, he’d need to earn an extra $20 per pig and so far, processors are offering far less."
Keep in mind there are only 4 Pork Processors left in the entire country, they collude and buy ONLY certain sizes, weights, ages and many do not even "Buy" anymore, they provide piglets of a certain size and age, pick them up at a certain other size and age, while providing all of the feed, farmer only gets paid to feed/water/clean up after them. If the farmer balks about the wages? They cancel the contract, farmer goes broke, they buy the farm at tax sale, send in a team of (often immigrant) employees and own the whole show. Smithfeild has been sold to China, Tyson might as well have been. Walmart(nations largest pork purchaser) is stopping their "Buying" and opening farms to provide all of their own, Kroger(#2) is thinking of doing the same.

Texas/Fla/and other states ought to round up several hundred feral pigs and release them in Calif Big City parks...there would be millions within a year or three. Wild hogs might finally get the Golden Gate Park feral cat "crises" under control.

While I appreciate that Texas goes somewhat against the leftist line, as a lifelong Californian I would never ever consider moving to Texas. Life is still too good in the Golden State to tempt me to depart. Farm animals should have pleasant lives before slaughter. There will be no shortage of bacon.

Unfortunately, this is not new. Some years ago the bureaucrats in Brussels (European Union) decreed that pigs must have a certain amount of square feet per pig and even went so far as to mandate toys for them.

Gavin is going to be recalled. Larry Elder will replace him in a landslide. Things are going to turn around. This crap will not survive. We love our bacon wrapped hot dogs grilled on the street smothered in peppers and onions cooked in the bacon grease and mustard on top.

'sows are kept in open-air crates measuring 14-square-feet when they join a herd and then for a week as part of the insemination process before moving to larger, roughly 20-square foot group pens with other hogs. '
