Joe Biden has nominated three of the wives of his political allies to plum diplomatic posts - putting his own spin on the tradition of giving the coveted positions to major donors. The ambassadors to Austria, Slovenia and the U.N.'s world food program are all wives of supporters.Biden is also reportedly considering Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of John F. Kennedy, for an ambassadorial role in Asia or Australia. She was ambassador to Japan during the Obama administration. Cindy McCain, for the U.N. role, was considered an essential candidate for an ambassador posting in the Biden administration,

Because sending the wives of donors, not even the donors themselves, as ambassadors to various places tells the world Joe takes diplomacy seriously and the adults are back in charge. For sure these wives of donors will enhance our standing in the world. If I was a major ally such as Japan I would look forward to some bimbo as ambassador and not at all feel insulted by such a demeaning diplomatic error.

Did Caroline Kennedy actually move to Japan when she was ambassador there or did she just jet over a few times a year to attend ceremonial functions? I would think the career diplomats do all the work and the ambassadors attend to ceremonial functions and attend cocktail parties.

This cannot be allowed. They are all married women of no color---well-healed with deep pockets. No lesbians, no transies, no Muslims. Not a single person of color. Nobody down and out, who just needs to be given a chance to turn their life around. Wow. When it really matters, Joe's actions show him as the quid-pro-quo elitist he really is. Not a single person of color out there who could be an ambassador, Joe? C'mon, man... Jan Psaki will be doing a ton of circling back on this.

Recently, I read a rumor that Pelosi was thinking of retiring early as speaker and was seeking to be appointed ambassador of either the Vatican or Italy. There's a congresswomen in the House she's grooming to replace her. I hope she does this and gets out of Washington. The 2020 election audits may unseat both her and Schumer from the leadership positions.

The ambassador position is always political and nothing else. Actually, the one running the day to day operations of the embassy is the Ministry Chief of Mission which is always a career diplomat. So, no surprise that the political hacks have the job. Generally, they are an embarrassment.

Having served at a couple of our embassies, #22, I know that the actual title is Deputy Chief of Mission. I don’t think the US has ever had a minister or ministry of anything. But you’re correct about that position being held by a career diplomat. Yes, Republicans do it too. The really big donors get posts like the Court of St. James (London). If Pelosi were assigned to the Vatican she would, no doubt, turn into a pillar of salt or would spontaneously combust. God will not be mocked.
