The American Academy of Pediatrics updated its guidance for the upcoming school year on Monday, now recommending that anyone above the age of 2 wear masks inside schools to protect against the spread of the coronavirus, "regardless of vaccination status."
The decision comes as COVID-19 cases are climbing across the U.S. due to the highly transmissible Delta variant.(Snip)"Combining layers of protection that include vaccinations, masking and clean hands hygiene will make in-person learning safe and possible for everyone," she added.
The AAP says its new guidance regarding wearing masks in schools applies to students, teachers and staff.

The NFL reportedly plans on ramping up social justice messaging during the upcoming season.
According to Front Office Sports, the league “will introduce more social justice messaging on fields and player helmets during the upcoming 2021 season, following up on initial efforts from 2020.” FOS reported that the NFL “will promote social justice via on-field signage, decals on player helmets, and in-stadium PSAs.” That’s right, folks! If you thought social justice messages were going away, well, you’d be wrong! Furthermore, the NFL plans on playing “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which some view as the black national anthem

For the first time in Chicago, some 911 calls for mental health emergencies won’t be answered by police officers but by mental health professionals paired with paramedics.
In one pilot program starting this fall, a paramedic will be dispatched with a mental health clinician for “behavioral health calls.” In another, a paramedic will work with a “recovery specialist” on calls involving substance abuse.
Mental health clinicians will be on hand at the 911 center to monitor situations (Snip) Before the pilots begin, however, the city will staff two ambulances each with a police officer trained in crisis intervention, a paramedic and a mental health clinician.

Hospitals across the country have been flooded with babies with a potentially-deadly respiratory virus. Wellington has recorded 46 children hospitalised with respiratory illnesses including respiratory syncytial virus - also known as RSV. RSV is a common respiratory illness and in adults only produces very mild symptoms but for young children, it can make them extremely ill or even be fatal.
Doctors have warned New Zealand's outbreak is likely due to children not developing immunity to other viruses suppressed by Covid lockdowns.
Epidemiologist and public health professor Michael Baker said: "What we're seeing now is we've accumulated a whole lot of susceptible children that have missed out on exposure

President Biden was met at O’Hare International Airport Wednesday by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot following a deadly Independence Day weekend in the Windy City.
The president was greeted by Lightfoot and Illinois’ Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker as he arrived in Chicago but he didn’t focus much time on the more than 100 shootings over the holiday as it was just a quick stop for him en route to suburban McHenry County for an event touting his Build Back Better initiative. According to White House press secretary Jen Psaki, Biden reiterated his commitment to working with Lightfoot and city leaders to counter gun violence

Evanston, IL - A middle school drama teacher is suing Evanston/Skokie School District 65 in federal court for alleged discrimination.
Stacy Deemar, who is white, filed the lawsuit (Snip) "When you have a picture of a white person dressed as a devil, telling the students that whiteness is a bad deal, and telling students that they need to sign away their whiteness, or in the classroom, saying an anti-racist pledge and putting it up on the board to look at every single day, you are telling students that they are either oppressed or the oppressor solely because of their skin color," Herman said.

They’re in hot H2O.
Scientific American found itself taking heat this month after the scholarly, 176-year-old magazine published an opinion piece titled “Health Care Workers Call for Support of Palestinians.”
The screechy diatribe accused Israel of “vaccine apartheid” and “war crimes” among other alleged abuses.(Snip)Among the biggest sticking points were the article’s failure to note that the 1993 Oslo Accords tasks the Palestinian Authority to provide healthcare services to its people. The same agreement also prohibits Israel from providing care unless asked by the Palestinian Authority.
